Worked in Campbell Barracks (HQ, USAEUR) from 62-64 and enjoyed my stay in Heidelberg. I got the opportunity to travel around Europe and make some good friends.

Was stationed there for Desert Strom and the Join Endeavor.
Never thought they would have closed it.
It was literally the BEST DUTY I ever had.

I worked there from 1969 through 1973 in the 65th DPU (later USAEUR AND 7TH Army AG). I lived in Patton Barracks first and later at Patrick Henry Village. It really saddened me when I read we were returning these properties to Germany. These were the happiest, most exciting times of my life. I met great people and got to travel extensively. Time marches on, though.

I was born and raised in Heidelberg and went to school _(IGH)_ between the Nachrichtenkaseren _(Hospital)_ and the Campbell barracks/Mark-Twain-Vilage.
I really miss the Americans GI's and our American friends. Going to the commissary and the PX store was always a highlight.
Our friends took us to the Ramstein Air Base and KMCC mall. It was really huge and cool, especially the food court. But it just wasn't the same as Heidelberg.
I really didn't understand the move _(mostly to Wiesbaden),_ since we've been the European headquarter for such a long time.
Heidelberg was just the perfect place, I think.
Most GI's preferred Heidelberg over any other US base and we had such a long established friendship over the decades.
Sure they had to close many installations, since the cold war is over but why out of all the Army bases in Baden-Württemberg and Rheinland-Pfalz, did they close Heidelberg/Mannheim?

In Mannheim they actually got a prison too.
It's shown in _"The A-Team"_ movie, were they free Murdock from there.

There was some political debates about the prison. If it's also used for torture etc.

Was also at the 65th DPU, 3/68-9/69. Worked in the vault, among other places. Lived off post for last year or so. Had the rare opportunity to revisit in 1995, and then again with my son in 2012. Beautiful city. Some wild times.

Many memories of my time stationed in Heidelberg from 1978-81. Sad in a way that the Campell/Patton facilities were closed, but I guess that at some point it was bound to happen. But as I said in comments to other related videos, I will never forget my time in Hbg nor especially the unique people I served with there.

My dad was a supply sargeant at the Army base in Heidelberg in 1959. I was 12 years old then and my family lived in base housing. Our address was 2 B Alamo Circle. You can look that address up on Google Earth and see the 3 story apartment buildings we lived in. They are still there but every building is boarded up and there is not a single car in the parking lots. I have lots of fond memories from our stay in Heidelberg. When the Soviet Union fell, there was little need to keep America's military bases occupied. That is a part of U.S. history that is gone with the wind.
