VESC has gone from a “eh, it’s an option but not something i would consider” to my primary way forward for when components on my XR fail and require a replacement/upgrade.
It's my daily driver now!! I swapped my functioning xr to vesc and love it! You should try to find and ride someone's vesc board sometime

@@chrisperrywv I did have a stock battery. But I my own 18s2p pack and both had a ton of torque and speed

I've converted all mine, and selling the ones i'm not. it rides so much nicer then FM firmware in my opinion.

Do you forsee these being built and sold in large volumes? Like most people I love OneWheels but hate Future Motion, I would love to try out a non-FM OneWheel! Especially since they've now raised the price of the GT twice in the UK!

Great video!! Not gonna lie, hearing you struggled a bit makes me very nervous to attempt this! Probably will go with a pre-built box
All things considered, it wasn’t that bad. It was probably about 2 days worth of “I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong” before it was working. My day to day is Eskate work, and I’m so familiar with the remote control sides of VESC that once I hit the Balance App, I was really in new territory.
I think that in time, the documentation will be more fleshed out. Naturally, like DIY always is, the information is often scattered, and piecemeal. Which makes it hard if you need top to bottom education on a new topic.
But that too, will come as more get into it.
I did my best with the article to give a top to bottom picture of the material build, and some of my build philosophies as why I do what I do with wiring.
I’m hoping that after I really wrap my head around it I can contribute to the configuration documentation for other new folks, and offer my perspective as someone new to the Balance app.
I bought a pint before I knew how shitty FM is. Thanks to people working on Vesc I'm not as paranoid about my onewheel being permanently bricked at some point
Really wish there were more open source/DIY VESC and BMS designs, the original price for the Little FOCer was supposed to be around $90 but now they retail for $300 not including a heatsink. Add in a decent BMS like the XLITE for another $250 and at least $500 for a built battery plus all the connectors (assuming you have all the crimpers and other tools like a 20S capable charger/power supply) and you could just buy a brand new Onewheel instead.

I have worked with VESC in the past making DIY skateboards and scooters, so this is just the project for me. However, I am curious. What is the rough total cost once everything is accounted for?

Just had an idea watching this do you think it’d be possible to make a two wheel electric board with like a one wheel sized wheel in the front and the back all the components and stuff inside the board between them? Thought it was a neat idea
How's the battery life compared to a Onewheel? It would be nice if my GT didn't slow down so much when the battery gets to 35%. The acceleration really drops, but it'll eventually get up to speed. It's a champ going up hill until 45% when it takes it easier.

So cool! I've read some criticism of VESC Onewheels online, that in terms of reliability etc they aren't as safe as FM models (stuff like "with a VESC onewheel you *will* take a nosedive sooner or later." What are your thoughts on this?
From what i know this changed. And tbh i got a few nosedives on my stock XR 🙈

Hi, can you help me please, I did add a buzzer to my VESC, also I did enable server output, it beeps but is really really quiet, not sure what is going on
I haven’t installed a buzzer on any of the builds I’ve done. That’s likely a question that could be answered in the Facebook group. Some folks there have wired in a buzzer to their projects.

Board looks great man, how achievable is it for someone with no DIY experience to vesc their XR right now?
If you’re not looking to change the specs of the battery, then it’s not very difficult. MakersPEV provides pre programmed VESCs and parts for reusing most of an XR. This particular build was from collected parts, and custom built parts.
What's the name of these bang bumpers? I've seen "SWAMP" colored ones, but they are more green with black swirls I think...These ones are more black with green swirls. What are they called? Anyone know?
Those specific ones were the Corridor Digital collaboration bumpers.

I don’t currently have extra motors around, unfortunately. But they’re available used on the marketplaces, and the Superflux will be available again soon I think

Curious on top speed and range?
Range, I’ll test soon. Top speed, probably more than I’m comfortable doing on one wheel. Another community member with this same battery was easily hitting 28mph, and pushing into 30. Could probably go faster, but I think pushback is somewhere around 29ish at the current settings. I’m not sure at the moment.
