shoutout to the dad for believing in his son, supporting him, and giving him good advice
Yeah damnright!
I was thinking the same, what a dad!
It's amazing to think that if he hadn't been such a good dad maybe we'd never have had Supergiant Games and their amazing titles
+1
Seriously. Who knows what other amazing creations we're missing out on due to shitty parents tearing their kids down or holding them back instead of being like Amir's dad.
"The kid sees a notification for NoClip, decides he'll take a load off and relax for a time..."
One of the best mixtures of narrative and music. Ending theme is forever in my heart. It was... cathartic.
No exaggeration the part with rescuing/forgiving Zulf made me a more sympathetic person, one of the most emotional moments I've ever had playing video games
That moment was so well writen. Woving the narrative with gameplay in such an elegant way that seriously made me cry while playing. That, in my opinion, changed the game from being a great game to a masterpiece!
I have difficulties trusting people who left Zulf. Best scene in an already great game
Yes, I cried during that scene
I actually changed my mind about Zulf before the ending, when going in to his "dream" arena instance and understanding the reason for his fit of rage as well as how he was first found by the Kid there gazing agape at the sky.
Transistor and Pyre docs coming early 2020, along with the latest episode of Hades: Developing Hell.
(shout out to our friends at Giant Bomb for the "Building The Bastion" footage)
Happy holidays folks. Our Outer Wilds doc lands next week.👍
NOTIFICATION GANG!!!!!!
@@samsitter9253 #NOTIFICATIONGANGFTW
outer wilds doc yessssss
TRANSISTOR AND PYRE TOO?!?!?! YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!!!
Noclip Can’t wait for the Outer Wilds doc! These guys are great... I loved the Hades doc too! Cheers
These guys are all brilliant examples of what the games industry is capable of
2:50 you’re only 25, whereas another parent would say you’re already 25
Gene Zhao Lol, so true. My parents said the exact same thing when I wanted to pursue a similar path. “You’re already 21”
Once, I was trying to console my girlfriend (I forget for what) and, at a loss for what else to do, I just started humming Build That Wall. She hasn't played or seen Bastion, but she still knows that song and asks me to sing it for her every once in a while nearly 10 years later. So...thanks, Supergiant. You guys are incredible.
I finally met the narrator of Bastion! I always loved his voice. He brought life to Bastion and stories told by him has a solemn gravitas to it. Meeting my favorite developers in this video has been amazing.
The art provided by Jenn is fantastic. The use of color and isometric environment she had lend an extra layer of culture to the worlds. Art in superiant games provide a story. Enemies by her has an authentic yet exotic feeling to it.
There's a reason Supergiant are my all-time favorite devs. It's not because their games are amazing (they are, of course they are), it's because you can tell how much of themselves all the wonderful people there put into every single project. They put everything they have into everything they do, and you can see it and you can hear it and you can feel it in every one of their games.
I am glad that they are doing fine . I don't know way i thought they went under after Transistor , i thought that the game was not recieved too good. Anyway i played Bastion , enjoyed it very much and i played some of Transistor , sadly i couldn't finish it bc of some stupid error . Over all i really enjoyed them , Bastion is my favorite so far . How are the other games ?
I remember watching someone, probably TotalBiscuit making a vid on it when it released, immediately bought it on xbox, and lost myself in it. When I stopped playing on consoles, I bought it again on steam. Still have the OST on my phone and listen to it from time to time.
these kind of documentaries encourage me to make a game myself
I have a similar feeling, too bad am not an artist or a programmer, but i'd love to design a game
@@mdawni6933 this guy made 100s of thousands of dollars without writing a single line of code or making art for his game www.inverse.com/gaming/37252-the-first-tree-indie-game-fox
Read that as proof then start building your game bro
@@mdawni6933 No one is anything until they take the time to become it. I have to remind myself of that every day--especially when I look at the work of other extremely talented artists (who all put in the time). Pick a place to start and don't stop; you can always change course along the way (as the documentaries example). It also helps if you can find a community or make friends with other passionate creators. Good luck to you :)
same here, i would love to do audio and music work for video games and creative stuff like darren :)
I remember this game having one of the first soundtracks that I would have on every electronic device that could play music. When I first heard A Proper Story I had the volume up way high and was wearing my over ear studio headphones, it felt like the bass actually vibrated my teeth a bit when it kicked in, hahaha.
