Overclocking the GTX 650

- We explore the forgotten potential of the GTX 650 with a subtle overclock with a mix of both new and classic game titles.
---
This video is a bit of a Spiritual successor to my “Overclocking the 5450” video made many years ago. The intro gives a bit of a nod to that video.
This video is a bit of a humorous story really in the sense that WilleWD and I thought it would be fun to try pump out a fast video giving a nod to the 5450 one. To challenge ourselves to see how fast we can make a video.
However I went down a rabbit hole of making graphics, buying a smoke machine to get cool shots and wanting to
get proper game capture footage.
Almost 2 weeks later, here we are. I hope it will make for an enjoyable watch.
Special thanks to WilleWD and his sister for their production assistance.

The old Green Ham gaming vibes are hitting hard with this new video
It seems that jobs are temporary, but gaming is forever.
ikr, it reminds me of the HD 5450 video. He's eating in that one, too.
just found this channel but it feels like og youtube
the smoke at the start of the video reminds me of the video with the 360 smoking a cigarette@@awesomeguysuncle
Tim's pc being a ryzen 5 3600 and a rx 5700x is the least surprising thing I've ever seen. It's also comforting knowing this man hasn't changed a bit. Also what a great touch that the start off this video is the exact same to the one he did about the hd5450
the hd5450 was my 1st gpu
@@d3fault1420 reported
@@d3fault1420 my 2nd GPU, I put it through hell tbh
@@aleksandarristic5783 i did the same with mine until i got a new pc
So glad to see more regular uploads. I watched these videos as a kid with no money trying to game on terrible pcs. I have a powerful pc these days, but still love these low end videos.
Lol same. I got a 4070ti now but still watch low end computer content. It's fascinating seeing somebody try to squeeze every last frame out of something that's already very tired!.
Bro same. In fact I didnt have any PC and was totally broke as a kid(my parents were not really financially good back then). However this video gaved me hope and motivation that one day I will build or get something similar, which indeed happened few years later when I got into high school. Crazy to think that now I have a PC which back then I couldnt even dream of! This just proves that If you believe into something you can accomplish anything. It make take some time, step by step but It will be worthy. Damn, typing this comment made emotional for f sake 😅
Hard to believe these cards are overs 10 years old now. I remember when it was brand new.😅
What's even crazier... The 8800gt I have laying around is less than 3 years away from 20
I had one of these in 2014 for my first build 😂. It was terrible but I was fairly young and just happy to have a PC. Quickly updated it to the gtx 1070 on 2016 when that launched which then lasted me 7 years.
The nostalgia brought me back love your videos. And i still rewatch older videos till this day
@@KebongaPvP you accidentally responded to my comment.😅
I remember buying this exact 650 brand new and being so, so impressed coming from antique Pentium 4 systems with equally antique video. And yet, it's beyond even low-end now and i've got an RTX 3090. Where'd the time go?
And yes, mine had that same buzz coming from it's fan. Probably the most audible noise my PC made at the time. Loved it anyway.
I had a Pentium 4 back when it was... well, only slightly old, but still viable! 😊
The GTX 650 was my first ""gaming"" GPU, before that I had one of the GT GPUs not the GTXs, when I first tried Battlefield 3 with it and went from 19~21 fps at lowest settings 1366x768, to 30 fps on Ultra at the same resolution (that was the native res from my monitor), my mind was blown, I have only good memories with it and now that I have a laptop with the GTX 1650, I feel like this card never really left me, great video.
i remember the old GT cards being a console gamer i was so co
fused why someone would want a non performance models and now im looking at prices of gpu"s today and just wow
The internet is truly blessed to have a "PC Gaming" channel like yours! Aside from the cinematography being just absolutely unique for this genre of CZcams videos, you explore things that many others do not really look back on too often (like the GTX 650 or an HD CRT).
