"thunder in your heart" and "break the ice" are amazing songs
Nothing beats the send me an angel scene.

Nothing says Friday like a trip to the Video Store
Christopher Martin Right?!? I think that’s why they upload these on a Friday. I remember growing up and I couldn’t wait til the weekend when I could rent one movie and one Nintendo or Sega game. FYI, I was born in 1979 so I’m probably a dinosaur to kids watching this
Yeah, I didn't realize how much my childhood conditioned me to video rental on Fridays until I had my own kids and suddenly I was instinctively going to Redbox on Fris
I'm really glad you brought this up, this was a common trend to hit the Eagle Video (local independently owned video store) right after pops came home from work. Must have been because payday was an easily justifiable excuse to rent a few flicks.
What else is there to do in Voorhees?...love the new series James
Christopher Martin true
I loved this movie as a kid, and it influenced me to push my mom for a new BMX bike. I have probably watched this movie 50 times!
You gents are obviously too young, BMX was HUGE in the 80’s!!!
They are from the 80s
they just played to much video games ;)
I bet you remember seeing Gleaming the Cube. I know I do.
@@JonGee420 wat the hell is that???
@@benconway9010 only the most bodacious and rad sk8r movie of the 80s
I saved money for a long time to get a BMX bike after watching this movie. I still have the bike.
I ended up getting a mongoose freestyle because of this movie.
what is it?
Beerdy - Bruce Lee Central what bike did you get man? Come on.
I got the 1988 GT pro performer. Best bike ever.
Mine always got stolen... :(
2019 and still watch this movie a couple times a year. Found out about it when I was a kid after getting a used 1987 GT Performer from an older cousin and he told me to rent this movie
Those of us who were a certain age when this movie came out love it. This was a huge part of my childhood.
"Send Me an Angel" is my favorite 80s song. This movie introduced me to it so it'll always be worth something to me!
The Wizard introduced me to that song. 🤔
That song sucks

LOVED this movie as a kid, and I still enjoy it now. Somewhere I came across a 1080i version on DVD that someone made I think from a dish or directv showing or something. My uncle was into BMX and even made a replica of the ramp Cru is trying to backflip on. BMX Bandits has its place, but I think taking riders and having them act was better than taking actors and trying to turn them into BMX riders. Soundtrack is great on Rad, the stunts are great, the riding is real, and yeah maybe it's a nostalgia trip for me, but it's still worth watching if you haven't seen it.
The movie is deeper than they understand. Only 2 people truly see Cru's talent before he beats Bart Taylor; Kristen and the Duke Best. Kristen does everything to try and inspire him, and Best does everything to try and stop him.
Who's Kristen?
Christian!
I don't really consider that depth, it's just the plot of a cheesy movie.
Skateboarding not big? Thrashin'? Gleaming the Cube?
skateboarding got bigger in the 90's when everyone got the damned popsicle decks
Animal chin?!!!
Skateboarding was regional in the 80s, not national. Do your research.
@@voidremoved it actually went down in the 90s