I still hum Build That Wall from time to time.
I know WAY too much about this tiny crew of humans. I've watched so many documentaries, interviews, GDC talks, and behind-the-scenes footage of them that when I saw them at PAX showing off Pyre a couple of years ago, I was starstruck and just smiled awkwardly. Darren was so nice and gave me an extra Transistor sticker for free :D
I dig my hole, you build a wall ~♬
I dig my hole, you build a wall ~♪
_One day that wall is gonna fall ~♫_
♥
So build that wall and build it strong, 'cause we'll be there before too long...
Woke up this morning and I was thinking about supergiant games and how I LOVE LOVE LOVE their games, I have them all. Bastion was the first one I ever got and I was so in love with it. When they released Resistor, I bought the game not realizing I didn't have the graphic card specs to run it on my potato computer at the time, so I bought a graphics card just so I can play it. This morning, I woke up wondering how they came to be a gaming company and jokingly searched in CZcams to look it up and this video is everything I was curious about. I didn't even think someone would be making documentaries like this - instantly subscribed to you Noclip, great job. Moving on to the untold story for the Transistor game now.
Bastion was the 1st indie game I ever played and it was ironically at a time when I was much, much younger and didn't think highly of indie titles, or at least the idea of playing anything but AAA/AA to me was absurd. Everyone was talking about it and I still didn't want to try it. Needless to say, spending $4 on Bastion when it went on sale and having it blow my mind when I was spending $80+AU on AAAs that lasted 2-3 hours like CoD at the time, was a pretty big reality check and I never underestimated the potential of indie games ever again.
Because of Bastion, a vast majority of my backlog & wish list consists of indie titles.
a making of disco elysium would be amazing
Yeah I'd love to hear about how they engineered the bajillion strands of personalities in that game, it must have been such a complex process
Thank you Amir's dad! Without you there wouldn't be all these amazing games by one of the most incredible studios on the planet.
That moment when Greg was explaining about the ending - right in the feels. To this day this game remains the best Supergiant game for me as well, I own it on PC, PS4 and Switch. Beautiful masterpiece. I may not be a supporter or a patreon, but Noclip - thank you for this video, meant a lot to me.
Thanks for having a clip of Ryan in this, always makes me smile when I see him. Supergiant's story is so cool. I'm glad their labour of love paid off.
Supergiant's games a good example where you may not care for a game but can still appreciate the quality and care made to produce it.
For me the mechanics of the game don't speak to me. It's the type of game, it's just not for me. But I know the games are objectively good games.
I still buy the games to support the studio and to just take lessons on their production quality.
I love all 4 of their games personally, and Hades is my fav so far.
But yeah, making a game like that is when you've peaked tbh.
Just like the original Zelda. I don't like it personally, but admire it's legacy and innovation.
I’m the kind of guy who likes anything Bastion before I’ve even seen it. Supergiant games is amazing 👌🏼
Yees!
Thank you Noclip! I can't get enough of Supergiant documentaries, see you in next one :P
P.S. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
Thanks Simon, same to you!
I still remember the moment when I opened Bastion on my computer for the first time. I remember the table I was sitting at in my home. I just sat with the opening screen for a few minutes because that intro music was so good. I know many games have excited me over the years, but none were nearly as memorable
A beautiful game with an amazing soundtrack
Saving Zulf was my favorite moment and oh boy did the narrator absolutely nail it.
Logan is incredible
That Logan never thought he would win a best video game actor award someday. It’s so amazing when you see things like this backward.
Goddamn I love theses guys, I could hear them talk about everyone of their games or their work forever
I noticed that guy getting reprimanded for attacking after the ceasefire for sure.
I wish to offer my sincere congratulations to Amir Rao for finally having implemented a farming system in Hades 2. It took over a decade but you got it!
@27:51
What a bittersweet surprise. Thank you, NoClip.
Brought tears to my eyes. Really reminded me of my own time when we came together to make our first game "Christmas Magic +" for the iPad. Sadly we didn't get to ship another game , these guys did. We had another game going and six more planned. It's beautiful to see passion take form and become an experience that others get to live from then on. Wish it works out for everyone out there making new experiences! Here's a wish that everyone's passion connects people together and pays off so that they can keep working on ! As Kojima says," Keep on Keeping on !"
