Wouldn't it be a good idea to let all the people involved sign a certain amount of prints? Like an extra special edition. Commemorative sort of. For a short amount of time. I know that it is a lot to ask because we artists are quite proud of our work and the amount of work we put in, but it would be a nice gesture and I am sure a lot of people would dig it. Just a suggestion. The way Yannis is trying to be super careful with the pipes is just touching. It can't be easy working in that cold space, my admiration knows no bounds.
Done! That is such a nice idea to collect money for the restauration and I really love this wonderful pictures. So I get a Souvenir that will always remember me on the whole Story of the Konvent and oft all you lovely guys who make it possible (sorry for my bad english as a german beeing, I try my best) 🙂 Best regards from Berlin.
OK, I don't normally comment to this extent, but...Regarding the Sacristy Cabinet that Billy has added to the kitchen: It's a vestment cabinet. The great huge drawers that are very shallow were built to hold the chasubles. That's the large cape like garment a priest wears during the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The fabrics are so heavy they can be damaged by handing them on a hanger so for centuries they have been laid flat for storage. The colors represents the seasons of the church year: Purple is for Advent and Lent. Green for Epiphany and Pentecost, Red is for various holy days -- usually Holy Days of Obligation or Saints days; Pink is for the third Sunday in Advent and Lent and White/Cream/Gold are for Christmas, Easter and Funerals/memorials, All Saints Day. The Chasuble is hung up during the season it is being used normally, and then stored in the drawers when it's not being used and put away for the duration. Today, Michael was talking about wearing gloves to protect him from lead leaching into his skin. Make sure to wash your hands twice with soap and water and cold water too. Warm water opens the pores. I'm so taken with the work at the convent -- the chapel has absolutely touched my heart. Episcopal priest here. Probably that's why. Thank you for sharing this amazing journey. Wish I was about thirty years younger. Oh well...Peace to you all.

Hi again, As an organ builder, I find it interesting to see how you are figuring out where pipes go, checking for wind leaks or ciphers as they are called. The rank that I see in the swell is Salicional... and the pipes are labeled in chromatic order basically...there are NO flats, as are pipes getting shorter, they get sharper, thus they are C, C#, D, D# (not E flat)...etc.
The swell box louvers are called "shutters", and the opening of the swell is to increase volume, thus the sound swells! The big "boxes" as you call them are the 16" Bourdon pipes in the pedal. The pipes are usually tin, not lead, altho larger pipes can be lead.....another thing in a rebuild is that the pipes are full of 100 years of dirt, and dirt in the opening of the pipe mouths can affect the tone. Organ builders, in a rebuild have a metal tub, which they use for washing the pipes.....a good idea for speech. Of course one does not wash the wood pipes, but you need to carefully check out the front mouths....they are called languids I believe. You are doing good work. Pipes will always fit exactly in the rack board, and again you can place them by size, and the note of the pipe. Salicionals are voiced quietly. IF you have a Dulciana it is very quiet.... Diapasons are loud, as are reed pipes, but I don't know what you have for reeds, perhaps an Oboe, and a Trumpet? Organs also had Vox Humanas which are short pipes and sound like kazoos, they are always joined with Salicionals or Gamba's or a Voix Celeste if you have that rank... If you have time, I would like to see the rank composition of your organ.

❤ the organ keys are in Italian. Sali cielo means out in the sky meaning the upper exit tubes. Make sure you look into all keys translations for guidance. Love your work of restauration and togetherness. Big hug to all!!

'Salicional' is a common organ stop, the name deriving from the German 'Salizional', ultimately rooted in the Latin 'salix', willow, from which basic flute-like pipes were made in years gone by. '8 ft' refers to 'normal' pitch, about the middle of the piano keyboard range. 'Salicet' is similar but a '4 ft' stop, pitching an octave higher ('16 ft' stops pitch an octave lower). The names on stops can appear in a number of languages: e.g. Gemshorn, Vox humana, Voix celeste, Piccolo, Viola, Diapason, Flute, etc.

Michael’s artwork is exquisite! Perhaps setting up a go fund me or similar site where people can donate to the restoration of the chapel ceiling may be in order. Sometimes people who can’t afford 39 euros but would like to donate a smaller amount could contribute. Just a thought.

