My opinion of McLaren build quality went even further down after this particular vid, lol. I'm shocked at how amateur-hour many of the reliability failures seem at a glance. I'm sure it's not easy to design a large panel of roof glass to fit on a supercar that is actually meant to lay down good track times, but it even being a common failure point is worse than if they hadn't done it in the first place. The intake breaking apart and screwing up the turbos is completely unacceptable though, wtf.

As a Citroen nerd, seeing that this car has hydropneumatic suspension makes me happy, even if it still has coil springs around the struts. Also, while a lot of folks may miss the more humorous videos with Stevon, this McLaren rebuild feels like it's really getting back to the rebuilds part of the channel name. It's been mostly "Rich builds" for a long time, which is by no means a bad thing, but watching you wrench on vehicles and solve problems is oddly calming. It's like it's demystifying the engineering that goes into these fancy cars, and it's both fascinating and reassuring that my own car repairs aren't going to be that complicated lol.

I don't know if Rich was joking, but those special lock-nuts for the turbo studs are actually designed deliberately to have "damaged" threads - to ensure they won't back off.
The way they work is the threads near the flange are normal, but towards the other side, there are a few threads that are crushed towards the flange slightly. When you install them, they bind up, ensuring they won't back off, even without loctite (which won't work very well due to the high temperatures at the turbo).
If you see them used on your stock car, make sure you don't replace those locking nuts with regular nuts because regular nuts will loosen due to engine vibrations and thermal cycling.

Great video! Haven't had any idea how these types of cars are built. A lot of insightful information here. However, you have successfully dissuaded me from ever owning a car like this lol