Thanks for this documentary; I absolutely adore Bastion. It's one of the very few games that I almost religiously gift to people when I find out they haven't played it yet. It's just a perfect storm to me of amazing atmosphere, solid gameplay, breathtaking music and outstanding visuals. I still vividly remember the first time I carried Zulf through the Ura camp while "Setting Sail, Coming Home" started playing and I began weeping during it. The only game in recent memory to do this is NieR:Automata's ending with "Weight of the World" during the E ending. When I look back I'm pretty sure it was Supergiant and Bastion that broke me for most AAA games and I started to mass consume smaller indie titles for which I regret nothing.
Adam Kovic from the Inside Gaming days @ 0:44
I forgot how amazing the music was. I also wish more games worked like this. This style of game is 100% how you make a game.
Amazing work as ever ❤️
This was the first video game that ever made me cry. At the end, when I and countless others forgave our enemy knowing he was just as human as the one playing this game. Watching his own people betray him and knowing he needed someone to lean on just as so many of us did in our lives. I carried him to where he needed to be.
35:10 seeing everyone else’s work come together is an awesome feeling
36:10 same
It is so wonderful seeing Supergiant front and center, comparing their experiences from Bastion to now with Hades. Thank you for bringing these developers into the spotlight, they're one of a kind!
I think Supergiant Games have something really special going and I'm very happy for them :)
And yes, the end scene actually made a huge difference for me ;)
I fucking love bastion, so happy to see a documentary about it
One of my favourite game studio, main reason is their support for linux platform, Thank you Supergiant.
Well, I guess it's time for a re-play! Thank you for creating this documentary. The game always felt special, it had a depth rarely felt in computer games. Seeing this video and watching the interviews with the creative bunch behind Bastion, it all falls into place: first and foremost, this was a labour of love.
Ahhh, the good old XBLA times... I'm so glad I played Bastion, I loved it.
That's why I've been wearing this profile pic for a long time haha
Seeing Ryan David at 27:53 warmed my heart. Miss that dude bunches.
100% agree. :(
RIP Ryan Davis
im soo glad you decided to go with Bastion since i fell in love with the music of it as soon as i heard it!!
Absolutely fantastic doc! Thank you! Bastion is still one of my most memorable games up to this day.
Fantastic work you guys! Supergiant Games is quickly becoming my favorite game developer thanks in great part to your documentaries.
I didn't use to care much for games such as Pyre, Spelunky, Outer Wilds and indie games in general, but thanks to you it has now become one of my favorite type of games/genre.
It's so satisfying and heart-warming getting to know these passionate and hard-working groups of people, who go the extra mile and pour their hearts and souls in the games they develop. Their dedication and effort deserves all the praise and I'm glad the industry has developers such as Supergiant to keep surpassing expectations and delivering such fantastic, fun and compelling experiences.
You guys over at NoClip also deserve a never-ending amount of recognition and gratitude. Your passion and the work you're doing in the games industry hasn't gone unnoticed. You guys fucking rock! Thank you so much!
velopers from all over the world
Thank you for making me finally buy Bastion. What a FANTASTIC game, thanks Supergiants for being on GOG too. Happy Xmas and Happy New Year!
Great work as always Danny/Noclip team
One of my favourite games to date :') It's wonderful to see how much the team appreciates and loves working with each other. Looking forward to the next Supergiant docs!
Really great Doc! Loved the deep dive and the storytelling!
Hey Jeremy, you did an amazing work editing this doc. Congratulations
I'm glad this game dev studio exists. And a big thumbs up to the dad who believed in his son and gave him his house as a starter studio.
this game went from "the game that my (not yet) boyfriend ignored me for while we were hanging out" years ago to "the game that made me cry over the end mission", and now i'm demanding he finish playing it
Seeing all the love behind this game was simply beautiful. Playing it felt exactly like that. The scale of it was just perfect
What a likable group of people! I’m so happy for them that it paid off! I had never heard of Bastion, but just bought it. Awesome stuff!
Bastion still has a special place in my heart. Thanks for making this
Thank you! What a gift!
Just watched it in full. Bravo!
Thank you guys for working on this and thanks to the Super Giant Team for allowing this story to happen.
This video was beyond incredible! Loved seeing them talk about the process and sometimes randomness of making this game
One of the most beautiful games to see and hear and play. Thanks for making this.
Damn, this game is a great piece of art. The visual, gameplay and sound are so fine. They set up into a single piece and bring such a deep atmosphere to Bastion...
I'm glad I had the chance to discover and play the game, it definitely changed the way I draw things now and how I play games also. Thanks guys, you did great ^^
Such a badass team of talented folks. Great documentary!
Such an incredible story and such an incredible job reporting about it, thanks a lot, Noclip!
Great piece.
Ryan's face popped up in the Pax footage with Greg and Jeff and I got a huge wave of nostalgia and a tiny kick of sad for Ryan. Weird how just spending time watching and listening to folks you don't actually know can still have a profound a effect.
One of my favorite games of all time, i still listen to the soundtrack from time to time
So good. Very inspiring to hear Jenn talk about her design process and inspirations!
One of if not my most favourite game studio. Amazing doc!
oh wow, cormac mccarthy is probably my favorite author. really interesting to learn that he was an inspiration for this game, which i also loved.
also, not to take anything away from bastion, but as i was watching this i kept thinking "man, i'd love to learn more about the development of Transistor" and then i see the comment that a Transistor doc is coming.
i think i'm going to boot that up and play it agian.
Thank you for existing, danny and noclip.
One of my all time fav games, really cool to see this documentary on these talented people
i'm glad i play this game in my psvita. I love the sound, music, story and art of the game
Probably the best indie studio working today. Love these guys!
So unbelievably pumped to see his in my feed
Watching passionate people talk about what they love to do is always so entertaining. Stunning game, enjoyed every minute of it. Looking forward to Hades!
Supergiant is my favorite game development studio.
Danny, I love your little cameo near the end. Great work as always noclip team.
It's a great game, and even after all this time, the memories come back. This puts a smile on my face, and a warm feeling in my heart. I love hearing the devs talk, and how human they sound. It's great to hear... people make games. Indie teams are indie teams, and it's great to hear and feel the individual people working on a single vision.
This was such an cool video man and great job for entertaining us :]
The only game that has made me cry.
A fantastic work of art.
One of my favourite games of all time. It's just so fulfilling. One of my favourite studios of all time. Glad to see when talent and hard work pays off.
Bastion - the LEGO of game design, ethic and skill. Thanks for these docs, noclip and supporters!
Thanks for the videos!
This was amazing. Can't wait for the Transistor one.
Same
Watching this after the final episode of Developing Hell is absolutely wild; they're all so young! Love these guys, and long may they keep working their magic. Thanks a million for doing what you do, Noclip.
What a fantastic documentary, thank you for this
A slap of nostalgia as I watch the original Gamespot guys....
So inspiring, I really hope supergiant get the mainstream recognition they deserve
This is my definition of a perfect game.
Just wanted to say thank you to anyone who worked on this. You fucking nailed it.
A beautiful story about a beautiful game!
It’s in my Top 10 games ever played and remains the only game to date where I was so invested, that I actually paused the game and pondered for over ten minutes, before finishing it. It definitely made an impact. I can also recommend their prints, got some for Bastion and some of Red. 😊
Bastion, Noclip, Documentary
YES
Damn, need to go back and play this again.
Thank you so muuuuuch !!!
I'm 15 now and I played Bastion when I was 8-9 when my dad showed me, this changed my perspective on videogames in general and I loved it, I still sometimes come back just to feel the nostalgia, I'm go glad this video got recommended to me lol
Thank you for the christmas present ! I am a young french journalist and your work give me inspiration to make press article as good as your work in video games ! That said, If you have a moment I will be honored to talk to you and maybe to do an interview of you and your team Danny
I remember buying this game as part of the Summer of Arcade and must have played it every year since it came out. Good job on the doc and thanks Supergiant for the amazing game! It's easily one of my top 5 games like, overall
I've seen so many generic games these days, it's difficult to find something fresh and beautiful at the same time. The art work is game is really beautiful and the game play is fresh. So much respect to the artist and programmers for this game, plus the story and general design is such a joy to play. Great job guys.
I love this game on my PSVITA so great to see where it came from and how much work it took to make it.