Nicks calmness is essential for a Show-jumper, and comes in Handy in other aspects of Live. ; )
Two things... 1. if you solder lead, you should wear a mask, your lungs will thank you and 2. if the pipes are brass, you can use a polish like is used on brass buttons and housewares - it'll take longer but look lovely. As much as I have enjoyed the kitchen renovation, I anticipate the chapel when it's all restored and honored.

I was also concerned about lead soldering with no mask and I was hoping there would be some comments with tips to help Billy with this job. I’m guessing he needs to tweak his temperature and possibly a different, maybe thin wire of lead to add onto pipe. Good luck Billy
A finer tip soldering iron, such as is used in electronics manufacturing, makes for a much finer and less clunky bead.
And using gloves when handling anything with lead

Michael: Sal is the abbreviation for Salicional. Whilst it is often used as a string stop now, it was originally a narrow diapason. But, a string stop is essentially a narrow open pipe. Kissing cousins! Also, I would recommend that you lay the pipes out from longest to shortest. You seem to have a divided chest. Essentially that means that one side will have c, d, e, f#, g#, a#. The other side will have c#, d#, f, g, a, b. If you know that when you are putting the pipes in, it should be much faster.
The Salicional 8' is meant to be a quiet sound. If there is a Voix Celeste, possibly spelled Vox Celeste, this is a stop meant to pair with the Salicional. The Voix Celeste is of French origin and is purposely tuned sharp to make an undulating sound with the Salicional. Particularly beautiful for soft passages, and etherial when you close the box.
I forgot. I think the tuning around the turn of the 20th century was A=435. We had an organ in Pittsburgh that was from that time period. It sounded fine, However, the orchestra players moaned and groaned when they had to tune their instruments down. I would advocate for the instrument to be tuned to its original pitch. The voicing of the pipes was in that pitch, and the pipes will sing better there.

grateful to read such an informed comment. yes, 432-5 is a "natural harmonic....frequency. i've read that it's almost more felt than a heard thing...a natural resonance. it was changed to create an unconscious discordance.
@@michelebourke4340 That's not true. Orchestras really just wanted to sound brighter and more exciting than the orchestra in the next town, so the pitch kept getting pushed higher. Some orchestras today tune as high as 445 even! But that nonsense about some sort of natural resonance is a myth perpetuated by folks who don't know a dang thing about history.
Having spent some years making stained glass windows, here's a hint for soldering lead that might help, Billy. We used a temperature rheostat to provide excellent control over the heat used for different materials like lead, copper, and steel. It is less messy, and less likely to create a lead puddle, to drop the solder onto the piece than to try to solder it as you would something like zinc or a plumbing pipe. If you have anyone in the area who makes or repairs stained glass windows they could help you with the technique. The goal is to create a smooth joint with no gaps. Be sure to clean your surfaces thoroughly with alcohol a while before you start work. You will have LOT more control if you use a smaller blade soldering tool. The one you are using is way too big for ease and smooth results.

Pip is in charge! I also just ordered a print of Pip, for my husband. Our nicknames for each other for decafe was, "Mouse," & several iterations!
Someone else has probably said this, but regarding the stops: 8 foot or 8' means the pipe sounds in the octave in which it's played on the keyboard. 16' plays an octave lower, 32' two octaves lower, 4' one octave higher, 2' two octaves higher. Then you also have things like 2 and 2/3 foot which is something like an octave and a fifth above the key on the keyboard, or a harmonic sound. Also--some pipes sound like flutes, some like reed instruments (clarinet, etc.), some sound like strings (violin.) Then you have the principal family of stops, which are the main voice of the organ. Salicional (spelling varies) is usually in the string family. The organ is a self-contained orchestra.
I've loved the sound of an organ since childhood but had absolutely NO IDEA till now how complex and sophisticated the instrument is!!
I would do a detailed scan of the ceiling so more detail is not lost. Use a program called Scaniverse and spend the time to get all the details now before they are lost. It is because of a scan like that that the Notre Dame cathedral is more easily restored. All the details of the whole church were scanned before the fire.
For the roses, you should make a cast so that you can make reproductions for later use etc.

