Which buffing pad for boats
Using the correct buffing pad is essential to getting good results. We also need to use the right buffer. For boats that is a no load orbital polisher/buffer. I use a Makita 9237. To remove oxidation we need to use a wool pad. Once the Gel Coat is glossy again, we need to switch to a softer blended pad with our polish.

Best Boat Polishing Compounds [2019]
zhlédnutí 19KPřed 5 lety
What makes polishes and compounds good for boat gelcoat has just as much to do with what's NOT in them as in them. Compounds and polishes that contain waxes and silicones give a false gloss and hide oxidation. This one of the reasons I have become a big fan of Presta's products in recent years. They don't contain any waxes or fillers. My two favorite are SuperCut Compound and Chroma Polish. A r...
Best Polisher for Boat Oxidation - Makita, Porter Cable, Harbor Freight [Review]
zhlédnutí 49KPřed 5 lety
To remove oxidation off of boat gelcoat you need a powerful polisher. There are two types available, dual action and rotary. Dual action polishers whether Porter Cable, Griot, Shurhold, Chicago Electric, Flex, Rupes or whoever simply don’t have enough power to remove oxidation. The dual action mechanism is designed to leave the least swirl marks at the expense of power. Youll also notice the DA...
Buffing and Waxing Boat Gelcoat to Remove Oxidation [Pro Tips]
zhlédnutí 331KPřed 5 lety
Getting oxidation of of boat gelcoat and returning it to like new gloss is a three step process. First, we need to buff the boat with a wool pad and compound to remove oxidation. Second, once the oxidation is gone we need to polish the boat with a synthetic pad and a polish to get the boat as glossy as possible. Finally, it is time to wax. Waxing is important to protect the boat. However, it is...
Preventing Oxidation On Boat Gel Coat[How Pros Do It!]
zhlédnutí 69KPřed 5 lety
Keeping boat gel coat from oxidizing requires more than just waxing. Gelcoats best defense against UV rays is to reflect them away rather than absorbing them. The key to this is to keep the gelcoat itself as glossy as possible by regularly polishing the gelcoat then waxing it! IMPOTANT NOTE - the gelcoat needs to be completely free off oxidation before you polish. If you have oxidation check ou...

Thanks for this Brian. This is very helpful. I have the Presta super cut compound in my cart and the FARECLA G3 Wax Premium Liquid Protection 500ml. Just have to figure out the wax! Says this stuff comes from Turkey! I don't have a high speed buffer so I will get one. Just wondering what size you are using as I can only fine 6 or seven inch on line. Thanks BTW watching from Keswick Ontario Canada.

Writing you from Eastern Ontario Canada.. Question; what do you recommend when buffing around letters and nooks and cranies? Just started buffing at the back where the letters are. I tried with a hand pad and that worked pretty well but not sure it’s the right way. I plan to remove the cleats when I get tothat part. Should I.. Thanks, Dan

This is like telling someone who has stage 4 cancer that there's going to be lots of work, pain, frustration and that the cure, if it works, may prolong your life another 6 months. Why the F_CK is gelcoat so hard to polish? Why use it if it's that way? Jesus effing Christ, what idiot designed this abomination. I worked with a professional polisher/grinder, all the grits from 600 to 5000, all the supposed 'best' compounds, waxes, polishes, etc. , including wet sanding/polishing and after 1 hour I had a decent shine on 1 square foot of surface. And 6 months later - not 20 years - I had to do it all over again, WHAT A FOOKIN WASTE OF TIME! Let's see, my car is exposed to 'direct sunlight' and sits in the sun every day for 6 hours. Not just 5 months, but the entire year. It has clearcoat over it. After 20 years it has no oxidation or fade. Why can't they do this on boats. Similarly, why does my 454 c.i. 7.4 liter GMC based V8 have a carburetor, which is nothing more than an organized leak. Given that no car motor has used carburetors for the last 40 years, why does my boat have one? Talk about dead (and useless!) technology! Reply

So I will use a compound first. When should I apply the new stickers. My guess is after the polish but before the wax. Just want to make sure the stickers will adhere after polishing. Thank you

Hi Brian, prior to watching your video I purchased these products and was wondering if you have any experience with them. The compounds are Aqua Buff 1000-F and Aqua Buff 2000 and the polish is Star brite premium marine polish with PTEF, I have not used them yet was wondering if you could give me your opinion of these products before I use them. The compound is made by Hawkeye Industries and also is said to not have any fillers or waxes. I assume that the polish you use has some amount of compound or is it none and what are your thoughts of the polish I bought. Thanks for any info you may have.

Thanks for this - I thought with a new boat, you don't polish as it is removing gelcoat - if you do this multiple times a year aren't you grinding away gelcoat? Or is the reflectiveness the key to slowing oxidation?

I bought all the Presta products you suggested. I find the compound leaves the surface feeling smooth, but when I use the green polishing pad with the Presta polish, the surface seems rougher and not as shiny. Weird right^. Would you suggest using the blue pad for polish vs hte green pad? Thanks for your videos, they really help

I tried 3M's Medium compound plus wax and have been unimpressed. I have a 1986 C&C sailboat that I don't think was compounded, polished and waxed much (the owner was in his 70's along with his crew). I'm 53 and don't have great shoulders and elbows. I have a Makita polisher/grinder that I got for free from someone who owed me money. Haven't used it yet. What RPM should I be using? When I work in a 2'x2' section - do I polish and then wax that 2' x 2' section, or compound the whole thing, THEN polish THEN wax? Thanks for the clear videos. I'll be taking your product advice. Fingers crossed.

Great Video! I liked and subscribed. Two quick questions about the process: 1) I assume I should clean the boat before cutting....is there a good effective way to do this in a Winter storage building without access to water from a hose? 2) In the past when I have attempted all this, there seems to be a chalky residue on the gelcoat after cutting.....should this be cleaned off before polishing? Again, any recommendations on how to do this, again without access to water? Thanks so much!