i was still in my dads balls
I didn't see a robot there though...did i miss something?
Seriously?! That's Rad! Lol but seriously that's really cool, I loved this movie, I was young but it really had me hooked. Thrashin' is another really good one. Gleaming the cube too lol damn I miss the 80s-90s, I might of been kinda young but knew what was up lol!!!
Back in my day you weren't cool unless you raced BMX bikes
this still applies to today
@@jonnie2bad i still got my Haro with the purple rims and matching bear trap pedals
I always wanted Haro Master back in the day. I had a GT Performer with those sweet rims.
+rangoononline yeah, both were awesome bikes, but the Haro Master was just so damn expensive. Same goes for Skyway and Hutch.
Our neighborhood was all about the Vision Skate Wear and doing tricks off of homemade ramps. We were trying our best to be as radical as possible on tight budgets..😄
My daycare had two films, Rad & Beaches. Guess what the all female staff made us watch every week for an entire summer? Not Rad.
:
We had the Ewoks movie. Good times.
They couldn’t afford a copy of the Goonies?!.....Was Sloth too scary for preschoolers..😄
My daycare's go-tos were Ernest Goes to Camp and Willy Wonka.
Maybe..... I wasn’t alive in the 80s or 90s but when I was showing my video game collection to my 40 year old cousin she saw my copy of Goonies II for original Nintendo, had a bit of a nostalgia rush because she hadn’t seen the movie in forever, and was like “Sloth isn’t in that game is he? He always creeped me out as a kid”. This made me laugh because the Goonies was my favorite movie as a 7-year old. Made sure to explain to her about how there was a Goonies 1 game for arcades that followed the movie almost to a tee and sloth wasn’t even in THAT one.
Gleaming the cube... skateboard movie with Christian skater in mid 80's... also about a murder.. would make a great rental review
Robert Brentzel that was a good one
It’s one of the most accurate too. Tony Hawk did stunt work for it.
When my friends and I were in our skater phase , we wore that tape out.
Flea
i used to watch RAD on VHS all the time in my youth.
i still love its RADness.
10/10 would Ass Slide to it anytime.
BMX prom dancing. nuff said.
Rod and Rex spitroasted that freak. You know it happened LOL.
This was filmed in and around Calgary, Alberta, including the neighborhood called Bowness.
I used to live there, and this movie blew all of our minds with how *rad* they made our home seem.
Fun movie!
It's a true Mark in Canadian film making history, proving that Canadians can be rad too
I was unaware this film existed. Let alone filmed where I live.
Nobody cares
@@fastestdino2 No nation's potential radness was ever in doubt.
My dad watched that movie as a kid thousands of times and we loved it when he showed us and I mean it’s like 10 ten favourite movies type thing and I like just came back from Calgary and I just told my dad where it was filmed and now we are like Whattt?????!!!
You don't remember BMX from the '80s? WHAT? Everyone had a BMX when I was a kid. I had a BMX!
I raced BMX in the 80's! This movie was my life!!!
I didn't grow up with BMX bikes around me lol skateboards and motorless scooters sure, not those kind of bikes. We had bikes, just don't recall BMX bikes 🙂
The only thing they know about BMX is Paperboy.
Not one of the people in this video did anything related to sports as a kid. They ALL were movie and game nerds. Not the BMX demographic.
@@Odious_One exactly 💯
Fun fact: the gray jumpsuits the twin bros wear are reused wardrobe from the 1980's TV miniseries 'V' and its sequels.
As someone who rode BMX in the 90’s and 2000’s, my friends and I LOVED this movie for all its cheesy and sappy glory. For all the reasons the rental review guys say they don’t like it, all my friends and I got so much joy out of this movie!
RIGHT ON
these guys are just a little too young to remember but this is a cult classic for those born in the early to mid 70s. Right before video games, bmx was huge. Even this year there was a recreation of the track from the movie and had the star there. google Helltrack 2018... It's 32 years later!
Born in 85, this movie has a special place in my heart.
I was the target audience for Rad when it opened, was into BMX, and super-hyped to see it. I fucking hated it.
Dregory Dewhard exactly!!! 😉 We didn't watch these movies for the plot. We watched them to learn how to do the tricks. No CZcams back then, this was the only way. 😅
feel bad for ya..you might be more into inline skates lol
yep..you had a bmx..you watched this movie along with other Freestyle videos ordered out of BMX magazines..you went out and rode your bike ALL DAY..You either lived the life and "got it"...or you were unlucky enough to be super lame and didnt..lol
If only there was a cinemassacre rental store.
But the video tells you the location of the store though.
But it's in the Voorhes Memorial center next to Caldor
@@XxWolfcastlexX what's caldor is that He-man?
Daniel Yerke tbh I don't really know. I'm not an 80s or 90s kid, from the bit of He Man I've watched though I get the feeling they are not related at all
EDIT: Quick Google search returned a 90s discount store.
@@XxWolfcastlexX oh ok that makes sense thankya
Bribing people to get your kids into elite colleges is so RAD!.😎
The twins' suits at the dance are from the "V" miniseries.
In memory of Burt Reynolds you should do Cop And A Half(1993) next
Agreed
No, in memory of ROGER EBERT ...
it's a legit good film.
If any Reynolds movie, it has to be Deliverance
poor burt
You guys should try Gleaming the Cube with Christian Slater from '89. A bunch of teen skaters take down a crime ring and Rodney Mullen does all the skate tricks!
I'm gonna be that guy*. TECHNICALLY, he only does the up close freestyle tricks where Christian Slaters boards magically turns to a freestyle board while he's Gleaming (the cube).
Sorry for being that guy. You also see Rodney Mullen for like 4 seconds doing the freestyle thing in Breakin'.
is that the one where a young tony hawk works for pizza hut?
I loved his buddy's little hideout
Joey Victorio I loved Gleaming the Cube, last time I saw it was on TV and it was called “A Brother’s Justice.”apparently it was also known as “Skate or Die.”
A SUPER YOUNG tony hawk was in that movie.
When I was a kid, I lived in a group home and we had like 3 VHS tapes and this was one of them, so I have seen this movie probably 700+ times.
Oh come on , Rad wasnt that bad ... and yes it is cheesy as hell but the races and the stunts are awesome
They suck
My favourite stunt it when they fall on their asses what a cool stunt