Some days before, here at my hometown Berlin, I met two young men from the USA in the subway and they helped me out with with my Wheelwalker, to use the elevator. We had a nice talk and it came over, we had the same Interest in old Churches and old Buildings and suddenly one of both talked about CZcams and a channel from a Family named Petherick. I began to smile and told them, that I am a Fan and look every Day to new Videos and it took out, they both do the same 🙂 You restaurate not only wonderful buildings and organs, you bring people together! My sister, who lives in the US got sick with Covid a year ago, I live in Canada and caught it a few weeks after she did. I was commenting on one of the vlogs while I was recovering and my sister commented on my comment 😂! Use a smaller soldering iron for stained glass for a more precise finish. Also, wear a mask respirator when melting lead.

I would say by the fourth or fifth organ you disassemble, pack, ship,unpack and install you’ll be quite quick with it. 😊

I am incredibly blessed to be married to a man with similar talents. Together we did a complete remodel of a home roof to crawl space. I learned to much and understand what is involved, but this organ rebuild is in another realm altogether. Thank you Pethericks for sharing this phenomenal journey.

I know they are a wonderful instrument but no wonder they are a dying breed when they are so complicated to move and reassemble, you have to be very clever and have the patience of a saint ! It will be a marvellous addition to have at the convent. Well done for all your hard work.
When engineers worked on lead cable. They were allowed a pint of milk a day, to counteract the lead taken through the skin. Good to see the organ coming together.

The pipes are often arranged into ‘C’ & ‘C#’ sides, i.e. the order on the ‘C’ side is C D E F# G# A#, and the order for the ‘C#’ side is C# D# F G A B. Once you identify this order on the wind chest, you’ll know which side of the wind chest the pipe goes on, and it should make putting the pipes in order go faster. BTW - 8’ pitch on the stop knob means ‘normal’ pitch, 4’ an octave above 8’ pitch, 2’ Two octaves above. 16’ pitch is an octave below 8’ pitch. The numbers come from the speaking length of an open pipe. Stopped pipes speak an octave lower than the pitch you hear, i.e. an 8’ stop with stopped pipes, low C will have a speaking length of 4’.

This organ restoration is epic, so lucky you’ve got a bit of Moon magic in helping create the perfect team. I keep wondering if the lovely Moon family moved nearby, maybe Nick could be at the convent more often!! (Sadie & Jen are great together too.) 🤞

I told my husband that I just ordered our Christmas gifts, 2 prints, 1 for him & 1 for me.
Don't expect them to arrive by Christmas (US checking in). We've been together over 45 years & I am a retired Registered Nurse, so we have celebrated holidays as & when.
Once the prints arrive, time for me to search for a sale on framing. I have poster-sized professional fotos, 1 each with each of 2 sons & wives, in frames, professionally matted & framed,, with museum grade glass. No glare/reflection & protected from fading. Also, 1 small, original "cartoon", custom sketched for me by a syndicated artist, who also does incredible pen & ink drawings. And he is a musician as well . . .

I earlier made a comment that I did not think it was good to paint the organ as it might destroy the feeling of the original organ wood, the history and stuff like that. In these videos I see the error in my thinking. The organ face was painted that red color. I must have been thinking about the interior which wasn't painted, and that the whole organ was that way. A big error in my thought process and I apologize for that. Sadly I can and have made big errors in my 71 years on earth.
This is a great project that you have undertaken. I appreciate the chance to learn how these big organs are put together and operate. You all make a great team. I think of you all being like Frodo and his Companions working together to accomplish a seemingly impossible task. Good on you all.

Safety first, watch out for lead fumes while soldering. I love the roses for the front of the organ!
The reinstallation of the four Norfolk Roses is a lovely gesture. Chapeau bas a votre...edit....if these pipes are lead or even lead based Michael, you should be wearing gloves as lead (Pb) is a known carcinogen. Thank goodness you realised Michael and please, wipe down that keyboard after playing it with your gloves on ! Glad you got a real "sound" system in place regarding installation of those pipes !

