The Canon 28-70 f/2 RF Lens
#canon28-70 #RFlenses #canonreview - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I own the RF 24-105mm f/4 and rented the 28-70 f/2. I took similar shots with both and the sharpness from the RF 28-70mm f/2.0 is simply incredible and definitely surpasses the kit lens. I would buy it, but the price is just too high during this damn pandemic and while things are still somewhat uncertain (economically) in the US 😫
I feel ya!
Mine arrived a couple days ago. I returned my RF 50 F1.2 L and RF 24-70 F2.8 L to fund it. No regrets. I love this fat chunky!
I bought the 28-70mm last month, and it is a keeper! It works great in low light, and is a good replacement for your 24-105mm kit lense. The 28-70mm and the R5 is a match mate in heaven. The combination is expensive, but worth it.
Your content just keep getting better and better! Thanks Teppo.

Am I the only one blown away by that intro? I thought that was shot on RS2 and I was like “man that is smooth I need one of those” but it was HANDHELD on a lens without IS? Teppo HOW???
Ninja walk and warp stabilizer 😂😂😂
same here, I love this lens. Together with the RF 70-200 2.8 just unbeatable for Family, wedding and Coupleshoots. Awesome shoots in this Video.
Tldr? With the R5, yes it really is that good. It’s like having 4 primes in one lens which are now stabilized with the R5. Super versatile - one lens, one body, I love mine. Thanks for your video, wonderful footage!
Great overview of this incredible lens! Those shots were superb. I just sold 3 older-ish EF lenses (since I have the RF versions) and was ready to pull the trigger BUT all retailers, including Canon USA, has it on backorder! I will patiently wait for the next batch!
That was hella beast, man!
you make me so happy to watch man!
Haha thats awesome man!
What a combination! Super intro too! Sadly I only used this combo for a celebration and yet to get round to finishing up the content but the 1st test shot JF the kids at f2 even wide blew me away. Lack of IS too is a non issue with my short time with it doing video and stills
Neat and clean review, thumb up and i am going to grab one!
🙌🙌🙌
Great piece of Kit I Have the Cheaper RF 35 and RF 85 F 2.0 prime on top of my other ones but this looks like an awesome one stop lens have to see if Santa 🎅 will be nice this year !
Nice Ive heard there great lenses too!
Hello Teppo! Do you find needing a battery grip to make this setup feel more balanced?
Loving the videos!
the intro was amazing man and the music woww keep it Teppo
Thanks Melvin!
@@TeppoHaapoja you and your
brother Matti are super amazing with cameras
Looks like a beast of a lens!!👌🏼
Its been fantastic!
That intro was just epic 🔥🔥
Thanks!
Good review. Didn’t talk about the image quality. I use primes that look different. 85 1.2, 135 f2, 8mm fisheye. The 28-70 has a unique look generally only found in certain prime lenses. This makes my wedding photos pop. All the other reasons provided are extra. Now I rarely use my 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm primes I use this lens. Sold my 24-70 and only use the 24-105 for walk around lens.
It took me weeks to finally track down an available lens earlier this summer, but it's so worth it. I'm going to Utah in a week and I intend to only take the 15-35, the 28-70 and the 100-500 RF lenses. That'll cover every possible need I have between landscapes and hopefully some wildlife.
Great video Teppo! Can I ask, how is the continuous autofocus for video? Feel like some of the first phase lenses (50mm 1.2) were not nearly as good as the RF 15-35 and 24-70... how does this compare?
Love your videos Teppo! Will you be getting the Canon C70?
I havent thought about it!
Thank you for this
🙌🙌🙌
This Lens is ridiculous! I Filmed a whole Wedding with it and it was awesome. But after that i had sore muscles :D
And as i thought before with the IBIS of the R5 and R6 this is realy a beast.
Awesome Intro btw;-)
Nice Dominik!
That lens is a jack of all trades. Very nice!
Very true!
Yes it’s that good soo soo good
I rented this lens and fell soooo in love!! I’m saving to buy it!!!
Nice man!
