Shooting them if they aren't actively attacking would land you in jail for obvious reasons, but Ideally if you show your capability to defend yourself they won't risk it, and if they do better to have that weapon on your side when fighting for your life than not to have it. After all there was no police response so clearly he couldn't rely on law enforcement to keep him or his property safe and if they won't do it it's up to him to do it himself.

An Asian guy in NY did that a few years ago and he still got jumped. He tried to get away but they caught up to him in NY traffic. There was even an undercover cop that was in the group that jumped him.

When reading comments like yours, I used to roll my eyes and think "what a typical American with their obsession for guns in a country with extremely high gun crime". But to be honest, with the way things are going over there, I don't blame you. You have to protect yourself somehow and in a country with so much violent crime and political corruption there aren't many good options.
The problem is, because you are all so into guns, there are so many more guns on the streets in the hands of bad dudes, and your chances of getting shot are so much higher than in many other countries. So now you have to carry a gun to protect yourself against someone else's gun and that just ends up in way more shootings.
