If you're on the east coast the city is called either DC or Washington. The state does not come up in conversation often, if it does it's ‘Washington state.’ Your friend was from the west so that's why it was only DC to her.

The cool thing about the US is its geographical diversity. We have mountains, hills plains, tons of rivers, lots of islands. We have some of the driest and hottest deserts in the world. Rainforests in Florida, Alaska, and Washington. We have coastal and highland wetlands. Some massive forests. Tundra. Mediterranean climate in California. You name it we have it.

    1. In US we say DC for the capital and Washington for the state
2.The island in New York is called Long Island (Manhattan is a part of New York City) Long Island isn't
3.I live in North Carolina and it is indeed pronounced Raw-lee not Ra-lay
4.You'd be surprised to know Orlando is very small for a city (300k or so people) so is Miami
    5. Boise is pronounced Boy-zee
    6.Topeka is pronounced Toe-Peek-uh
7.Mississippi has recently changed its flag in the past 2 years so it doesn't have the confederate flag on it anymore
8.From a person born and raised in Texas the statement everything is bigger in Texas is 100% true, everything is unnecessarily big.
    9.Cheyenne is pronounced Shy-Anne

    • @sumnerevans
      @sumnerevans Před rokem +13

I pronounce Topeka as toe-peek-uh (from Colorado). Also, the use of Washington is somewhat dependent on context. Whenever referring to political things, Washington is often used instead of DC. For example, you would hear “live from Washington” when they are broadcasting from the capital. But, if you are telling somebody where you are going on vacation, you would say D.C.

Not everyone calls it DC. I'd wager more call it Washington, myself included, because that's the city's name (even if the district is one and the same.)
Florida's cities are typical sunbelt cities whose actual development sprawls far outside their illogically-shaped city limits. While Orlando is not the largest of cities, there's nearly 1.5 million people living in Orange County and over 2 million in the metro, effectively making it a major city. The Miami area is essentially a huge tract of development stretching all the way from West Palm to Homestead, with 6.2 million people in its metro area (the satellite image on Google Maps really speaks for itself.) Not even close to being a small city by any logical measurement, which is immediately evident if you go there and take just a quick glance at the skyline. On the other hand, you have "Florida's largest city," Jacksonville, which is only large because it annexed its entire county. Otherwise it wouldn't even come close to Miami and would lag behind several other cities in the state, including Orlando. This is why it's better to go by metro population in the US rather than city population. We're a suburban, car-oriented society.

Recently found your channel, enjoy all your videos, and now working back. Have a point on the US state shapes that you might find interesting. You’d notice the eastern states are smaller and oddly shaped, while the western are larger and more geometric. The eastern states borders were originally established in the 1700s and mostly follow natural features like rivers or mountain ranges. The western states were established in the 18&1900s along with more sophisticated land surveying. Some western state boundaries do follow natural features, but in a significantly less percentage than eastern states.

I'm very late, but I just want to let you know that Orlando is actually the FOURTH largest city in Florida, which is quite surprising.
Jacksonville, then Miami, then Tampa, then Orlando.
Although, those are misleading numbers since cities should be measured by their metropolitan area including all surrounding suburbs rather than their legal city limits. In this case, Orlando is 2nd largest with only Miami being largest.
Florida's cities are confusing, I swear it's way easier for the rest of the states

I disagree with a lot of what the other Americans are saying about Washington. I grew up on the west coast then lived on the east coast. In the west, when people say Washington, it refers to the state, given the proximity. Whereas in the east when people say Washington, it refers to the city for the same reason. This would be the same as, say, York. If you’re in the UK, people are referring to the city in Yorkshire. In Pennsylvania, they’re referring to the city in Pennsylvania.

It's a really shame that this book is outdated by a few years. Mississippi's flag was changed a few years ago and it's so much more beautiful and blessedly not confederate inspired

I think when I did the video it had just happened (the video itself is a few years old). I heard it was a nice new flag, congrats!

New Orleans is not pronounced as Orleens but as Orlins. So you can say New Orlins rather than Orleens.

I always call it Washington DC. I didn’t realize that at first, though.
Living in Norwich, then Dortmund, Turin, Brussels and now Chicago, Illinois, USA. It’s been quite the journey haha.
US geography can be quite confusing.

You should do a video on urban decay in the US. Gary, Indiana is a failed city. Cairo, Illinois is a ghost town practically. Very fascinating stuff

@@WelshASMR82Maps it’s so depressing that in a first world country we have issues like that. It’s nothing like even some of the most deprived towns in England. Cairo, Illinois is basically gone completely. Wild stuff.

Madison, Wisconsin is a brilliant city if you find yourself in the general area. Absolute class. Much nicer than the other big city in Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Milwaukee is very drab and grey. A bit of a smaller version of Birmingham in the U.K 😂

I hear it isn't the nicest of places. Isn't it built on a swamp and is super humid or something?
