Resurrecting this: auto-unhook only works when the cargo tension in the shackle drops below 50-70kg. This is so the cargo doesn't just get jettisoned the moment it touches the ground. In the Hip (and in any helicopter to be fair) in a hover situation, especially when extreme precision is needed, like when ferrying cargo, you'll need to find the wind and stay in it, or you'll never get it done. You can also try and 'cheat' a bit by finding the wind, making sure you're steady in terms of yaw with pedals and then turn on the heading hold channel of the autopilot. This will allow you to add or subtract collective without having to work the pedals, which lets you then focus on keeping the helicopter in one place. Keep in mind though that the autopilot will add tale rotor pitch to counteract yawing tendency when increasing collective, so you will also need to add some cyclic to prevent lateral translation opposite the direction of the tail rotor pushing air. Don't exceed 1m/s descent rate, or you'll smash the cargo into the ground.

Regarding the auto-unhook: You'll want to turn it off between cargos. Alternatively you can just quickly cycle it off and on again if you fetched a new cargo and forgot about it. Otherwise it won't work (probably to prevent new cargo to hook and immediately auto-unhook).

I'm on the ground, hooked to the cargo but can't get the cargo indicator to come on. Pressing default keys as defined in DCS Controls/Option but indicator does not come on. Can you think of anything I might be missing?
this can be a nightmare during the oilfield campaign.
It might be easier to hover if you have autopilot on
My Mi8 has only ever talked to me in English. Try flying forward to remove swing.
