A modern clothes iron can have hundreds of electronic components that have to be inspected by microscope. It has multiple moving parts, is made out of a lightweight materials in a modular design. Compare that to an old iron, which was typically just that; a single lump of cast iron shaped to have a smooth surface and a handle.
The modern iron has far superior energy efficiency, safety, usability, and efficiency. The only question is where to draw the line between durability and all the other factors.