I think it would be cool to do something with Windows 7 one of these days since everyone in their 20s seems to be getting quite nostalgic about it now. It truly was the peak of Windows.
she's smoking hot baby yeah
My friend once had a GTX 650. It was actually the exact same model as the one in the video. EVGA always tended to trend on the side of caution, with overpowered cooling and VRMs.
The overclocking potential of the GTX 650 comes as no surprise. Kepler is a very interesting architecture, it was unrefined but had lots of potential. The GTX 650 paved the way of the Maxwell GTX 750 and GTX 750Ti. It could be said Kepler and Maxwell was the last generation for budget gamers on price to performance on the new market. Truly a legendary card from back in the day.
750 wasn't Kepler
@@jm036 comment edited to fix error, Geforce 700 series was complicated 😂
so glad to see more or less regular updates on the channel
I actually have a gtx 650 and a very similarly performing card - a gt 740 lying around
now I want to see what they have to offer in 2024
Can't believe that one more year just ended, time is really flying by
Thank you for the video, Tim
Very happy you are back
Best wishes, Daniil
Think the 650 and 740 are the same GK107 chip.
@@jm036 Damn man
I knew that those two are pretty close in terms of performance but I didn't even realize they are the same thing but clocked differently
Thanks for the information, brother
can you run them in SLI?
I love the fact that the intro is JUST LIKE The older one where the 5450 was overclocked! Love the nostalgia bro!
I'm so happy you're back, thank you so much for this
Absolutely love your new videos. Getting some hardcore OG GHGTV vibes, and it couldn’t be any better!!
Delighted to see uploads from you in my feed! Had a lot of fun watching this one
2GB EVGA 750 Ti SC user over here in the UK. Still runs nicely on a Q9650 XP/8.1/Zorin 17.1 build. Comes complete with the limited edition optional extra metal backplate as well. Thanks for giving it's cousin some love here on your video.
Im so glad youre back making new videos consistently!
Its cool seeing what this little card can run when overclocked
Throwback to the HD 5450 video from like 10 years ago in the beginning, awesome!
Heya, I just wanna say that it's awesome to see more uploads by you, dude! Especially with this level of editing, still. Genuinely, love this stuff and have loved it for like, the five or six-ish years that I've watched it. Been watching the olds and the news and just feel such a charm with it all
Love you man, I am so happy you've come back. Keep it up:)
This video was magic. Each of your videos is like a meditation. I feel calmer and better, inspired after watching.
Seeing you back regularly, like the good old days, is something I’ve been looking forward to seeing for years.
I’ve been watching you since about 2017, and this is my first comment (that I can remember). Love your content, man!
is the gpu burnt nope just over cooked🤣🤣
This video just convinced that you're 100% back. Fantastic, thank you.
Love the throwback to the 5450 video intro
is it burnt?
no just well cooked... but. not burnt
Great job on editing and visuals, very pleasant to watch
so glad your back uploading I used to watch your videos back in the day when I was like 14/15
Love you mate, keep making fun video's and experimenting. ❤
This was a proper return to form mate great stuff
Nice video, also liked that the intro was exactly the same as the 5450 video, watched that so much back in the day, instantly recognized it
I love the casual runescape music in the background

*THERE I AM GARY THERE I AM!!!*
by gravy i dont think ive ever laughed so hard seeing that mailbox segment
amazing as always!
also nice callback to the HD 5450 episode!
The smoothness of the infographics at like 7:00 is just buttery; great stuff
HOLY SHIT, I've been looking you up like once or twice a year waiting for this return
i love this type of content! seeing what type of gaming you can squeeze out of "dead" cards like this is right up my alley. i hope to see more!
Again a video that could be a boring mess of CZcams junk.
The 1000 time test of an old hardware.
But no my friends this video is informative and sparkles from the creativity and effort put into it.
Thanks again GHG.
HALLELUJAH! I'm so glad you're making videos again! Always enjoyed your content!
Oh shit nice seeing this in my sub box - Hope youve been well mate!
just what i needed. thanks for the video bro!
The gingerbread house transition was beautiful. My first graphics card was a gtx 650. Coming from a MacBook with NVIDIA 320m was amazing whole new level of graphical fidelity.