Rad was one of my favorite movies growing up. I was born in 1982 and remember watching this from a local video rental store. As for a skateboarding movie watch the movie gleaming the cube. That one was great. Also a motorbike movie that was good was the movie called dirt bike kid
Hope GLEAMING THE CUBE is on the list for upcoming reviews somewhere :) THANKS!!!
That movie is fucking awesome
Promise me you’ll do “UHF” with Weird Al some day.
My dad rented this movie for me FROM THE GAS STATION!!! Remember when your corner store or gas station could rent movies? We actually had to sign up and pay to rent from the corner gas station back in 1988. He brought "Rad" and "Adventures In Babysitting" home. One's a classic, the other, not so much. I do remember watching this movie though, back when I was 6 or so.
Are you really Thor? (They're both fine movies)
Here's hoping someone in the store is a skateboard fan because we've got Gleaming the Cube w/ Christian Slater & Thrashin' w/ Josh Brolin.
Classics. Gonna go watch gleaming the cube right now
saigrimm Thanks to the internet I now know what Gleaming the Cube means. So damn cryptic. They should have gone with Skate or Die.
Liked gleaming the cube as a kid. And I didn’t even skateboard.
I loved Gleaming the cube
It must be Friday... because me and everyone else is cueing up our copies of Gleaming The Cube
They have a 4k version coming out. They have finally sent me an angel!
Now it’s on 4K Ultra HD from Vinegar Syndrome. :) it’s Glorious.
rented this so much as a child

I was born in 82.
At least 20 times. Why I didn't just buy it.
My friends owned it. We watched it all the time when we couldn't ride LOL.
YES!!! I ACTUALLY saw this in the theatre... I wear that as a badge of honor, as I'm pretty sure it got a theatrical release window of about 12 hours. ;)
The face James makes when he says "how many BMX movies can there be?" Is so pure, I absolutely love this series.
21:39 Pogs were my shit back in the day! I used to have a huge collection of them with slammers omg! (So much nostalgia here ever!)
I never saw this one, but I saw Gleaming the Cube with Christian Slater.
I saw 'Gleaming the Cube' at the cinema, but I'll be damned if I can remember anything about it.
Rad is not bad
Rad Is not bad. Is crap. (If you Like it cool. I just wanna to say that)
but don't break it
The fact that you say that makes me Glad but it makes me Sad that it's not Bad in like an 80s way.
It does have "Thunder In Your Heart" by John Farnham though.
Dude every one was killing it stunt wise
this was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I had my parents rent it for me multiple times.
These are becoming my favorite videos at the moment, just dudes hanging out in a video store (James's basement). Good times.
Thunder in your heart, send me an angel, RAD has some RAD songs!
Guts Puck that's rad dude
Great episode, but I think you missed two big points about this movie: #1 It had Olympic gold medalist Bart Conner - that alone is worth discussion. However point #2 is a far bigger omission: this movie was Directed by the great Hal Needham! Smokey and the Bandit! Cannonball Run! Hooper! Megaforce! C'mon guys, this film is noteworthy for its Director more than anything
Considering Hal Needham was Burt Reynolds stunt double and directed some of his most famous films, its seems like an odd omission. Although this video was posted a day after the announcement of Burt Reynold's death.
These videos are recorded a month in advance
you left out his greatest ouvre d'art: 'Body Slam' LOLz
It's a discussion about the movie, not a list of everything associated with it.
Agreed. I scanned most of the comments and you are the only other to notice Bart.
Rad was huge in my childhood. One of my favorite movies! Lori Loughlin was hot as hell, too.
"I'm sure there's some kind of skateboard movie-" Holy crap, kick that guy out of the damn store
fununcle I’m a big fan of “{Hot Rod}because I’m like 2 years old, and can’t appreciate some of the good in a movie”.

