All you gear heads take note - this (and the majority of her vids) are recorded on a $300 Sterling SUB bass, with no other effects, and she sounds absolutely unbelievable! I don’t even know where to start but she’s a very special player and is truly inspirational. It’s a word that gets chucked around a lot to the point it ends up feeling meaninglessness, but I truly get goosebumps hearing her play and makes reminds me why I love this instrument. Thank you 👏
I used to play bass in High School but I kinda fell out of it because of depression and other things. But after discovering your channel recently, I've decided to start taking bass lessons again and when I met with my teacher, and he asked me what my goals as a bass player are and what style(s) of playing I wanted to learn I just showed him this video and said: "I want to be able to play like Julia someday". So, in other words, you've inspired me to get back into one of the few things that have brought me joy in this world, and I thank you for that.
Wow this is funny because the same happened to me. i'm a drummer, audio engineer and producer but stop producing music 7 years ago. I was deep in shtt and depressed as hell, and one day looking at her videos i jumped out my bed and said enough... i Will start playing saxophone because this was one of my dreams and so i did, i even called my sax Julia. This was one year ago, and now Ive been playing sax an in maybe one more year i Will start producing again. This happened because Julia plays with her soul, and thats why she touches our hearts...
It might be too obvious to mention, but aside from heaps of super tight technique and deep groove, Julia's basslines are her own compositions, inspired by the songs' original basslines but unique pieces of music in their own right - written, practised, memorised. Beautiful.
I was wondering if any of it is improved or it's all composed and then played. Either way it's just crushingly fantastic, but I have been curious. It inspires me to write out and practice more fills like that.
I've literally been waiting for her to play this specific song!!! SHE SMOKED THIS SHIT!!!!!!! Julia, you are one of the BEST bass players I have ever seen/heard IN MY LIFE!!!!!❤❤🙏🏽🙏🏽👌👌😲😲
The Grammys should create a category for bassists that cover other bassists baselines, so Julia can win that Award every year. She's phenomenal! Go girl...
Phenomenal. I love when she’s plays extra notes between the groove. And the expression on her face when she knows she’s knows yeah that was funky. Simply lovely.
Wow! 0:52 and 1:54 You always find a way to make the longest fills fit in! You keep driving this track all along, even at 3:54 - where do you find all this energy? 4:02 asserting your proverbial melodic fiber with style... Wow, Julia! Wow!
OMG. She channeling Louis (RIP). The Music Man replica has a lot to do with it. But it's the AGGRESSION that makes me hard. I broke my neck grooving to this. Lord. Have. Mercy. Back to 1979. Move to El Lay already, JP.
I'm 73 and have started to learn the bass guitar. I need to listen to lots of bass playing and you are my inspiration that anything is possible! I know, it requires plenty of practice, practice, practice. I hope you realise the effect you have on other people who love music, particularly the bass guitar! You are not alone in a room with a bass guitar, you have lots of admirers around the world who enjoy your bass playing.
Watch once for the playing, watch a second time just for the facial expressions! Hard to take in both at the same time. Thank you once again for a masterpiece!
Try watching it with the sound muted some time. It's easier to soak in the intangibles. It does require a larger screen to get the full effect. There is something magical about Julia that's easier to concentrate on without the sound. She is also spectacular with the sound on. :)
No other bass artist makes me smile bright and silly during the ENTIRE track. Pure bliss, its so perfect, but without losing any natural groove. It's so amazing.
I shouldn't watch this at 5am, now i want to call in sick to stay home and play bass!! You are the most inspiring player on youtube and we all love you for it!! ❤
Love this! To my ears (disclaimer: the ears of an old, square, white drummer, so, you know, context), this performance sounds like if Flea and John Entwistle had a baby, and that baby grew up playing bass with Prince. 11 out of 10!
Awesome!!!! My uncle Melvin Ragin aka Wah Wah Watson played rhythm guitar on this track! On of my favorite songs he sat on as well as many others hits!!! RIP to Wah Wah Watson!!!!!
Julia, I have listened to this video several times. It brings back some awesome nostalgia from my childhood. I'm 53 now. But, this reminds me of times in the 80s at my cousins house in OKC listening to all of his records. Back then, in OKC, there were no R&B FM radio stations. There was an AM station that was good from about Noon until 7pm. No internet. It was the record store. Soul Train over broadcast TV (So, we couldn't miss it). Jackson 5, Prince, Commodores and more. So, special was that time. Anyways, Thanks for the awesome nostalgia. You did a fantastic job.
I can very, very easily see Julia becoming that "hidden secret weapon" of high-profile musicians. They'll hire her for studio recordings and certain live events, all the while just owning that bass 🤘
I really love your articulation of the main bass loop in this song. So technical with all these tiny details played perfectly each time. You're the best Julia!
I love Louis Johnson he would be proud to hear you replay his bass lines to perfection, well done, at your age it's incredible especially since it's music from my time.
Why she isn’t playing professionally as a studio musician (or more), I can’t say…but someone is missing the boat not hiring her! Now oozing with confidence! Love it!
I think she would be able to pull off the studio musician thing, but playing super busy like this won't get you much session work. She does sound freaking amazing though.
I hope one day she makes it. She needs to be on stage, her and Joe Dart are the only two bass players who have my jaw drop on floor, Julia is incredible. A pure genius!
Giiiiiiirl, you are so NASTY on the bass!! Great job playing the licks & I believe Louis Johnson would be proud of your ab-libs! Truly tasteful & funky!! Bravo!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
As we thought it couldn’t get any better, she hit it out of the ballpark. Congrats with the .100 vids. There’s guys out there playing Harder and faster, no doubt, but how many can play with the same level of feel for the Groove that she can. It’s a magic toutch. What a exciting journey it have been so far, and it have only just begun.
It's like you took the original part which is an incredible and difficult thing to play and decided it needed a bit more going on! Loved those parts where you basically doubled string and horn fills!
I should've kept track of the amount of time it took me to pick my jaw off the floor, lol. If you don't get a call from either George Johnson or Quincy Jones... Wow. All of your fills were absolute fire. I dare you(or anyone else) to top this. Cheers.
Wow.......... I mean like WOW!!!!!!! Julia shredded that track like a high speed blender!!! And that triplet run-up coming out of the bridge going back into the last chorus... OMG!!!!! Just go ahead and give her the crown she earned!!!! Well done Julia... that was hot!!!♨♨♨♨♨

