“Safe In The Arms Of Jesus”. A lyric video for the popular hymn “Safe In The Arms Of Jesus”, with piano instrumental accompaniment. “Safe In The Arms Of Jesus” was written by Fanny J. Crosby (1820 -1915). The music was composed by William H. Doane (1832 -1915). It was first published in 1870.
Fanny J Crosby was one of the most gifted and prolific hymn writers of all time. Safe In the Arms of Jesus is one of her most beautiful songs.
There are at least two stories about how the song came to be written. One story relates that Fanny wrote the song in honor of her only child who died not long after she was born. As she grieved over her lost child, she found comfort in knowing that it was safe in God’s arms, and was inspired to write the reassuring words of the hymn. The music was then provided by her friend William H Doane the industrialist and composer.

Another story highlights Fanny’s exceptional gifts as a lyricist. It states that one day Fanny was visited by her friend William H. Doane, on his way to catch a train to go to a Sunday School conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. He had composed some music for a new song he wanted to use at the conference, but he did not have the lyrics. He asked Fanny if she would provide lyrics for the song within the 40 minutes that he had at his disposal. After hearing Doane play the song, Fanny told him that his song was saying “Safe in the arms of Jesus”, and duly provided a refrain and three verses for Doane in time for him to take it along on his trip.

Perhaps the full story is a combination of the two narratives. Regardless of how it came to be, we thank God for the gifts of these two legendary hymnists, and specifically for this beautiful hymn, “Safe in the Arms of Jesus”.
