  • After my video "RANKING THE TOP 32 DISC GOLFER BY DISTANCE"', that sparked a lot of discussions, I of course had to do it again. I was too scared to do this by myself so Eagle McMahon joined me to rank all these players by their putting skills. Excuse the bad audio. I'm working on figuring out what's wrong with my camera and how to fix it. So here's our list. Maybe slightly controversial 😂

My thought was, both statements can be true. You can be a top 3 putter, and it be the weakest part of your game. Also, Im pretty sure Paul said in a video a while back, that he planned to work on putting in the offseason because it was the weakest part of his game.

My opinion is that Eagle deserves #1 spot as putter and many other categories as well. I think most of his problems have to do with distance management on drives. He constantly throws too far or too short leaving him with long putts, which he still nails almost every single time. He also has problems with accuracy on control throws in the woods and tight fairways. I also think his anger management issues are luckily a thing of the past :D

I should tell you that even though you along with many others see it as fun, it's not, it hits the players mentally you know. You can't make bold statements (saying it's for fun) about someone's game. so, according to me, 'generalizing' a player's is wrong, atleast include some stats to prove your statement (or) add the year like ' in 2020 or 2019 or something ' so that even if you say someone is below the others they can just laugh it off thinking it's just that one year. Just because Simon or Eagle and their fans think that its fun, it's not at all fun for other players. For example, Mcbeth is an amazing putter for soo long and he proved that by winning the games, and you can't say you are better that him just because he is not his best this year, it's not right.

Here are some statistics from UDisc. I took these from the Pro Tour category, which might not be the best choice, I don't really know enough about disc golf to be sure. The other categories are National Tour Stats and Season Stats. I figured that the Pro Tour numbers match most closely to the big tournaments that we are probably mostly concerned with.
I started entering a bunch of different players' numbers in a spreadsheet, but after a few minutes it was clear that the top three are Paul, Eagle, and Ricky. So I won't mention the other players, who seem by the numbers to be a fair bit behind these three.
UDisc's numbers go back to 2016, at least the ones that are readily available. Also, all of this is Circle 1x only. I didn't look at Circle 2.
    Paul's Circle 1x percentages from 2016 through 2020: 87, 88, 87, 91, 87
    Eagle's Circle 1x percentages from 2016 through 2020: 83, 84, 83, 91, 88
    Ricky's Circle 1x percentages from 2016 through 2020: 86, 85, 83, 88, 87
Paul's average over five years: 88
Eagle's average over five years: 85.8
Ricky's average over five years: 85.8
    Paul's average for 2019 and 2020: 89
    Eagle's average for 2019 and 2020: 89.5
    Ricky's average for 2019 and 2020: 87.5
Okay, those are some statistics. What follows are my opinions. It seems to me that by these numbers (which admittedly is not the full picture--no Circle 2, only Pro Tour, only five years, etc.) Paul is the winner. His average over five years is 2.2% higher than Eagle's. Eagle was better over the past two years, but only by half a percent. In a head to head match up, Paul was best in four years and Eagle was best in one year, and then only by one percentage point.
Also, Paul's putting has not dropped off in recent years, as some have claimed in earlier comments. Like so many other aspects of his game, his putting has been very consistent.
One last comment regarding the video. I really don't think it's a good idea for fellow pros to be critiquing each other in such a public way. These people have to play with each other over and over again, and I assume they are mostly friendly. This doesn't seem like a good way to build camaraderie with your buddies. Personally, I would be much more interested in a video by Simon and Eagle that talked about the differing styles of putting each person uses, and how this affects their putting game. Why does Kevin putt the way he does and what are the advantages and disadvantages of his particular method? What is it about James's style that makes him so much fun to watch? Is there anything there that amateurs can imitate? What is Chris Dickerson doing with his legs on those long jump putts and how does this contribute to his amazing putting? That kind of thing.

That is nice analysis. I think you identified the biggest hole in its lack of C2 putting which seems to swing a lot of tournaments. There is at least another hole in the stats in general. There are times when running a C1X putt is bad golf. I am thinking of combinations of low ceilings and runaway greens. I am also thinking of Nate Sexton”s second to last “putt” of USDGC 2017. I think Simon is very respectful of people, but this does push a line of gossiping. On the other hand since it is so public, it just stands as an open honest opinion.

