How to Paint Stormcast Eternals: Stormdrake Guard! In this Artis Opus Tutorial we're bringing out some brand-new drybrushing techniques, for the first time! We're going to show you how to achieve a unique result, which you can only get using (at least some) drybrushing!

I think my favorite part of your tutorial is just how much care you took for this beautiful model. It's easy for me to want to paint loads of armies and forget to take the time to put in the care that made this model turn out absolutely incredible. Great work, inspiring work.
The way you showed the primary shade with two branches to reach the primary highlight really help kind of build a framework for putting more color into a piece cohesively!

Yes! That'd look perfect, you can always tint in any direction you wish with the colour of the contrast used in the final step: We used Nuln + Leviadon Blue, but you could tint purple, green, etc, whatever suits your scheme.
It's just a little nuance, but it makes a big difference, especially repeated across an army!

Great tutorial, really liked seeing the project start to finish with the longer video format and would be great if you do these kind of videos for other big models/centerpieces like Nagash/Allarielle/chaos things etc. Personally would love to see a Sylvaneth vid like this as im starting a Series D treeboi army tomorrow :D This was well worth the wait, really glad to see you guys back making vids ^^

Very very good tutorial great to see. You mentioned a hybrid approach of airbrush and dry brushing, would love to see that as I adore the more natural approaches and really donât like traditional wavy metal edge highlighting.
Donât be afraid to push your products, I love your paint shaker you could have put 5 seconds in when you were talking about shaking paint we would have been fine!
Lastly, desperate to see these techniques of different scale armour, really keen on Aeronautica which loves a dry brush and Titanicus which really needs it for the metals - cheers!

The different scale is interesting, traditionally we don't get a huge amount of interest when we veer away from standard GW (with the exception being Star Wars Legion), but it's maybe worth a test at some point.
The Hybrid approach is something we'll definitely see more of, particularly if I do another speed paint army project, which I will at some point this year for sure!

Great work! Between the flaming sword and the colour of the armour, I would love to see some more dramatic shadows on the dragon too.
Really enjoyed the video, and will definitely be coming back to review and try out the OSL technique very soon! My personal preference would be for you to do pretty much exactly the same thing, but split into three videos - one wings/scales, one black armour, one OSL and wrap up - purely so I could more easily find the bits that I want to refer back to - but will keep watching whichever way you go!

Awesome tutorial Byron, thanks very much for taking the time to make it. I think the longer format definitely works for bigger centrepiece models, and it's great to see things that you're learning as well.
This one's particularly relevent to me - just finished building Krondys today so really looking forward to painting him. I do have a bit of a dilemma though - can't decide whether to go with a full drybrush technique like yours, or the contrast+ method from Warhipster (which also looks awesome). Think I might start with a couple of contrast base coats and initial shading then drybrush the lighter areas over that - do you think that would work?

I am just a beginner and never tried matt paints like Kimera, for example, for dry brushing...usually Abbadon black, which is a bit shiny itself. I'll test it. I have a sets of Kimera colors. its so interesting to see how things go with this hobby!!! for sure this fluffyness you described could be used in some of the cases, but I need to see the difference in the "real life". Thanks once again for your experience sharing))) Looking forward for every new video and stuff you guys publish, manifacture đ

Sorry double edit, for requests - any tips for getting decent blending on flat panels? I've seen the rhino tutorial you did but any new advice would be great - planning a mek gun and dakkajet with the brushes when they arrive

The bullet points were a great addition to the video. The only thing to keep in mind is that White on White makes it hard to read/notice.
Oh good point. I liked the paint prompts but maybe they'd pop more over a coloured rectangular or something similar.

Dragons with leather/skin based wings have fingers similar to bats(though bats don't have an 'elbow spur'). Pinions would be more accurate for feather winged dragons.

Glad that you are uploading again âŁïž any chance of doing a nebula in the future in your style ? Would love to paint it on some vehicles but couldnât find a good guide. With capes I do kind of a stipple and wet blend over it. Not perfekt but canât see that working on vehicles.

@@ArtisOpus saw a German streamer once stipple 3 different shades of a color all over a plane. f.e. he started with a dark blue on the left wing and stippled in a brighter blue and a little light blue in that. For the main body he used purple and transitioned to red/orange on the other wing. Then he used shades to blend it together and just shot some white stars over it with a tooth brush. Took 20 minutes for the hole plane. Looked decent for the amount of effort.
But I am sure if someone could show me a way for this to look good it is you đ hope you find the idea interesting.
And there is nothing comparable on CZcams. Already looked for it đ
Question for you: how do you clean the dry brush after each colour change (dip into water like normal brush?) and what is the best way to keep them maintained and clean. Thanks again for your lovely tutorials, they help many beginners out there like me..

