Well I kinda disagree, walt always was egoistic but he kept it hidden like you said. But heisenberg was the persona he created to satisfy his ego and to believe that he was right in whatever he did. Heisenberg literally grew his ego. As we know that in season 1 he was struggling to kill krazy 8, he repeatedly was saying that he was sorry and he never wanted to kill him but he had no other choice except to kill him but in contrast to that in season 5 he killed 10 men in jail in 2 minute window without even giving a 2nd thought. He even killed mike for no reason which is the point I completely started hating him. Walter always had an egoistic nature. And you can say that he was broken because he always believed that he wasted his potential, it was reflected in his conversation with gretchen. Heisenberg grew his egoistic nature to a point where he completely turned evil. And what's more interesting is that in the end if season 5 he became pure evil. Mr Lambert was the most dangerous version of walt, literally an entire city was afraid of him. And the plus factor this version of walter had that he had no ego left to satisfy and nothing left to lose making him most dangerous character in entire serious. Well Long thing in short 1) Walt- Egoistic Nd Broken 2) Heisenberg- Evil And Narcissist character. 3) Mr Lambert- Pure Evil and has nothing to lose, can go to any extreme and has no ego left to satisfy

And there is no denying that he is evil. But the thing is that walt was never an evil character from beginning. He was egoistic but not evil. In season 1 we all know why he started cooking meth, he thought that he would die from cancer and so to provide cover the future expenses of the family. Walt was quite sure that he would die from cancer in few months and that is a very important detail. But heisenberg cooked because he wanted to satisfy his pride and ego. He already had more than to spend but he did that for himself. The fact that he would die already by cancer he started doing these criminal activities and then later turned evil. In the beginning of season 3 he was finding a way for himself to not feel guilt bout the plane crash, telling himself that it wasn't his fault and all he did was for the right cause. Although plane crash wasn't his fault it was literally unintentional but he indeed was the part of the crime. And this part of the series affected him the most and is the major reason for his character development.