Here are some more statistics. These are Circle 2 putts, from the Pro Tour only, from 2016 through 2020. Some of the younger players don't have results for all of those years. This list includes the top 8 players from Simon's list.
Here are their C2 putting percentages from 2016-2020, in order by average of all five years. Averages are at the end in parentheses.
      Eagle: 38, 32, 30, 32, 34 (ave.=33.2)
      Ricky: 32, 34, 31, 36, 32 (ave.=33)
      Paul: 39, 28, 27, 31, 31 (ave.=31.2)
      Kevin: n/a, 32, 19, 34, 36 (ave.=30.25)
      James: 29, 25, 34, 25, 34 (ave.=29.4)
      Calvin: n/a, n/a, 28, 28, 31 (ave.=29)
      Chris: 26, 09, 33, 38, 32 (ave.=27.6)
      Matt: 24, 22, n/a, 28, 36 (ave.=27.5)
Here are their C2 putting percentages, but just the last two years, 2019-2020, in order.
      Kevin: 34, 36 (ave.=35)
      Chris: 38, 32 (ave.=35)
      Ricky: 36, 32 (ave.=34)
      Eagle: 32, 34 (ave.=33)
      Matt: 28, 36 (ave.=32)
      Paul: 31, 31 (ave.=31)
      James: 25, 34 (ave.=29.5)
      Calvin: 28, 31(ave.=29.5)
Now more opinions. Over the long haul, the top three are the same as Circle 1x putting, namely Eagle, Ricky, and Paul. No surprise. As in the Circle 1x putting, the top three are very close to each other, but there is a change in the order, with Eagle in first place. If you add their Circle 1 and Circle 2 percentages over the past five years, you get this ranking:
      Paul: 119.2
      Eagle: 119.0
      Ricky: 118.8
Of course, that number doesn't mean anything in the real world, but it's a combination of their Circle 1 and Circle 2 averages. It's amazing to me how close they are. Maybe the final conclusion from all of this is that they are all three amazing players, and there's really no need to try to separate them.
I guess you could say Paul is slightly better at Circle 1 putts and Eagle is slightly better at Circle 2 putts.

@@hellmerj I wish we had more detailed data. If you're comparing two players and one of them gets more tee shots into the 50-60ft range while the other is more often in the 70-80ft range (i.e. just outside C2), it's going to lower the first player's C2 putting stats, just because nearly everything in the 50-80 foot range is a jump putt that ends up close to the basket. The same thing applies to C1x also. If one player has a lot of 30ft birdie putts and another player has a lot of 15ft par putts, it's going to distort their stats.
What we really need to see is each player's putting percentage at 20ft, 25ft, 30ft, 35ft, 40ft, 45ft, ... and so on.

I'd like to see the stats for McBeth's putting when he's in the lead and second place is within 2-3 strokes of him, or when he's chasing the leader by a couple of strokes. He doesn't miss and is absolutely unrelenting. I feel (subjectively) that his putting is at its worst when he has a 7-8 stroke lead and is just coasting to the finish line. I think Eagle needs a category for "has the best putting stroke" and Paul should be number one because the only thing that matters is winning and that's what his putt brings him. Eagle may in fact be a better putter but Paul has a gear (that includes his putt) that no one else in the world hits with as much regularity - hence his rating. This was one tough but definitely needed more players and more granularity. Maybe you can this for driving form for the next one?

Maybe, there are so many excellent players out there now. Guys like Eagle and Calvin are gunning for Mcbeth now. its no question that Paul is the number one player still for the time being. Even with his "struggles" by his standards he still holds the highest rating at 1058, but I think these young guns are no joke and just because of the competition I am not sure we will see Paul go on another run like he did in 2019 where he was winning everything. He has missed alot of putts this season, and Jonesboro was no exception. He lost the tournament on the green in the final round.

I like that you have some discussion about each player, kind of thinking out loud about it. It's very interesting hearing pros talk about other pros. Having said that, I think these videos are awesome, keep it up! I also think that the drive to win a tournament, the "wants it" factor is what drives the best putters to be the best, and to be clutch. Who wants to win more than Paul & Ricky? They fight for it and have been for years, and you're seeing that fire in more players now (Eagle/KJ/etc), that's why our sport is so good right now. If a player doesn't have the "I can and will win this tournament" mindset, their putting will be average at best. Confidence is king.

To me, I definitely put Paul and Ricky in clutch. They have that extra gear where, late round 2/early round 3, if they get a 2 or 3 stroke lead, they're just not going to miss another putt and they'll find a way to make that 60+ footer. After that:
    1. Eagle McMahon - He's proven this year that he belongs at number 1. Not only will he make the putts, but his margin of error is so small. He hits the same spot every time, no matter the distance; low on the pole dead-center.
    2. Chris Dickerson - I didn't realize it until this past weekend, but I don't think I'm ever worried that he's going to miss. He just makes putt after putt but he does it so quietly.
    3. Calvin Heimburg - A few hiccups this past weekend don't detract from his consistency. Always on the pole. Always focused. Minimizes strokes on the green.
James Conrad just hasn't been at his usual level this season, and even when he's in the circle, his putt just has so many moving parts that I always feel he could miss at any time.
A few other thoughts: Big Jerm - definitely the weakest part of his game but could so easily be fixed. He has too much lateral motion in his form, especially in his follow-through. He just needs to keep everything more balanced and in a straight line. He likes to tout the mantra "Think long, think wrong" but I really think he could benefit from taking a little more time and just to make sure he's hitting all the points in his form.
Simon - I really think it's all mental for you. You just don't go through that checklist in your head to make sure you're doing everything right on every putt. And you'll know it immediately too, that's why you almost always hit your second putt. It's not about adjusting and tweaking, it's about minimizing the errors and trusting your form and staying consistent. If I had to sum it up in one word: focus.

