  • I'm not the best at talking on camera (it just feels weird lol) but I thought I would do a little vid to helpl anyone experiencing similar problems with their 6.9L or 7.3L IDI motors.
    Air in fuel issues, and glow plug issues. I don't go into depth for the sake of time... If you want to know more just ask... or if I'm wrong on something let me know...

    This is exactly the problem I am having.. Engine starts then dies and takes a lot of cranking to re-start. Thanks for a great video!

    I have a 94 7.3 turbo, and I've checked a lot of stuff and i believe that air in the hard lines is what's keeping the truck from running. Preciate the video

    Hey thanks Blackhawk8427 for the very helpful video. I have a 1993 ford f350 diesel truck.i just recently had two straight days where my truck runs rough for a few seconds,then dies. I appreciate you taking it step by step to help me understand my fuel system as my diesel expert buddy with an 03 6.0L powerstroke just tells me oh u have air in ur fuel system, doesnt help me on what to look for or how to fix it. This video helps especially since this is my first diesel truck. Thanks again!!!!!!!!

    Thanks, Dude! I was about to throw in the towel and considered sending it to a shop. After watching your vid I found a leak on my rear injector. After some new O-rings it took some cranking and monkeying with the injector line to bleed the air out but so far its working again. Haven't taken it on the road since it died at the stop sign at the end of the street last, but it seems to be fixed. Just wanted to say thanks.

    Everything you said is true. I had the same problem with mine. Th old ford fuel filter in the side has O rings on the gaskets. I had someone install an aftermarket fuel filter housing. There's no O rings on it like the stock filter. My truck fires up all the time now.

    Ive never had to crank more than 10 seconds if i run out if fuel. Thats what those plugged lines on the filter are supposed to be there for. And ask yourself why is there a schrader there? 1 prime the filter and to prime the system i know im right ive rebuilt mine top to bottom.

    theres a bleeder valve on your fuel filter kinda looks like a valve stem you can bleed it before you shut it off... just get a small needle nose and push it in until fuel squirts out then you can shut it off.... or you can carry diesel fuel in a gatorade bottle (32oz) and take your filter off and refill it and put it on and it will start right up

    Amigo, good vids. Thank you. I just picked up an 87 6.9. Strong runner and doesn't blow smoke, but of course a week after I got it; I'm getting the die after start thing. It always starts and runs the second time. I'm new to 6.9s and my question is this; aside from a little extra wear on the starter from having to crank it again, will this problem get worse? It only does this after sitting over night. And the parking the nose downhill trick seems to help... Do I need to address this right away?

    Blackhawk,
    My 19984 ford f250 diesel recently would not start, it sounds like the problem you described but there is white smoke when it starts. i have only got it to start twice sense it was last day it was running (yesterday), it was running fine then. Also i did run the tank empty on a very old gas.
    thanks

    And is this what you have to do if you take apart the fuel system? And when you put new return lines, O rings? It seams weard that international would make the system only able to bleed air that way.

    I have a problem with a 2.5TD Ford engine, the electromotor spins, but the engine doesn't crank. The van has been sitting on a bench for some years, but I have been starting it from time to time.. I recently bought a new battery and since I got my driver's licence, I thought I'd take it for a spin. It started, yesterday and moved it around a bit, but today isn't starting anymore. All of a sudden it doesn't want to start. Some mechanics started it with spray but dies after stopping the spray. ..?

    I've gone through my 88 7.3L IDI, changed glow plugs, Glow plug wires, mechanical fuel pump, injector pump, injectors and still struggling with hard starts and no start when the motor is warm. No fuel leaks... maybe a fuel shutoff solenoid issue. Lines are bled, but when I did my first and only ether start yesterday, it sounded like I had no fuel. You experience anything like this?

      try pouring some water on the injection pump to cool it. if it then starts, its worn out.

    HELLO I LIVED MY TRUCK OVER 3 YEARS , I TRY STARED 2 WEEK HAGO, CRANCK SOUND GOOD, IS NO AIR IN A FUEL SYSTEM , IS FORD 93 7.3 HERE IS TO HOT (ARIZONA)I NEED CHECK STAR PLUGS ANY WAYS?

  • @dd16v149
    @dd16v149 Před 12 lety

    the easiest way to bleed these idi engines is just have a buddy crank while you hold that schrader valve it sends fuep to all of the iniectors and send air through the return no need to crack injector lines unless its an injector issue. of course unless like yours the return/ check is blocked then theres no purpose thats why they put wm in for easy priming

  • @redshirt489

    I have a 91 F350 IDI 7.3 L under 2500 RPMs the engine dies and I can't get it restarted.I replaced the fuel pump and now it won't start at all but cranks over. Any ideas why this is happening or how to fix it?

    • @smelnyk91
      @smelnyk91 Před rokem

      really only a few things it could be if its somewhat starting at all.... air intrusion in the fuel system (usually return lines/injector lines/fuel filter heater etc) or a worn out and/or leaky IP. this is assuming you have healthy compression. as long as your getting fuel pressure to the IP which you should be if you have a new lift pump id start in those places. also a healthy fuel filter and clean injectors can go a long way

    • @smelnyk91
      @smelnyk91 Před rokem

      oh and IP timing is obviously crucial on these engines obviously and is something to keep in mind as they age as the can retard as they wear and in less common cases can even skip a tooth on the timing gear

    Mr. Blackhawk8427,
    I have a '87 F-250 with a 6.9L IDI. The truck will start excellent when th engine is cold or has not been started in several hours. However, if the engine is warm and I shut the truck off it will not restart until the engine cools off again. Could this be an air in the line problem or what do you think. I have had it at a couple of diesel shops and neither has been able to diagnose the problem or fix it. What do you think?

    what about you truck is running fine and smooth and all then out of nowhere it stalls and you have to w8 for like 20 min before it will start up again after it happens one it will do it all day just put in a new mec fuel pump and electric fuel pump behind it I get 2 big puffs on white smoke and then it just dies 84 F250 6.9 IH