Hey! Rad content! Do you have a link to the wedding you shot on the r5 with 28-70 f2? Would love to see it in action for wedding videography
I got the RF 24-70 f2.8 and im in Love..... but the 28-70 Looks Sweet!
Really appreciate your point of view. Thank you very much.
Thanks for subscribing & being here!
Man that’s a solid lens 💪🏽
Indeed! Ive been impressed.
I currently use two R6s with 28-70 and 70-200 for hybrid weddings and love it! Great video!
Oh snap, the 70-200 RF? Quite the setup
Indeed it is, my wife second shoots for me and uses the RP with the RF 24-70 F2.8. We are very new to youtube, weddings, photography and videography in general, and very much appreciate you sharing your experience. CZcams really has changed the way we learn as a species forever, hyper evolution mode. I’ve also humbly started a similar channel. I am currently specializing it in hybrid wedding coverage and the equipment and techniques related! Thanks for the inspiration.
First, love the song, I've used it in one of my videos as well. And the airbnb were you stayed was incredible! Second, the lens is really impressive, although a bit pricey. But thinking that with one lens you can do so much, it's like an all-in-one lens, so it doesn't see that expensive in the end
The airbnb was epic for sure!
i love this lens, mostly for the size and the f2
F2 is fantastic
I'm almost thinking of switching to Canon now after watching this vid ^^! Great review!
Thanks Ruben!
Awesome video!!! I love this lens and while the price is a bit hefty, the logic of it replacing several primes makes that OK!! Also the size/weight is really not an issue at all!! Yes, less gear = happy Photog!!!
Exactly! Thanks Mario!
I found Matti's brother. Wow. And he is also photographer and videographer. That's amazing. I'm definitely subscribing
Welcome bro! Thanks for your kind words.
Hi Teppo thanks for this review. What ND Filter can you recommend for this? The filter thread looks huge 🤣😊
I just purchased this lens and I’m surprised how sharp it is at f2 and f2.2. As an event photographer who works six days and nights per week I’m very happy with being able to shoot this wide open without having to switch to my nifty 50 ef. Once you get used to the weight is smooth sailing. I was a Lil timid about buying it due to the price but then I thought well it’s about $800 more than the rf 24-70 and I had enough for that at the time but after renting it first and seeing how impressive it was I decided to bite the bullet and set aside an extra $800. And It has already paid for itself about a month in. No regrets about the purchase. My coworkers are drooling over my shots I take.
Nice man!
I LOVE The size actually. I like a little more heft, especially when shooting video handheld.
And compared with other lenses as sharp, having that kind of focal range, at f2… I think the price is fair.
I have been shooting with the 28-70 f2.0 for the past year and it has been absolutely incredible.
Is it practical to take on holidays? This is my dilemma now that I have the R5
I’m so used to the weight and size now that I don’t think about it at all so I would totally take it on a vacation. Check out my IG at @jessbaumung to see some of my photos.
I’ve been waiting for a review like this from you Tepppo! To be completely honest you’ve become one of my all time favorite photographers. Is it possible to DM you through Instagram? I have a question regarding your workshop.
Thanks Jose!
Sure feel free to msg me.
I want to see this lense on the new Canon C70. Great video!
That’d be an interesting setup for sure!
Yep, very versatile, with the constant f2.0, but the 85mm 1.2, i love this lens to bits, so sharp, even at f1.2.
I just find 1.2 is too shallow for me
@@TeppoHaapoja i suppose it is because in general i am a big fan of that focal length and i shoot cars, so just love it!
That Broll is crazy. Who needs a gimbal anymore?!
Haha very true! Thanks Christiano.
own this lens, if the optical formula included puffs of magic and tears of unicorns, it would be fully acceptable. its THAT good of a Len. decided to get this one instead of the 24-70 for my trinity, and never looked back. but I did keep my kit 24-105 as an everyday lens, because the 28--70 is just too heavy and unworkable for a "daily driver."
Hey Teppo, awesome video! I have the RF 24-105mm and the RF 70-200mm. The 24-105mm is such a great all-rounder lens and has IS. Also I'm using the R6. Is the 28-70mm really good enough to replace something like the RF 24-105mm for video? (I'm just worried about losing IS and that little bit of extra length for video projects). However, I've already been thinking about getting the 28-70mm for photography, but if I didn't need the 24-105mm I could probably sell it or trade it in to get the 28-70mm to save some money... Such a dilemma!