@PaddyLeggBass you are absolutely 💯 on the comment ! Thank you I couldn't have said it better :)
This video is what happens when you spend your time practicing instead of arguing about gear online 😀
The tone is in the fingers!
Majority of her vids? No
@@paulanderson9650I was going to say the same you beat me to it. The magic is in the touch.

Her expansion of the original bass lines and her on the fly improvisation are beyond her young years. She is a gifted artist, a real artist.
She plays in the pocket, and feels the groove. This is more than just playing an instrument.
Louis Johnson is smiling up in heaven .. He was one of the best ever and you do his bassline justice, which is not an easy one..
Amen! He’d love this.
Finally found a comment giving props to the great Louis Johnson aka "Thunder Thumbs"!
Louis Johnson was also playing Music Man 😍
@@svenschwingel8632 Louis put Music Man on the map. JP's sound is from that bloodline and she could be super dope in El Lay.
Yes, Jackson basslines are special, this one is the hardest probably to play.
I wish more modern music implemented this level of bass playing.
Louis Thunder Thumb Johnson would be praising this young lady. She never ceases to amaze me.. goosebumps every time ..
Not many people can cover Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson. Even fewer can do a decent facsimile of it. This young lady does it perfectly!
It might be too obvious to mention, but aside from heaps of super tight technique and deep groove, Julia's basslines are her own compositions, inspired by the songs' original basslines but unique pieces of music in their own right - written, practised, memorised. Beautiful.

1:54 fantastic fill !
Michael Jackson + Julia's bass cover = perfection!
Just when I think there is nothing good left in the world..... The Hair tie Samurai drops a funk nugget. Thanks Julia.
No fancy gear, no low cut T, just feel and technique, that is! Thank you so so much.
No doubt. This young lady shreds it. Mr. Johnson himself would be proud. Respect and a hearty Salute!

One of the reasons why I pay for CZcams Premium. No interruptions! Just pure skill and funk! Thank you Julia for this! Such a jam!

When she makes that face during the whole song you know she's about to kill it and she did🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥amazing job!!!!!
