Of all the worlds I've played in the Super Monkey Ball series, Sinking Swamp is the one that made me really afraid of heights.

Lol I completed this game tons of times as a kid.
But I never got to ultra heaven or the swamp ;-;
Use no continues in the main game to get the Sinking Swamp. Then use no continues there to get Ultra Heaven.
You can tell when you haven’t used a continue when the world had a crown in world select.
What happens if you use continues? You can’t unlock them anymore? Or you have to do the worlds again

So I'm halfway through this, the first Super Monkey Ball game I've checked out beyond 2 Deluxe. A bit late to the party, you could say. But I remember rolling my eyes at the announcement of a jump feature back around its release date so, I thought hey let's see how that turned out...
Did they mistake their own game for a platformer? When what it is is a puzzle game with elements of a racing game. These levels are too big for their own good; they end up being too much mild variations upon each other (not distinct enough) and they are not puzzles to solve so much as ground to cover.
I'm liking the art direction a lot (aside from the dull goals redesign) and I'm all for throwing in a lot more easier stages in order to ramp up much more gradually and garner a sense of accumulated achievement; I just wish these were easier in more creative ways. Remember when Domes was a tiny rectangle that was one of the most infuriating late-game eye-curlers you could suffer through in SMB2? And Labyrinth was this ultra massive mega level... about half the size of a random pick of these stages (which don't even have names)? World of difference between that frustrating genius and this kind of level design. Not that I'm saying it's bad; it's just not a bag of distinct gems like the originals were an utter joy being. They've too much play space and so has the user (see next paragraph), and it's spoiled the balance and character a more limited pallette provided them.
Jump. *face palm* A jump button makes about as much sense in an SMB game as an instakill figure four leglock does in a zombie survival military shooter. Nope! Just, nope. If motion controls aren't good enough by themselves, then do the sensible thing and don't make your game motion controlled. Simple!
I haven't checked out any of the other more modern releases yet but really, would anyone have been disappointed at this stage by more of the same? This is maybe the one series that least requires innovation in terms of game mechanics. All they really want to do is to make yet more awesome *puzzle* stages (that still make you feel like you're in a fight with physics). And rank them a bit less haphazardly to avoid so many difficulty dips and spikes. And that's pretty much it! Aside from lovely graphics and awesome soundtracks (and perhaps new side-games and ways to frame level progress).
I don't begrudge them trying something new but it doesn't look like it's turned out all that well. Please tell me this is its own little oddball thing, and jumping isn't a regular feature in the series now?
After Monkey Ball Deluxe, the original creators went bankrupt and Sega got other companies to make games in the series. I think this is the only game to have a jump button, but sadly the series just kept going downhill with very flat, boring, uninteresting levels :P
If you want a good example, look at Super Monkey Ball 3D for the 3DS

I have been playing through the HD remaster (on PC so the controller input is absolute crap). Through the whole game, I was thinking to myself "I don't remember this level being THAT much of a pain in the ass". Save for Ultra Heaven, I think they overshot the difficulty in the remaster, or maybe the PC version is somehow inferior.
It's to the point where a lot of stages can only be done with the less-than-optimal strats.
I for some reason could not get passed the 5th world. Either that platform was way too small or the octo-pirate always had his tentacles in the way.
That octopus was the bane of my existence