#1 - *Never* dip into water unless you are doing a full clean, this never happens in painting.
I use our brush soap, and paint purger and brush preserver.
The most important thing though is to use the dampening pad, you can see me using it constantly here, and I even cover this during the dragon video.

I'm not even painting a dragon and I got some help: I'm merrily painting a raven and thinking "what colour should I use to drybrush some highlights onto the feathers?" and you said "dark reaper". *lightbulb moment*

Just found your channel. Awesome dry brushing tutorial! Few questions, what type of palette you using and how is your paints not drying out? If I donât use a wet palette my paints just dry out in a few minutes.

I also don't dilute the paint on there with water, water increases evaporation, and therefore speeds up drying time, you'll notice that my water comes in only via the dampening pad from series D set: store.artis-opus.com/products/series-d-drybrush-set-deluxe-5-slot
Can you do a kraken themed Exocrine, Mawloc, or even a series of hormagaunts to dry brush?
"Abaddon Black is a weaker black..."
Maybe in terms of it's initial coverage, but not in it's finish. It dries satin, so when used as the rim of the base, it looks more complete. It is also very durable once on and isn't prone to rubbing or chipping off like the matte blacks are. While I prefer matte blacks for most of my general painting, Abaddon is by far the best at concluding the rim of a base or plinth.

That gold looks great, but is the cryptek gloss essential to the end product? Just asking because I don't own that particular shade. Also would you do the gold in a different way if you were going for a different armour colour, for example with silver like the Hallowed Knights scheme.
Hey dude, it's not, it's mainly the gloss part that's important, to keep the shine :)

did you prime the wings with the same black you used for the base coat? and if so, why the emphasis on not using a matte black primer please?
Also, i'd like to paint my dragons a slightly darker blue on the outside and a slightly lighter cream on the inside wings, do you think i can just swap the paints used accordingly?

Hey dude, of course, and matte absorbs paint too much, promoting chalky drybrushing.
Absolutely, just avoid matte paints again for those steps, and you will be fine! (He works)
As a note, the matte paints are ok introduced in final stages, just not in the main sections.
When using stipling the way you do in your videos for putting down base coats and such, how much are you water down the paint?
For the bases it's essentially 1-2 drops from the back of whatever size brush you use, rather than the normal one đ
How does your paint not dry completely out on that Matt? Mine would be dry in like5 mins
Largely because it isn't all mixed at once, you leave the blobs thick and undiluted (they don't evaporate as fast undiluted) and then pull from them to make your mixes, it's a bit more like traditional painting :)
You mentioned it being important you prime it with a primer that does not dry matte, important enough to emphasize that twice. But you never mentioned why, could you enlighten me? As I prime exclusively with Badger Stynylrez rez, which dries super matte.
It's too absorbent, it encourages the 'chalky' paintjob that we do our best to avoid. Think sponge Vs glass

Hey dude, it's too absorbent, it just makes following steps hard work, when they don't need to be.
You can work with it, but given the choice I would avoid it where possible, you just have to go more slowly and carefully.
You could always use a wash over it, if for some reason you only had a black.

38:30 is it ok to take the brush with a color straight to the pot of another color? I thought that is forbidden as it mixes the color in the pot. New painter here, trying to learn.
Hey bud, honestly I don't think it matters if there's minimal mixing. It's a typically overemphasised part of our hobby, other parts are much more important like 'Are my highlights in the right place' - you'll benefit more from worrying about that by a long way!
I have a simple question, which might be trivial. How do you clean your palette when you are done?
He doesn't. After a while he sprays over it. (Black to look better on camera) you can actually see some black "lumps" from previous use.

Hey dude, it isn't this, as much as it will dry out your paint and raise the chance of things looking 'fluffy' (oldschool 'dry' drybrushing and stippling), you can work around it, but it's easier to keep stuff smooth and higher quality all over if you don't use heavy matte!
What do you call that pad you use to get the excess for dry brushing off ? And what does the little pot do ? Iâm still a novice at painting
It's our dampening pad buddy, it releases a small and predictable amount of moisture into your brush, it's a game-changer for keeping things smooth in my style.

Did you apply Black Primer with an airbrush? or did you also hand-brush/stipple it on?
From a can normally buddy, sometimes I will quickly go over the model and fill gaps, but generally speaking I always use a can first.

Hey dude, nope! We upgraded recording equipment half way through the painting process though, the old set up washed them out a little. (If that's what made you ask).

Absolutely! It's very well suited to it, as is stippling :)
Wow those look tiny I've not held a Stormcast are they smaller scale than 40k?
Yes/no. Same scale, but the chunkier ones are on foot.
On the plus side they are all armour of the same colour, or straps/weapon, so painting is super enjoyable.