It's a good idea for Simon to collaborate with Eagle for this breakdown. It brings in extra information and a different perspective... and some cover for criticism.
    (1) Rick's putting isn't up to his normal excellence this year. I think the Lyme took some accuracy and confidence out of his stroke.
    (2) Paul seems to miss putts when he is already out of contention or too far ahead. (is he points shaving?)
    (3) Eagle's putting stroke is dirk/dagger-like and I wouldn't bet against him with someone else's money.
    (4) Conrad maybe overthinks his putts sometimes. What velocity! Some baskets don't like that = push outs.
    (5) Putting is the worst part of Nikko's game. It throws off all the rest of it and totally sabotages his mental game. Vesuvius child!
    (6) I like watching Vinny Cal-zone walk up and just drill in putts like there is a conveyor belt between him and the bucket... until he misses.
    (7) When KJUSA's game is going south it affects his putting. Confidence is what drives him. If he can't hit his lines it affects his putting.
    (8) Barsby is one of the best when he gets his titration correct. That takes experience and knowledge. Too much... bad, too little... average.
    (9) Emmer-daddy has a really fine putt until he gets near the finish line. Then he begins to doubt. He is great on moving day.
    (10) Malt Ball needs to be on the wave and feeling the flow. Distractions can knock him off the wave and put him back in the lineup.
    (11) Dickerson only misses when there is a glitch in the Matrix. You don't know it's going to happen until the moment has passed (past).
    (12) Gibson needs to get serious about putting... and get a coach, and put in the hours. I don't think he's serious enough to do that.
    (14) Simon is having a rough year. Too much going on IRL. I hope the woman he chose is the correct one! Best wishes and good luck.
    (15) Didn't putting woes bring on the end of Will Schusterick's pro career? ...or did I miss something else? Most painful thing in DG to watch.

I think a lot of frustration comes from people being able to be placed into multiple tiers (Paul should be in almost top three, clutch, and weakest part) and no definitive metrics for what someone's game is (rollers, grenades, forehand?). For example, Jerm has the best forehand approach in the game, but if he has to throw a backhand approach, he's one of the worst. Also, while we know your trying to not hurt people's feelings, it's weird to put Emerson in the same tier as GG or Drew when he consistently out puts them every tournament

Man! I watch a LOT of disc tourneys, and I think you both really nailed it. Eagle, don't be shy about calling it (you) like it is, as you are the best....but McBeast is the clutch guy. Simon, you assessed yourself accurately I think as well. If I were to change anything, I'd put Calvin next to James....there could be a tie at that spot.

I think cdick and Calvin above James just because James isn't having a great season this year. Cdick is always good and Calvin clutched a huge putt at Jonesboro hole 17.

You should do another one of these but give each person certain points per attribute out of 10 points. ie: Paul Mcbeth: power 7, accuracy, 9, putting 9, forehand 8. Something like that.

Form is not objective. It's the most subjective.

    • @micah_lee
      @micah_lee Pƙed 3 lety

@@playdg Okay, so sure there are many many different putting strokes in the top 32. And they are all exceedingly good. But there is a difference between McBeth's stroke and Keith's stroke. It honestly come down to consistency. Also, some people's strokes tend to hit the basket differently. Objectively there is the best way to putt. Although the best putter in the world may putt differently than that because the human aspect is huge. And some people's bodies can do things differently than others.

      @DJfractalflight Pƙed 3 lety

micah_lee it's true. I can literally fart over and over, where my butt inhales and then exhales farts. Try it. It's worth the sphincter calibrations. We all have our own fart forms, but some people make farts more often, and some more rapidly, but I won't claim to be the best. I like to do the Paul McBeth leg kickback during mine, personally, because the angle and thrust can control not only volume but tone!

All I know is that when I’m watching the coverages, I expect Eagle and the other “almost top 3” contenders to make it from circles edge, but I’m not super surprised if they just miss or hit off the cage...however, I am always surprised when Paul misses. I guarantee he would win 9 times out of 10 in a putt off against Eagle, but I guess that would be considered a clutch move too?? Lol

Agreed. This is the pro tour, so you're held to world class standards. If your putting is lagging behind the other players, calling it out is just a fair assessment. To quote Michael Corleone, "It's not personal. It's strictly business."

You can throw all the stats at me you want, Paul Mcbeth is #1. There is a reason hes been so dominate for so long and its clutch putting. I dont care how many putts you make when you are in 23rd place, because it doesnt matter. Paul has made more clutch putts than any person in disc golf history.
