Is Luis Suárez a Liverpool Legend? [How GOOD was He Actually?]

  • Luis Suárez is undoubtedly one of the most controversial figures in modern football history. However, his sheer ability has arguably managed to erase his more divisive tendencies.
He spent some of his best years in the red side of Liverpool, but there's something that I've wondered for some time now; did he do enough to be considered a Liverpool legend?

Liverpool fan here. I believe he's the best natural finisher we've had since Fowler. Imo better than Torres at his best, and Salah. I also think he's the most unpredictable player we've ever had (for better or worse); the outrageous things he would attempt, and pull off, would leave people not believing their eyes. He had the dribbling of Salah, finishing of Fowler, long shots and dogged determination of Gerrard, creativity of Torres, audacity of Coutinho, and morals of an Albanian pimp. What's not to love?

Dude, Suarez never had issues outside of the pitch, he is a family man. How people can crucify him for stupid heat of the moments actions during a football game but give a pass to guys like Benzema that crashes cars and has relationships with underage women. Society cares more about what you look like than what you actually are, quite sad.

The most remarkable thing about Suarez was, for me, his way of dribbling INTO an opponent.
He’d actually run the ball at them and get the ricochets off of their legs on his way past.
I’d never seen anything like it. The first couple of times he did it, I thought he’d miss controlled the ball and got lucky, but after watching him regularly I realised he did it often and on purpose. It really was extraordinary.
I’ve never seen another player do it, I’m sure their are players that have done it, and maybe it’s more common in South America, but I’ve never seen it before.

    • @BurnRoddy
      @BurnRoddy Před rokem +29

Yup, Pele did it even better but it was popularized by the River Plate Machine of the 1940s, if you have some time check out their story. Best South American team of all time. South American football has always been more individualistic and cheeky than European football. Also I recomend images of Argentine Omar Sivori a guy who played for Juventus back in the day, he used to play with his shoelaces untied and without shinguards just to show how good he was and that was back in 60s before yellow/red cards were invented.

Suarez run against United for Kuyt's goal in 06/03/2011, the same can be said about his 01/02/2017 goal against Atletico or his 17/03/2019 goal against Betis which couldn't be replicated by any of the top10 strikers in the world during his prime are proof of this.
And its not just his numbers but his technique and his drive to win only matched by Ibra.
And his goal+assists per game record before his injury in 2014 was superb considering he was drive force in all of his teams up to that point.
His achievements consist of being the youngest foreign captain of Ajax at the time he earned the Captain's armbrand, being part of the selected few who scored more than 100 goals for Ajax alongside Cruijff and other legends, scored 6 goals in a single game, scored 30 hattricks in his career, scored 4 goals in a single qualifier game against Chile, Club World Cup top scorer of all time - in only two games - in 2015, top scorer of every Europan league he played so far (including 2 golden shoes eith two different teams), came out of the bench after a 29 day rest from knee suegery to beat a European elite team at a World Cup, a 4th and a 5th player at the World Cup, 1 Copa America title (and mvp) and 1 Champions League title (scoring the winning gosl in the final), 1 UEFA Supercup, the infamous triplete of Luis Enrrique, managed to lift mid table Liverpool 2 games short of winning the league, won a League Cup and 4 Copa del Rey, 1 Eredivisie and 5 La Ligas. He's been losing form since the second half of 2017 and to this day he has 512 goals and 242 assists in 814 games, a 0.95 goals plus assists per game ratio.
To me he is amongst the top5 strikers of the last 50 years.

He was the most talented player I have ever seen play for Liverpool ,and I saw Kenny (although I missed Kenny's prime)
There are 3 players I have seen in the prem that have destroyed an opposing teams body language simply by picking up the ball in a breaking attack situation, pretty much every time they do, because the opposing team are that scared. Thiery Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, ......and Luis Suarez. Even Aguero, as good as he is, and as lethal as he is,does not quite have that effect (although I will say Aguero is probably the best finisher English football has seen).
Suarez was a playmaker, goal scorer, dribbler, passer, set piece taker and out shone even the like of Gerrard and IMO was even better than prime Torres.
Shame he's a bit of a c*nt, but as an LFC fan I can't help but love him, some of the goals this guy scored were just obscene
Legend? yes purely on his ability, are Gerrard or Kenny bigger legends because of their connections to the club , ability and what they achieved? yes for sure.

He suffered for his handball against Ghana as he never achieved greatness at anfield by winning the league or champions league that the true legends of Liverpool have. As someone who has no recollection of those players, my era would probably consider him a legend, but won't be remembered in the same way as a Gerrard or a carragher. The guy became so good that every time he got the ball, you somehow knew he was gonna create a chance - and also score that chance himself. People talk about Messi. Ronaldo. But none of them could have dominated the PL as much as Suarez did with that Liverpool team. The fact that he also managed to score 50+ goals for Barca after his transfer really helped me make the following conclusion: his season for Liverpool was perhaps the greatest individual performance by a player over an entire season in a league division ever. Even surpassing the performances in La Liga of Ronaldo and Messi in their primes.

I’d say no because Suarez is a football legend. When he played for us, he made our team look like title challengers when in reality, Dwight Gayle would hand us our own arses. The reasoning behind him not being a Liverpool legend is this - Could he have done what he did at another place? Was there anything specific about that club that affected their ability or not? For Suarez, he definitely could’ve done what he did at any other club. He probably could’ve gone to Sunderland and had them battling for 1st. And he very easily chose to leave for Barcelona, because it’s where he wanted to be. Whereas someone like Gerrard owes a lot to Liverpool FC. It’s the club that took a chance on him and set him up with those who’d motivate him to take his ability to the next level. He loved playing for Liverpool more than any club. And the kicker - He never played better or even at the same level for any other side than he did for Liverpool whereas Suarez somehow improved at Barca and became, for a time, the greatest player on the planet. That is why Gerrard is a Liverpool legend and coincidentally Suarez is not a Liverpool legend, but a football legend instead.

So... England has a huge problem with racism but... because what England did before a long time ago and that still pursues their minds, that's why they are so sensitive about this issue, Edison Cavanni had a similar problem, here in Uruguay we use a term not to describe or be racist to the skin color of a person, I'm a white guy and my auntie, my mom, my sisters they always called me "negrito" it's a term we use in the most tender way to someone we appreciate a lot or someone else who we don't have anything against, an example will be "hola negrito cómo estás?" that is how my uncle used to greet me everytime I visit him, Suárez said to Evra "negrito no te enojes" and England made the rest... if England did wrong in the past with the racism is their problem, we are not racists in Uruguay that's why we can use a word like that to someone who we care about or we like / love / care, etc knowing there is not a bad intention behind and without any kind of racism, but oh well I guess that story will always pursue England and they need someone to play the bad guy, so they can say "we are vindictive and we don't tolerate racism" yeah sure... back track some years folks... England is still ashame of how racists they used to be... How can he be racist when he played in our national team with a lot of black skin players, we don't care about skin colors, we love people for what they are, if they are good people we don't care about anything else, color, sex, way of thinking, nothing, but England is traumatized by their own faults in the past, just saying.

They hadn't been contenders for years even with Torres and Suarez goes and has the goat epl individual season. Liverpool also made a 50m pound profit off him so honestly, even if he doesn't care about the club like others he still seems like a legend in my book.