Intro music is fire! Great video just as before!
please tell me i’m not the only one getting the constant references to “overclocking the dreadful 5450”😭
Love that GHGTV is making videos again.
Nice having you back GHG.
Another excellent video by the Maestro...
Keep up the great work bro...
You Are The Best...👍👍👏👏
I love the 650 (i had a 2GB as my main GPU not so long ago) and the decision about buying and old used GPU came in big part thanks to your videos.
I never got to overclocking it since i didn't wanna break it, but its a card that served me well since 2020 till last year when it was replaced with a GTX 1050ti which just a few weeks ago got replaced for a RX6600.
I just want to let you know i value each upload you make.
where was this channel on my many year of youtube, "chefs kiss for appreciation"
incredibly well made video, loved this
I love the energy this channel emanates!
Glad you made this video bro, I once built a secondhand gaming PC for my friend to play with me and it had a 650 in it that sadly went a bit too high in clockspeed and gets no signal to the monitor anymore. Happy to finally see the benchmarks lol.
I absolutely loves these videos, thank you :)
you're Finally back to making videos so happy
Oh my LORD, THANK you for putting the names of songs near the end. I KNEW I had heard one of them but couldn't pinpoint it. It as the Kung Foo Theme from EyeToy Play! I hadn't heard that in YEARS, ever since I last played it on my PS2 :D Thank you for the flashback x3
Omg guys he’s paying homage to the hd5450 video!!! He’s using the same lines and camera angles and everything
Tim, you’re tugging at my heart strings. The Nostalgia is killing me
i love how you still use some music you used years ago, it gives me a lot of memories from watching your videos when i was a kid
Also i had to do a double take at 2:44 when you said 4060 lol
Happy new years! 🥳
I got this video in my suggestion today, on CZcams I was so excited, a new ghg video are you kidding me. my face lit up. Then it said it was like 10 years old. Oh man I can’t wait for him too make another video. 😂
Been watching since I saw Draynor get more ram to prove a point. Ill never forget you Tim your videos always make me feel better when I am down. Keep up the good work !
Fantastic video!
your films and the style are a thing a beauty
Great video Mate
I owned one of these in my first (built by me anyways) gaming rig, this was the best card ever because its so understated, the 1 gb of VRAM is the limiting factor but the fact their is a 2 GB version makes it actually be a compelling extreme budget choice. I have a 2 GB and the aforementioned one I owned was a 1 GB card. Both are beautiful GPUs in their own rights.
I haven't overclocked in forever but I still find 1306 with no instant crashes pretty impressive, great job GHG!
1:04 love the colorful 650 text that matches ur channel logo, details matter !
"Overcloking old GPUs in 5 in the morning." Those are the the times and best memories.
Amazing video, absolute banger
This video inspired me to revitalize a thrift store pc I wasn’t sure what to do with using a 600 series card. Granted, I went with the 680, but I wouldn’t even have thought to go that far back if not for this video. Love the vibes and the inspiration!
I love this channel ;;
so many memories from 2010 when I overclocked and vmoded a nvidia 8400gs, put a big heatskin on it and put it next to the A/C fresh air to be able to play
My goat is SO back
My face instantly lit up when I heard that Gran Turismo music. Knew this was going to be a great video.
I LOVE this video. Wanna know why? You sound excited and your friend seems to be helping with that! Its great to see you doin good
that nostalgia hits when the benchmark music came
that intro gave me the most pleasant deja vu i've ever felt haha
Hello Tim, I am very long time fan!
It may be worth researching fan made, open source or community made drivers that keep old cards alive. These can help extend it's life, as well as the overclocking. It was great to see some huge gains with the OC, especially some of the 0.1% lows that doubled.
LowSpecGamer has now left the scene of getting the most out of minimum specs, moving to a journalistic approach of the industry. This does leave a gap for someone who has a love of old cards to optimise game settings, using settings file tweaks, low resolutions/settings, frame generation wth FSR and many more techniques to make what seem impossible to run games, actually possible.