-Brent
Hope to afford this lens in the future 🙌🏽
Definitely worth it!
Good work Teppo! What’s your experience on lacking IS for video shoot comparing to RF 24-70? (I have a R6+RF 15-35, have been wondering which one to get next, the 24-70 or 28-70)
I find the IBIS compensates for lack of IS
Just look at the intro. Hand held! Pretty amazing if you have a steady hand.
Don’t know nobody with a R5. I really need no friends 😂🤣🤣
One lens to rule them all. 😂 I love it.
You got me, I’ll get that lens! In a year or so when I save money enough
Highly suggest it
For the price of this lens you can buy a Sony a 7R iii 45mp camera with the tamron 28-70 lens way better value not to mention very similar results to the R5. Sony is more budget smaller compact travel friendly than canon crippled hammer cameras.
You might want to consider adding the grip. It really helps the weight/balance.
Good tip!
It's actually the second lens to have f2 as a zoom. Sigma did it first one but it was only 24-35 f2
I just invested in Nikon Z 24-70/2.8 S. I've never been big fan of that standard zoom lens on DSLR. Hopefully I'll like it on mirrorless body.
BTW, with that size, weight and price I think I'm happier with my f2.8 Nikkor. I bought it on sale for 2000 USD.
Are You using filter uv/protector and if so which one? With Marumi you cant add lens Hood.
I'd love to get that for my R6 ... maybe next year.
Its a good combo for sure!
R5 + 28-70mm is the ONLY camera lens combo anyone really needs.... i also use the 137L and theSigma 58 1.4 but man.... the 28-70 is amazing.
I had my doubts, then I tried it, and now I own it. Being able to shoot at f/2 on a zoom is incredible for someone like me who shoots live theatre in dark venues. It's a whole two stops of light compared to my 24-105mm f/4 which makes the difference between getting a usable shot at high ISO.
Can you explain something to me? If I put this lens on an R6, will I be able to set my aperture at f/2.8, f/4 etc..?
@@royaltykidstv Yes, you can use any aperture until f/22 which is the minimum.
@@Skux720 so the f/22 is coming from the lens correct?
And what does continuous f/2 mean?
@@royaltykidstv Yes f/22 is the size of the lens opening. The range on this lens is f/2 to f/22.
'Continuous' means that the lens can stay at f/2 throughout its zoom range. Other cheaper lenses will have a smaller aperture when zoomed in.
@@Skux720 Wow I see, thank you so much, I will purchase this lens towards the end of this yr.
Thanks for the review. One question:: Can I consider this for EOS RP? Or do you need a bigger body?
It might be a bit uneven distribution
Expensive but brilliant lens
Very true! But if it replaces all your lenses then its not too bad
Where did you buy the parasol for this lens? I cannot find it 😭 (case protector)
Do you feel the lack of the 24mm or do you think 28mm is wide enough?
I own that lens for 1 month now... I fought with myself for 2 years. I told me that this is too big, too heavy and too expensive... Yes it is but this is so good. And I do not talk about the sharpness.but about the overall quality and polyvalence ! I LOST 2 YEARS !!! This is the lens for any reportages, events, weddings and more.
Do you use a UV/protector?
@@thomasbednarowski1651 No. But I bought one in case I need to protect the lens.
@@bangtao6593 I got a "protector" (a glas without any UV coating or other sorts of coating the may impact the image). UV is usually not required with such cameras as both the sensor and usually the lense already have more then enough coating except if you you are in the mountains where the default coating may not be enough.
@@Seitenwerk I know it. I only replied to the question: do I use a UV/protector ? I said NO. I only bought a protector in case I need to protect the lens. Exemple: when there can have some small peebles projections.
Well for more than the price of the R6 I would hope it is a stud 🤣🤣🤣 But for real the RF has realy changed the game.
HA very true!
Do you have a Variable ND for your 28-70 f2? If so what brand.