Hey @Billy just a thought if you use a broom handle and a tape a rag on the end of if you may also be able to get rid of the dust and remnants on the dirt and stuff on the inside of the chamber's. Just like a chimney sweep but using the microfiber you won't damage or score the insides. This could also help provide a proper tune. Maybe ask your friends at the organ saving charity if that makes sense. I would suspect since their open to the air and dusty will settle inside. Maybe use lighted scope camera to see inside them. Thinking like when you need your air ducts cleaned this could provide less friction and air interference

Billy, tie old tea towels on each end of horse (4) edge so ready made temporary rim will reside on your wooden horses tops, to keep pipes from accidentally rolling while you are vacuuming, because you will sneeze once at the wrong time, believe me. God bless you, in advance.
Please dear Petherick family, Nick, Yannis and co, be careful of the lead!!!! I've done lots of sanding and scraping of lead paint on old buildings and always wore goggles, face mask, gloves and clothing that covered my body so I never got lead poisoning. Bearing in mind how ignorant people once were of chemical toxicity, it is vitally important to wear protective clothing!!! Always take a shower and wash your hair after each day also!!! I would hate to see any of you get sick!!! I've actually seen people get lead poisoning because they didn't take safety precautions. Billy you have a huge audience that would be devastated if anything happened. You are a son, husband, brother and father also so please remember all these people and friends who want you to stay healthy and wear protective clothing!!!
Such a joy to learn you are tuning this instrument to 432 Hz! Prior to 1939 this was the case for all music types - it is still referred to as the “God Note” or the “miracle frequency”. Very appropriate for this project?! The sound of 432Hz is in line with nature and is, quite simply, very good for us (whereas 440Hz doesn’t have that same characteristic) and has a positive affect on the cells of our body. The chapel will truly be even more a part of a ‘healing centre’ for everyone 🧡 Brilliant! 🤩
Yes well said. 432 is the healing frequency, healing at a cellular level.
this is not the case, tuning was kinda all over the place before. And the body cell and nature thing is especially untrue, please stop spreading this misinformation. (I recommend the video by musician and music theory youtuber Adam Neely about this topic)

All the work at the convent has been awesome to watch, everyone's devotion to the projects really shines through! On the gold colored organ pipes after cleaning them maybe waxing them would not only help make them bright but may help over time because dust doesn't stick to a waxed surface versus unwaxed. Sometimes you can’t save everything. That ceiling be a monumental expense to restore. You do have some pretty detailed photographs, it may, and I say may be smarter to print out a 1:1 scale on vinyl or fabric of the whole ceiling and apply it like Ryan’s hated wallpaper and touch it up with paint. It will last for your children’s grandchildren.

At least they put the ranks in order on the floor to some extent on the third lot. The organ has many moving parts and it will take a few days at the end to tweak out the remaining issues, Michael maybe should be at the organ keys and Nick at the business end as the pipes got the note on them, it's not hundreds of pipes in one go it's in ranks of 30 or so, it's tedious but there is no need for stress, it's shaping up into something workable!?!
@@thomasherrin6798 One rank is actually 61 pipes for the manuals, or 32 for the pedal division - one pipe per key/pedal. Of course, there are exceptions - my statement above is assuming there are no shenanigans going on with borrowed notes from other ranks, or incomplete ranks that don't span the whole keyboard/pedalboard. On the other hand, in larger organs you can have mixture stops that span more than one rank. Organ builders are a resourceful bunch, that's for sure! No two organs are alike!

Billy, when I saw you sticking that vacuum attachment into the pipe opening I nearly freaked out. That part is where the tuning "plate" is and that plastic pipe could make slight adjustments to it without you knowing.

i am so excited about the prints, especially the one for restoring the ceiling. i have looked at that ceiling so many times thinking how wonderful it would be if it could be restored. i can't think of another purchase i have decided on and made that quickly in my long life. thank you so much, michael.
i'm in awe at how the perfect group of people came together to bring billy's wish to life. it would be wonderful to have it ready for christmas, and to have a little concert with invitations for the church officials from the church that provided it, officials from the town, and all those who worked on the rebuild at your convent along with their family members to attend.
