  • After spending a couple of weeks in the coastal resorts of Pattaya and Hua Hin, I was back in Bangkok.
I had heard about a place called Pata Zoo, located on the roof of one of the city's oldest malls. Unfortunately, it had made headlines around the world for all the wrong reasons.
One of the attractions is a gorilla called Bua Noi. She has spent 30 years alone in a cage and her situation is angering animal rights campaigners across the world, including the singer/actress Cher.
I had mixed feelings about visiting but I figured I should go and see for myself the conditions of the zoo. If it was really as bad as made out in the media, at least the video might put others off visiting.
Join me as I visit Bangkok's most controversial zoo.

Thai zoos aren't up to par, at least the ones I've seen.

I assume you're looking out for your visa and liberty, and I just want to raise awareness. This reminds me of the movie 'Midnight Express' and the grim conditions in a Turkish prison, where prisoners are kept in iron boxes for 22 hours a day... At least the prisoners get let out for 2 hours. I'm sure the animals have acclimated to the 110°F+ (44°C) temperatures, and the raw concrete must make it doubly comfortable. Words can't express the disgust I feel towards people who are okay with seeing this for entertainment and profit.