A series testing games minimum specs, and then overclocking those parts to see what you can get out of them would be great. Furthermore how with a small budget you can increase your FPS per 'currency'. The good thing about minimum specs is that they are old, affordable and easy to work with, with lots of online documentation.
I forgot how much I loved these videos
Been waiting for a redux of the Overclocking an HD5450 video for a long time. Especially because I now have an HD5450 kicking it in Eugene, my beloved server.
GHG uploading makes my day
I remember the GTX 750Ti by Zotac such a capable card, nostalgia is hitting so hard. Thanks for video :D
and they say that only men age gracefully this baby is still rocking 10 years after the fact
I had forgotten all about your channel because you hadn't posted in years. Now that I've got a CZcams ID and they recommended a video I'll have to catch up with the past two years, all 8 videos that I apparently missed.
WHY 😂 I absolutely adore seeing your videos, back in the days as well! Let's strap in and see what this Ole card has!
Perfect, I needed a replacement for my gtx 1080. Thanks Tim!
I had this card for way longer than i would like to admit
this is the GHG I've been longing for
Great video as always🫡
yeah and its 2am friday morning and I'm watching this
When I first started watching your videos I picked up a 750ti and it served me well for a long long time 😁
These new videos are absolutely lovely
good to see you agin bud. i had that exact card but the sc version i replaced it with what i still have and Asus R9 Nano
Damn, I was around grade 6 when that came out.
By the way, welcome back! :)
Thank you for the guide! Previously running Starfield on my gtx 650 fps fluctuates between 0-1 fps. Now its a stable 1 fps!
This evga overclock is better than linus's recent evga vid hahaha. Well done mate!
That whole intro sequence was a trip down memory lane. I sort of find it hard to believe how old these cards are now.
Ahh reminded me of the days when I had a 860M Laptop. Probably not exact performance but maybe somewhere there. Right after that laptop I managed to snatch a GTX 1060 full sized GPU in a laptop and it still serves me till today. Never underestimate older hardware.
Time flies!
I remember wishlisting and bookmarking the ASUS 650 and the 660/ti's because they seemed so good
10:44 SUBSCRIBED. Us old computer fiends must stick together.
Just went through a break up, and you start uploading frequently again. I missed you man!
great effort mate :) i really like that comparison style of visuals you have put on this video. Still i wouldnt mind if the specs story would be a pit shorter like (under 1 minute story and specs on display) the more video size stays in 10-13 minutes the more enjoyable youtube experience would be (more subscribers) also intro max 1minute or youtube sins are made again :( . ps waiting for the next video hoping you mind to use Nimez 3rd party driver update for maximum combatability also remember to flush existing drivers with DDU plz.
This is good broo❤
My buddy sent me the xfx r7 360 in the mail as a place holder for my rig when i built it back in 2015. That old card paired with my I5 4690k always surprised me. I was never playing anything crazy though. Alot of Bad company 2, Warband, Arma 3, and CSGO. I was more than happy to replace it with my GTX 970 (which i was still using that 970 up until last year), but i sure did appreciate that little card and what it was capable of.
11:33 I had that same ASUS GTX 650, it was the first card I ever saved up for and bought myself. An upgrade from the pre-installed GT 610.
And despite the extra horsepower I pretty much exclusively used it to get better FPS in Source games. Great card until the plastic fan thingy literally fell off inside the tower and I was out of warranty.
the opening music gave me whiplash
Had the 650 until 2015, can't believe a low end gpu could play everything in that period at high settings easily. Now with a 6600xt I could barely play AW2 at low settings 720p lol!
Your vibe hasn't changed a bit man, so glad you're back!!
sounds like you have extreme gpu bottleneck bro with a gpu that strong you need a strong CPU as well plus you should be running 32gb of ram atleast
My cpu is a skylake i7, runs doom eternal in triple digits framerate, minimum requirement on AW it's an i5, so optimisation doesn't exist.
man this background sound is legend
