  • The Cleveland Indians will soon be known as the Cleveland Guardians, and the region's Native American community is welcoming the change.
The team officially announced the name change Friday, which comes following years of protests from local Native American groups.
"Our community has worked tirelessly to be recognized as diverse and vibrant, instead of being portrayed in inaccurate and harmful ways," according to a statement from the Cleveland Indigenous Coalition. "This name change will help create a place where Native American children and their families are valued and fully seen."
The group said they are pleased with the team for taking a comprehensive approach "to listen and learn and show it is possible to take steps toward change."

Probably a lot of Native Americans are like you. I think that it's pathetic that Native Americans are offended by sports teams named after them. These names are meant to HONOR them not to mock them.
And it's pathetic that white owners of these teams feel pressure to change the names.

There has been enough damage done to the natives pride that now any little symbol of pride like a team mascot winning national championships has to be scrubbed away from existence. It’s ridiculous kids can see these mascots and teams winning games and get a sense of pride but better a sense of curiosity. These mascots make kids think and google and find out there real history. And these baby soft advocate groups are grand standing and erasing all of images that make people ask questions. It's not the same as using terms from Native American languages such as "Oklahoma" or "Cuyahoga". Also, naming schools after prominent Native Americans such as Sitting Bull or Pocahontas. However, appropriating culture such as using Chief Wahoo or wearing sacred items such as the red feather or a headdress is unacceptable.

I don't understand how they could not simply retro the logo a bit, a more proud logo of the chief, etc...and keep the name in a very respectful and proud way to honor the history of our Native Americans. Now, nobody will care what the teams are changed from. Our proud history is lessened, less known, less appreciated. What do people thing of when you hear Rams or Patriots? Strength and pride, not insults certainly. 2c.

So the franchise have agreed to change the name. They won't pick up one single fan from changing the name and they'll lose lots of fans from changing the name. Many native American's either didn't care about the name or actually liked it. Not a great move. The only thing they accomplished is to make themselves irrelevant.
One day in the future some native America kid will ask why their culture and people aren't represented in American culture like whites are. Someone will have to explain to them that at one time they had sports teams as well as other things that one represented them until a bunch of pasty white left wingers forced them out.

However, as an American with Indian heritage I am left to wonder if all references of our fundamental national heritage are wiped away, as they have been in Cleveland recently by this marketing campaign, will we still remember our native Indian forefathers and mothers? I am a proud Cleveland fan. I was more proud when the team represented part of my American heritage as the "Indians." I mean, what was more cool than that?? The Cowboys??? Now they are the Guardians!! Jeez. The guardians of political correctness, anti-history, cancel culture in the extreme. What a shame. The good news is the Guardians organization can rename the team whenever the market beckons.

What all of you who endorsed this name change did- and I am speaking to fellow native american nations- is that you took the name of the Cleveland Indians and trampled on it right in front of me. My great great grandmother was a 100% Cherokee native american nation woman whom that even though I would never meet her- it is my belief that she would be insulted and it would not only be a slap in the face to her- but to me and others-because in my heart I believe that her and her ancestors would support the Cleveland Indians name. To find out that it was changed- because of the opinion of a small group of people from other native nations and because of political pressue is PATHETIC! The Cleveland Guardians have no history- to me- THEY DON'T EXIST! It has always been the Cleveland Indians from when I was born and should have stayed that way. Because of this and others- I believe that a FORCED SALE of the MLB franchise should be ENACTED and that it would not only result in a vote of NO CONFIDENCE in the administrator leadership of this franchise and that it be sold to someone who would honor the fans and get our beloved team back.
And folks- a FORCED SALE does work. Look it up.
    One last thing-
I would post a list of names who support the Guardians name change- but I don't want to be sued, harassed or gone after by doing so. But do your research. You'll know who in Cleveland are traitors to the Cleveland Indians fan base and you're probably watching them.