Y’all better put some respect on “Rad’s” name!!! Also “Thrashin” was the skateboard equivalent of this movie. I LOVE both of them!!!
I love thrashin also...i actually own it on dvd..josh brolin the star of it actually hated it so much after he made it he gave up acting for several years in the late 80s-mid 90s..
I would love this series as a podcast
It basically is haha. Just close your eyes.

RAD was such a fun movie and had one of THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER!!!!

Keep these commin. 3 ninjas, sidekicks, cobra, all the 90s freshness
This film was made in 1986
Surf Ninjas

Rad was one of my best movies in the late 80s🤔
Agreed!!!!
Mine too. Is it me or they totally bashed Rad? Lol well look at that them lol Everyone except the AVGN, don't look like if they ever rode a bike
How have you not reviewed the 90s classic airborne. That is prime fodder🤣
I agree it's cheesy, but it's also totally awesome! When I was 7-9 years old, I probably rented this movie 200 times... I injured myself many times attempting to emulate the tricks performed in RAD... I saved for years to buy a Haro because of this movie! I liked BMX before RAD hit, but this movie made my love for BMX eternal, because it's woven into the fabric of my childhood.
Damn this movie was a HUGE part of my childhood! They need to bring Hell Track back!!!
The did a couple of months ago. An exact replica!
Rad is great, but not as sweet as Airborne.

That movie is awesome
Next review: "Gleaming the Cube"
State of the art database software. 💓
Which version of DOS might it be running on?
@@theharbingerofconflation I think is Basic
You can't really tell what it's written in but I doubt it runs solely on an interpreter as this is at least an 8080 and not James's C64. I think either MS-DOS, CP/M or it's just a screenshot xD
I LOVE this movie. Great soundtrack!! "Getting ready to break the ice!!"
“Hulk Hogan eat your heart out!”
SEND ME AN ANGEL was also used in the Jason Bateman movie Teen Wolf Too (1987)
I would say something about the large guy saying he didn't know much about BMX growing up in the 80s... and point out an obvious possible reason... but nah.
That said growing up in the 80s while I didn't know a lot about the "pro" scene of things, I did know a good amount about the bikes because I road them everywhere as a kid... back when you could do that it seems.
Yeah because you can't do it now it's illegal.
Also see 'The Dirt Bike Kid' (which came out around the same time as Rad). There's 'Gleaming the Cube' and 'Thrashin' if you want 80's skateboarding movies. I remember the 80's and early 90's being big on skiing movies too.
I love this "fuck it, put the camera there I guess" style of blocking a scene in the opening skits. Especially how half the time the people talking aren't even completely in frame, or someone with their back to the camera is standing right in front of them. Very original.
James, you're my favorite CZcamsr, you have inspired me to choose film as my career. Thank you, man, really.
Holy beef...
Wow. Get off his nuts
Ive met James 4 times! He’s the nicest, coolest, genuine guy. He’s been a huge inspiration in my life too
my abode is adorned with photos of the good Rolfe himself
He is a bit of the gold-standard as far as CZcamsrs go. I agree.
You HAVE to watch the 80's skateboard movie THRASHIN' if you haven't! It has so many big/cult actors and a live performance by Red Hot Chilli Peppers!
Seems like a lot of the points these guys “came up with” were lifted directly from The How Did This get made podcast from a few months ago on Rad. Same thing with the Surf Ninjas review.
Skateboard movie - Gleaming the Cube with 1989 Christian Slater
Rlloerblade movie - Prayer of the Rollerboys with 1990 Corey Haim
Sorry, I'm stopping this video to watch Rad. Never seen that, really want to see it now.
I discovered this movie in the 80's, along with The Dirt Bike Kid. Love them both and still watch them today. Yes, they're cheesy but it's good cheese, in my opinion. Oh, and Winners take all. Another good one.
Winners Take All! No one ever brings that up. All those pop culture movies of the 80s are so awesome. Thrashin, Gleaming The Cube, Dirt Bike Kid.
Thanks for mentioning the Dirt Bike Kid. I'd forgotten about that movie.
Omg, dirt bike kid!!!!! I used to love this as a kid and somehow forgot about this. I'm going to go watch right now! Thanks !!
@@cabaldwin3 You're welcome. I think I'll watch it after while too.
I watched all those as a kid and would watch them over and over. Loved those movies. I also watched stand by me a lot as well.
I LOVED this movie as a kid!!! It was more about seeing the tricks and jumps then running out and trying it on your BMX. Bitd before the internet you had to rely on movies like this to learn something new or know that it was possible to do it.
Yeah the 80's had BMX Bandits, Rad, and Pee-wee's Big Adventure for BMX. Also, Rad has Send Me an Angel which was in The Wizard also a classic.
Talia Shire's husband at the time, Jack Schwartzman, owned the company (Taliafilm) that produced Rad.
Talia produced it with him uncredited. I think her "Rocky IV" salary went into this. I know her salary for "Rocky III" went into "Never Say Never Again."
I have to put this suggestion in caps, but please do THE GUYVER review!!
The sequel wasn’t as fun but it didn’t suck. Oh well. Stryker was the best. Dynomite...
I was born in 79 so I remember this movie being a pretty big deal growing up (even though I never saw it) and skate boarding was pretty popular in the 80's far as i remember