I own this lens and no regrets here
Nice Andrew, do you use it more for photo or video?
On the gimbal part.. in the start of.the video. I noticed that the movement is always from left to right.. this is common with many creators.. myself I automaticli pan always same.. have to do more gimbal work and practice . Just something I noticed. Great video and great content!
He says in the video that everything was hand held.
I love mine. I’m shooting weddings an rarely switching lenses. It’s insane. And for those that complain about the price(totally agree with you), it’s 3 prime lenses in one. How much would a 35, 50, and 85 primes cost combined?
way more than the 28-70 and would probably weigh (haha pun) more as well when bringing 3 diff primes.
@@carlestrada Yeah, it's a win win win?
same price if u buy all these lenses used
How does this do for astrophotography?
Now I need the 28-70 after buying the RF 70-200.. 😛
The 28-70 has completely replaced the 24-70 for me, the f2 makes a huge difference and the lens has a really nice look
So true!
you happen to compare it with the RF 24 70 2.8? I use that one! It's fun too, but I don't know, the specialness of that 2870 beast is tempting!
I like having the f2.0!
Awesome intro, but I felt like you left me hanging for the beat to drop lol great video!!
Haha sorry bro!
Impressive handheld Mr. Happy man.
Are there really any difference between this and the canon RF 24-70 f2.8 ?
Unless you are an animal photographer 😂😂😂 its called wild life photographer. love the video 👍👍👍
Hey Teppo. Love your content but isn’t the intro the same as the one from your self-portrait photography video? 🤔🤭🤫😄
😂😂😂
If I think about it. I just got the Tamron wide lens g2 for £650, I’m getting the 100macro which I need. I’m getting 70 - 200 - £1000 and 24 - 70 for £600.
I could replace the wide and the 24-70 but I would miss the wider 15mm if needed and would still need an extra £1000 to buy this lens.
I actually think this lens is not worth the purchase as it only just replaces my 24 - 70. But I guess it would be worth it for a prime shooter if it gets the quality of a prime lens. But I’m happy with my 100 which also gives me macro at F2.8.
And even if I get an EF 85 1.2 - would still be a cheaper setup.
I cannot see the sense of this lens except if it can compete with the quality of prime lenses and I would doubt that very much. If this lens means you do not have to buy primes - then this will be the best lens on planet earth.
That was thinking aloud and coming to a conclusion. 😂😂😂😳😳😳😳
I had a chance to try it, great lens but damn I miss image stabilization 😑 and it's heavy af 😅
Luckily R5’s IBIS is pretty solid
@@TeppoHaapoja agree 😉
I have this lens. Pretty much use it 95% of the time. The other 5% I'm still waiting for Canon to release a 24mm F1.2.
24mm 1.2 would be great!
What are you going to do with the 95mm filter thread for video? No real good VND for that yet.
B+w have a great VND for95mm
Man the more boca the better
I wish Sony makes one soon 😬
One lens to rule them all. A shame you cannot marry your lens😂
My concern is the size, the attention u will bring especially at weddings, my couples love how I blend into the crowd using small light weight Fuji X series primes.
Now Fuji has released their autofocus protocols to Sigma and Tamron, I'm hoping for an x mount 18-35 1.8 zoom. Right now its available with the fringer ef-fx adaptor, but it gets a bit big.
@@robmcd I hope so, I’m selling my 18-35mm sigma, I tried using it via the fringer pro 2 on a wedding but about 1 out 3 images where soft out off focus, it’s been collecting dust ever since.
Can people please stop talking about the Fuji - that is a crop sensor baby camera. But if you love it - good for you. But I’m like what is the relevance of a Fuji in this day and age😂😂😂 Sorry I have an A6100 that is better than the Fuji. I just can’t take it seriously. Sorry.
@@m77ast should we stop talking about full frame as well? Thats also a crop compared to medium format. Sorry I don’t see your point? There all cameras used professionally.
