Buffing and Waxing Boat Gelcoat to Remove Oxidation [Pro Tips]

  • Getting oxidation of of boat gelcoat and returning it to like new gloss is a three step process. First, we need to buff the boat with a wool pad and compound to remove oxidation. Second, once the oxidation is gone we need to polish the boat with a synthetic pad and a polish to get the boat as glossy as possible. Finally, it is time to wax. Waxing is important to protect the boat. However, it is the least important of these three steps! Focus on doing a great job of compounding and polishing and you will get great results! If you have any questions after watching the video just leave them below in the comments and Ill get back to you. Brian
    Products I recommend using:
    Presta Super Cut Compound
    Presta Chroma 1500 polish
    Presta White Wool Pad
    Presta Green Synthetic Wool Pad
    Farleca or Colonite Wax
    Makita 9237 Buffer

Hi Brian - I followed your instructions pretty much to the letter and got great results. Had some oxidation starting on the hull of my 23-ft navy blue Sea Hunt. Your three step process worked wonders. Threatening to shave in the morning in the shimmer of the finished glossy hull. End step I used Collinite wax which produced excellent results. Only thing that I did different was drizzle a wee bit of Baby Oil on the pad for the polishing step [advice from a friend]. Thanks again. Joe

Sportfishing Boats this question is for my bathtub, I have a well and high iron levels so the tub was stained, I got the stains out, I guess I over scoured it, it doesn’t shine anymore, I was wondering if I could do the first two steps to get the shine back and forget the wax because of bathing? Any thoughts?

Thanks for your clear & concise presentation. After watching I purchased some Presta Supercut compound, Presta Ultra cutting creme (couldn’t find the chroma you used) & Collinite 476 super coat wax. I’m using it on a fiber glass Freightliner truck cab that is/was chalky. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I previously tried to use my car polishing equipment and wasn’t getting the finish I wanted. I looked on CZcams and found you. (I would never have used anything this aggressive - but glad I took your advice). Thanks again.

Great Video! I liked and subscribed. Two quick questions about the process:
    1) I assume I should clean the boat before cutting....is there a good effective way to do this in a Winter storage building without access to water from a hose?
    2) In the past when I have attempted all this, there seems to be a chalky residue on the gelcoat after cutting.....should this be cleaned off before polishing? Again, any recommendations on how to do this, again without access to water?
    Thanks so much!

Hey first and foremost Thank you! Watching from Florida- I have an RV with a fiberglass finish. It has oxidized an unbelievable amount to the point where the bright blue is now a powder blue-I've read a few comments but still have a few questions....what are the specific products you use, the pads and what speed you use the machine at for each of these steps

Iris, if you go to the channel page you will see 4 other videos on gel coat. They will help answer your questions. One thing I left out in those videos was speed for the buffer. For Compounding 1800rpm, polishing 1400rpm. Brian

Just a guess. Probably atleat 2quarts of compound and two white wool pads. 1 quart of polish and one green pad.

I did your entire process step by step last fall. It came out great. When I get my boat out of storage in the next month, should I just do a wash and a wax? Do you recommend a final polish before?

Indiana started my own small business polishing. So my question is, what's the difference between buffing gel coat vs. single stage or a base clear. I've only bone the first step on buffing them, so I've pretty new to buffing. And I've only used 3M foam pads. And I love them for polishing the dimond plate, which makes it so much easier.

Watching from Mt. Holly, VA. Great advice. I have a Porter Cable machine, but I like you larger wool pads. I’ll look to see if I can get a larger backing pad for the larger wool pads. I have a badly oxidized blue/white Nautic Star. Gets afternoon sun daily.

Great video, very informative! You mentioned "white wool pad" in the products, but the black one is being used on the boat for oxidation removal. Should I use the black one to remove oxidation? Also, what do u use in between applications to remove the product? Thanks again!

    • @SportfishingBoats
      @SportfishingBoats  Před 3 lety +2

Presta’s white wool single sided pad is what I would recommend. That particular pad requires a 3M coupling an additional expense that isn’t justified for diy work IMHO. Use microfiber towels to remove left over product before going on to next section.

Thanks for the information. I have been looking at a few restore boat CZcams. I am about ready to refurbish the outside of my 2004 Sea Pro 21’8” boat I purchased a couple of years ago for fishing here on the East Cap, Baja Sur, Mexico - Sea of Cortez. I will need to order a good buffer from Harbor Freight and whatever else tools. Trying to get that list down. Then I have to have someone bring those items down or have them shipped here. Such is life living in MX. LOL 😝. I have change allot on the boat already - electronics, added new 175 HP Suzuki, a collapsible T-Top, transom savers (boat stiks) and boat buddies. Now I need to work on the boat itself finish. The finish looks fairly good since it has been mostly in a garage by the previous owner. However, I am contemplating a new gel coat, or even a wrap. What are your thoughts about boat wraps in terms of practicality???

Seconds to do and more secure.
