- Raised alpha fetoprotein (AFP) can be caused by presence of liver cancer. We recommend testing AFP in patients at risk of liver cancer
Hepatitis b is a risk factor for liver cancer, or hepatocellular carcinoma. We test AFP in hep B carriers, together with either ultrasound scan or MRI scan of liver every 6 months, to screen for liver cancer
Liver cancer that are diagnosed on screening have a much better prognosis than those who are diagnosed when there are symptoms