@@eliaspap8708 not the same thing. If this camera was a crop sensor camera - then it would be worth mentioning the Fuji. If it was a medium format camera it will be worth mentioning the Hassleblad. However you Fuji users just like to mention your tiny crop Fuji’s at every opportunity. In my opinion it’s not even worth considering for pro photography work. You cannot blur the background, your available lenses are not top level and you are constantly trying to figure out your crop ratio. The limitations are way too much for pro level work. Not even worth talking about.
It’s like going into a warzone with a pistol while others are carrying sub machine guns. It makes no sense. Actually it’s much better than a pistol but you get my logic.
I call it the Monster. I skiped the 24-70 f2.8 and went for that one. The RF 24-105 is perfect for general events (much, much better than the EF version), when the $$ is not worth risking 3 000$, and the Monster is a dream for cover shoots, portraits, etc.
🙌🙌🙌
I wish there would be 24-70 f/1.2 or better yet 16-200 f/1.2 😁
I was comparing the 24-70 f-2.8 vs the 28/70 f-2.0 and the two main differences are that the 28-70 does Not have Image stabilization and the 24-70 does have and the second is the weigh with the 24-70 being 1.98LB and the 28-70 is about 3.15 LB.
I think no IS is a thing that has me deciding on whether I should spend the extra $700USD, what do you guys think??
R5/R6 have IBIS. Works with lens with or without IS. ;)
@@synikster yeah I know but it’s always better if both have IS.
You really sound like your brother, so funny if you close your eyes.
Hahaha were fam :)
I really don't think the price out of range for this lense. I don't even feel it's high. This is a one of a kind lens, even more it delivers superior image quality AND has a wonderful character to the images. Developing that lens will havecost Canon a shitload of money. If Canon would undersell it, they would screw themselves and they would actually screw the whole market.
I am pretty sure if Zeiss would sell exactly this lens and would charge 4999$ for it, no one would complain since it's so exclusive. Maybe Canon is charging not ENOUGH :D
Can gimbal handle this beast?
Not sure!
Yes! Used it on a Ronin S, no problem at all🤩 I will post the video on YT soon. But you can check it out on my IG if you want. instagram.com/p/CIMKkiwJH6I7S7kcT4xpt4vWGicfdP41RA-sTM0/?igshid=l3vxqtizc51i
@@toreiversen3389 thanks!
Hoping 3rd party like Sigma can make their own version 😭
That would be awesome!
Yeah! A sigma EF mount at 1.8 coz
24 to 70
Would be gr8
at some point canon is going to have to drop the price of these lenses.. I am no cheap person, but $3000+ for one lens is out of this world...
Fax
Doubt it.
Yes it seems like a sweet sweet lens, but I would argue that for the size weight and price the RF 24-70mm is a way better option esp since it has IS built into the RF version. I think it's awesome that Canon added IS to that lens and paired with an IS body like the R5/6 it's way more versatile than the 28-70, saves you $$ and would be better for video. I also don't think this lens could replace an 85mm 1.2/1.4.
with the R5 and R6, the IS built in is less important, but remember 2.8 to 2 is a FULL STOP of lights, that's literally the difference between 10,000 ISO and 5,000 ISO. at lower ISO's its not as big of a deal, but where this one shines, in low light zoom needs such as theater and studio shooting, where I live,, its literally the difference between a lot of noise and mediocre picture, and no noise and rear studio blown up shot. it really is that good of a lens. but its not an everyday lens, that's for sure...
For events and documentaries you have a great advantage at f2. With flash I would agree with you. You also get a different look that separates you from competitors if you make money with your gear. Being different will help you get jobs.
Yep it wont replace 85mm f1.2
@@dezanto I would almost say it would be better to get the 85mm 1.4 IS EF lens and adapt it to the R that way it has some sort of IS and would great for video too
how did he get rights to Odezsa?
I’m lost, so this lens can’t do f/4-f/16?
Why not the RF 24-70 2.8, smaller and cheaper and pretty fast?
F2.8 my friend, having f2.0 is nice!
Do you think 28 is wide enough to filming wedding?🙌
Definitely
Another negative for me is the 95mm thread. Most filter companies don't make this size ;/
Why not use step up/down rings?
Urth - seriously good filters
Go big or go home. The best RF lens
Thats the way to go!
