  • Moving on from the Spray Foam issues we start to focus on other tasks that need worked on and there are a lot of them. Today we work on mounting and venting the RHEM Prestige Professional Tankless Combo Boiler. This is a propane boiler that is made to run the radiant heat flooring as well as produce domestic hot water for the main kitchen, clean kitchen room, and two bathrooms.
    I've never installed one before so what you don't see in the video is me reading the instructions and researching a lot. Even after all that I might have messed up the venting. After consulting the instructions again and talking to our HVAC guy I feel we'll be ok. The only side effect of my mistake might be a toxic icicle.
    We do not plan to actually use the boiler right now but it needs to be mounted and out of the way so we have room to work on other projects. Right now the rooms it would supply heat to aren't being used.

    Were the holes in your mounting bracket 16" OC? My bracket has the mounting holes at something like 10 3/8"... Really frustrating if I have to pull off my drywall and add blocking!

      I can't remember, think so. You could always mount some plywood to your wall over the drywall instead of blocking. I wish mine stood off the wall a little more because all the piping is really tight. Just 3/4" would have made a difference.

    You need to have a manual J completed on your home to calculate the number btus needed to heat your home on a degree day. Your exhaust can not pitch to the outside it’s a condensing boiler it will become a problem it needs to pitch from the exterior to the boiler not to mention condensate has a PH of 3.5 that your dumping outside , your pvc pipe should not be insulated in any way it will cause the pvc to warp and discolor , you absolutely need to remove it and replace it with cpvc , Cpvc Is rated for the temperature .please make sure you fix these issues , If you do not I guarantee you will shorten the life of your boiler and have chronic issues

      Thank you for your post. We always want to hear what others think. I will go through and check everything out again to make sure. A boiler is new to me and I've found that you need to ask a good 3 or 4 times before a true picture becomes clear.
      I had a lot of the same questions and was told that the unit doesn't get hot enough to require cpvc (in fact it is in the manual) and could be insulated since the temperature insignificant enough. I have thought about ripping the insulation out around the pipe anyway.
      The condensation flowing outside is an issue. I was told it would basically cause icicles to form and they would be acidic. Besides that I was told it wouldn't effect the operation of the unit.
      I looked into the heating capabilities of the boiler and just recently called them to ask some additional questions after our friends at Heart Break Orchard (CZcams Channel) asked some questions too. I was told that the unit would heat a standard construction 1500sqft home fine. My calculations showed that we could heat much more but the area that it is being used in is less than 1500sqft so we should be ok.

    the pipe is fine. It isnt heat that is going out, it is carbon monoxide. The air coming out will be maybe 10 degrees warmer.

    Boy that radiant heat is going to be very nice. Things are lookin up🙂 Stupid spray foam ! Sucks! If I ever build a place, I'm using Rockwool or what ever that's called. Soooo thank you for the lessoned learned. Is there such a thing as a warranty on the insulation?

      We should have used Rockwood but felt we were in a time crunch wanting to have a nice Christmas and spray foam was supposed to be fast.

    Does it have two seperate burn chambers?

    • @Off-Grid
      @Off-Grid  Před 2 lety

      Just one chamber and then a heat exchanger for the domestic hot water.

      @@Off-Grid i will be calling them tomorrow. That may be the solution I need. Depends on how much SF it is capable of delivering radiant heat for.

      @@breakheartorchard4761 ours is 200,000 BTUs which is more than we should need but sounds about the right size for your build. We will find out this winter since we didn't need to use it last year. I'm in the process of plumbing it right now.