It’s great 80’d nostalgia..that I saw 5 years ago and loved. Go watch Rug Rats the movie, if you don’t like it.
I love spending Friday afternoons at the Cinamassacre Video Store
Every kid wanted a BMX bike in the 80's to ride around and get permanent scars on their elbows and knees attempting tricks. (We didn't need no pads back then!) We used the trick pegs on the rear and front axles to haul passengers. All one had was solid plastic frame wheel rims and front and back hand brakes along with being able to spin the handlebars 360 degrees. I got a cheap Huffy but hey I was still happy and must have put a thousand miles on the thing. Everyone rode bikes back in the day-kinda sad to see not many kids doing it or when they do their parents make them put motocross armor on. We learned how to ride by realizing the more we crashed, the more painful the learning experience would be.
Everyone with a skateboard and boombox (that took 6 or 8 'D' batteries) would play 'Send Me An Angel' while skateboarding in the park.
James Robert I was part of that bike culture, but still put my kids in helmets. Saved my daughter's life when she clipped a curb following me down a hill. I kept the cracked helmet for years as a reminder. Not a lot you can learn if your brains are splattered across a sidewalk.
I so LOVE this entire series of reviewing movies. That intro never gets old!
I remember BMX magazine being my go to at the library. I had a bunch of skateboarding shirts. However, I nether skated or rode bmx. It was so cool, but nobody I knew did ether. I also lived in Southern Oregon so it was not a dense urban environment in th 80s. Cheers!
thunder in your heart was opening song in TURBO KID as well and fits perfectly. TURBO KID is awesome
I was going to say Rad did finally get a blue ray release but they just remastered it to 4K and you can buy it in Apple TV. Maybe one day they will give us what the people want.
RAD is a movie you really needed to see as a kid, during the time when a "trick bike" was all you needed in life. ONly during this time did the movie capture you and suck you in. Back when you and your friends would steal some wood from dad, build a ramp and get hurt ramping your bike in the street. If you aren't an 80s kid, you prolly won't get this movie. James should be old enough to get this movie. I guess he was just too into movies and missed the BMX days
You guys neeed to do Thrashin now
You kinda had to see this movie during its era. It was perfect for its time. I love it, even though i know it is super cheesey and full of cliches. The music was awesome esp thunder in your heart and send me an angel.
I had a GT Haro BMX growing up in the 80's. BMX was it back then.
I found an HDnet rip floating around about 12 years ago that I downloaded. I was so excited to have that instead of a vhs or laserdisc rip.
