This is how his concerts are. It's wild. My girl dragged me to his show and I thought it was going to be some lovey-dovey crap. Within 5 minutes I was like where is his band? Then I realized he was looping everything and making the beats all live himself. Background vocals, harmony, drums, guitar, and he had a new fan by the 15-minute mark! I've seen him 3 times now and he is better every time!

He wrote this song before he was famius. Record labels kept rejecting him. He was gigging and gigging - 365 gigs a year. Then he wrote Collaborations 5 Project Ep with Devlin, Wretch, Mikil Pane, JME... He got attention of Elton John and soon he got signed by Atlantic Records. He started to write this song when he was 15 and everywhere he went to ha e a gig he added a lyric or two. He dropped out of school to go to London to pursue his dreams to be a musician and he was literally couch surfing there. He also sold his CDs after his gigs. This song is 14 years old.

Ed Sheeran once said in an interview, and it is the sort of thing written about in the book 'Outliers', that to attain mastery you need minimum 10000 hours under your belt. He has written so much material with 90% of it in the bin, but because of that when he writes he can call on those old bits and snippets. He used to play on the street and on the underground, no two ways about it, to get good at playing guitar, singing, rapping, performing, writing you must practice.

Yeah Ed came up in the grime scene. He's always done his own singing type of thing but could hold his own on tracks with grime mc's so the scene embraced him and he reached a more "urban" audience and became more known in the UK, then his career just took off. Ed's a cool guy, he's still friends with people he knew back then even ones who aren't that famous.

Thanks man. I've been waiting for some reaction videos for this specific performance. Hard to believe but this was way before he made it big. Based on the record date he was 21 at the time. His reference to sleeping on the couch goes back to his struggling teen years in London, but extends to him going balls out in LA and ending up spending 6 weeks on Jamie Fox's couch after Jamie's manager caught Ed's performance in local clubs. Check out Nine Days and Nights of Ed Sheeran on CZcams.

He got known from the grime scene because he got known through Jamal edwards (RIP) who was crucial to the whole scene in videoing grime artists and putting them on CZcams when grime was still ‘underground’ and not considered a mainstream genre. You seen how he made his own beat in 2 minutes, he’s shockingly talented and ran through the same routes as many grime artists, what he could/can bring was basically what grime artists wanted to connect to to diverse their music. Music and strife overcomes race always.

FINALLY! Finally man.. damn. I love that this performance is now getting the attention it deserves.
I also reallyyy loved your reaction. You took the time to listen to the lyrics and honestly, your reaction and energy kinda took me back to when I was in high school seven years ago. I was in class in a computer classroom and I saw this video just got released and I HAD to see it. So I secretly plugged in my earphones into the computer, went to CZcams and listened to it and I was BLOWN away, but I couldn´t let anyone know at that moment and had to be super careful the teacher would not notice. That night I kept watching it over and over again and jamming to it in my bedroom and just be amazed by his bars and flow, his cheeky lyrics and dope ass punchlines all guided by his guitar playing and on the spot beat-making. It was like this unusual but perfect combination of hip-hop and rock/folk elements with crazy loop pedal build-ups. It made such an impression that I wanted to be able to sing/rap along so to this day I still know most of the lyrics off the top of my head.
Now the thing why I'm saying 'finally' is because back then no-one would even listen to me when I said Ed Sheeran was the best artist ever, because people only knew him for his slow and soft lovesongs and that wasn't 'cool' and they wouldn't even care to look any further. So I am so glad that you now watched it and payed attention and care for it as much as I do. Sorry for this waaay too long story, I hope the appreciation shows. You made me feel 16 again haha. Love from The Netherlands!

I saw him at heinz field as the opener for the opener after Taylor Swift and him became close mates. That man did this in front of my eyes. I have seen him at PPG and when the NHL arena couldnt hold all of his fans hes now at Heinz Field. He STILL does this. Its just him and his loop pedal and guitars. The most he has ever needed help is when he breaks a guitar string and someone runs him another acoustic. He hasn't changed at all. I love when he did Drunk in Love live with beyonce. btw the bar u couldnt understand, perhaps cuz of the accent, was "-now I'm on a new level, watch how I step on the track without a loop pedal".
A loop pedal is a tool, usually used by guitarist but can be used for way more, and is often done in a computer these days, that lets you play something, like a guitar riff, for a few measures, and then have it start looping that part. So you can have that part keep playing, and then play a different guitar part or vox to go with it, or loop more on top of it. He used it when he was stacking his riffs and vocals earlier in this song. It's the foot pedals on ground.
So the bar is playing off how you step on a loop pedal to make a song, and he's saying he steps on the track in other ways.

great reaction bro, glad you got to this, if you not checked his latest f64, thats a must! ed is versatile, he started as more of a rapper busker . worth also checking the original version of this from 2010 or so when it first blowed him up, this is a reloaded version slightly differerent, but sick still.

Davey, check his live performance at the last grammy’s with the loop pedal. Especially in front of all his peers. Everyone performing at the Grammy’s has all sorts of production and Ed rocked up with a guitar and a loop pedal. Also, if you don’t know, it was Jamie Foxx that helped him when he arrived in LA. Ed slept on his couch for a while.

This is Ed before the Ed that you know today, shape of you was the song that officially marked that Ed made it. Success. Don't get me wrong, Ed was famous before Shape of you but after that song, everyone knows who he is. His live shows and performances were what he was known for, his live music he makes when he plays. There's actually a meme where on his first album, his acoustic live versions of his songs were better then the studio songs and only Ed Sheeran can do that lol. If you get a chance, go watch him live, he makes all the music himself live on stage.

He was definitely already an international superstar before Divide and Shape of you.
Thinking out loud has 2.7 billion views. He did the soundtrack to the Hobbit. He was on Ellen and Conan 4 years ago.
But yeah, this video was way before thinking out loud too.

The bit you kept rewinding he’s saying “loop pedal” . That’s the orange mic you were commenting on. He builds up the track and backing vocals and beats with his loop pedal.
When he wrote this (at 15yo) he didn’t have a house and he was couch surfing at various mates 😅

He did have 'something' his dad was a art dealer or something like that and his mum was a publicist, but respect to the guy he didn't want hand outs and make his own way, but he always had 'something' to go back to if it didn't work out, he sofa surfed on couches of other artist like Jamie Foxx, Rizzle Kicks, Big Narstie so never really lived on the streets but again this was because he was trying to take in the different musical styles and influences, not bashing him respect the guy massively just trying to dispel inaccuracies

Other random Ed fact. On the song "Dont" of his he originally had swearing on the "dont f*** with my love" but took it out becsuse a taxi driver in NYC of his said his daughter likes ed but he swears a lot. Brits typically swear a lot and he never thought much of it but removed it all from the song because of that convo.
