@eschatology_matters, I read the intro to The Failure of the American Baptist Culture after your recommendation, and I was a little disappointed. He seemed to be arguing against a hyper individualistic Baptist tradition as a straw man and then applied that same critique to all Baptists, insisting there could not be anything like a Reformed Baptist. That is a pretty bad argument. And to insist our culture is how it is because of that Baptist culture is a little silly when you consider that the most Baptist areas in the world are the best preserved Christian cultures in the world. The more Reformed, Anglican, and Roman Catholic cultures throughout the West are much further gone than the heavily Baptist American south and the more rural Baptist areas throughout the Midwest. I take the critique as a good correcting to excessive individualism in some circles, but I really think the takes it too far and is far too absolutist in his thinking.

I disagree with his timing of the 2nd resurrection. It occurs after Gog/Magog. He juat got through grilling post/a-mill on the timeline. I am also historic pre-mill. But I believe the battle of Armageddon doesn't destroy every non-believer. I have thought about who the survivors are. Perhaps children under the age of accountability are spared and not held accountable for taking the mark of the beast. Perhaps human trafficking victims are spared. Perhaps there are non-believers that are off grid and have not received the mark, but also have not heard the gospel. I also see that we reign and rule over the nations. Who are the nations? Those who still have carnal bodies. I also believe many of them will get saved during the millennium. I see no indication in scripture that people can not repent after the great tribulation and the 2nd coming of Christ.

As an Historic Pre-Mill person myself, I do respect all the views as I attrmpt to understand how they get there. But I have to admit, it is irritating when debating post/a-mill and they call all pre-mill people dispensationalists. I have to tell them over and over, I am not a dispensationalist.

OK. Had to stop at the outset. He's a great speaker, engaging and funny... however, inaccurate he may be. He made a number of demonstrably false statements in the beginning. For instance, he claimed that for the first 300 yrs the church was "almost universally" premill. This is false and has been demonstrated time and again. For instance, I'd point to Dr. Hill's doctoral dissertation as evidence. Simply that we may assume this is what was taught by the disciples, is fine. Except that assumes we believe that Jesus taught them this. Read the Gospels. He actually didn't, and if He did, it's not recorded. In fact, if you read what He did say, when the disciples asked about the Kingdom (while they assumed premill because of their cultural context), He never actually affirmed their understanding, did He? No He didn't. They assumed the Kingdom would appear suddenly. How did Jesus respond? How did Daniel see it? How does Jesus' mustard tree resemble Nebuchadnezzar's tree? And are the differences between those two kings? Moreover, "Chiliasm" (or "premillennialism") was developed, roughly, 100 yrs or so before Jesus was born. And although not all teachers agreed with it, it became the dominant view. Now, what was going on in Jewish culture at that time, and do you think that would have lead to such a teaching? Lastly, among the teachers who actually did accept Chiliasm, they couldn't agree on what a "Millennium" was. Opinions varied between 70 years to 7,000 years. There's much more, but if you're new to this, what I have written may be a lot.

Not good explanation

Our death is always immanent. Do we need to believe we are in the last days to feel urgency about appearing before the judgment seat of Christ? I do not believe the Lord will return soon. I believe that Isaiah speaks of a time when a sinner will die at a hundred and the days of a man’s life will be as the days of a tree. This has to be before the last enemy is destroyed because there is still death in that scenario. This clearly didn’t happen yet.

This was great! I like to refer to Anabaptist Two-Kingdom theology as "A2K" as opposed to R2K. I was Conservative Mennonite until two years ago. If Matt comes to Moscow again, I'd love to chat with him!

When John MacArthur said we lose down here, If you actually listen to the whole sermon he gave In context, he was saying, our victory isn't in this fallen world that God is going to one day melt with fervent heat, ( ill let someone else look up the scripture on this dictrine), but that the church is not going to Christianize the world and then Jesus returns. Thats theonomy/ post millenial nonsense. Our victory, our ultimte WIN is when Jesus returns and sets up His kingdom on earth. Which IS biblical. When you don't read the bible with a consistent literal grammatical hermeneutic, you get all kinds of esoteric nonsense, that no one can agree on.

Read Romans 11 substituting "The Church" for every time Israel or a pronoun antecedent referring to Israel occurs. It will change your theology. Let the Bible speak.

I enjoyed the comment that Darby and Scofield would not recognize it if they were called dispensationalists. This brings to mind that there perhaps are other aspects to this conflict which I see as between those who believe in the Rapture and salvation by grace alone, and the Reformed faction. As the Reformed groups have risen they have chased from the semnaries and many pulpits those who preached the Pre-Trib Rapture. I see this as a conflict between literal grammatical-historical interpretation and allegorization that is increasingly coming in to vogue. Give an ear to N. T Wright and you will hear allegorical interpretation in his explanation of the Rapture. I want to challenge all Reformed believers, especially those who oppose what they now call Christian Zionists. Read Romans 11 aloud while substituting the phrase "The Church" everywhere you see the word Israel or a pronoun referring back to Israel. If you do it thoughtfully, you will have to adjust your theology. Let God be true and every man a liar!
