First Fruit of the Year: June Bearing Strawberries

  • The easiest fruit to grow here in the Philly area. Strawberries. Plant and the rest of the work is harvest. Most reliable crop I have. The only thing that bothers it is the neighborhood groundhog. No threat of a late frost, hardy, early, sends out prolific runners, little disease and insect pressurel.
    June bearers fruit from May 23rd till July. From there my everbearing types pick up the slack and I have fresh strawberries 6 months out of the year. All overall winner.

    Thanks for sharing this video , The best way to git rid of it groundhogs . Try to mix oat meal with plaster of Paris from Home Depot and peanut butter togather. make a balls the size of marbles. After they eat this mixture that makes them feel always full and they go to their apartment full and happy , finally getting Rest In Peace:) never comes.

    Ross, I had success with Gophers using Gonzo Gopher traps that I purchase at Lowes. My garden is clear of gophers for awhile ;)

    Looks delicious mate. I think you should put some straw around it. One rain could cause a lot of damage! Cheers V

      Not a bad idea. Any problems with slugs over there?

      Ross Raddi Yea I’m sick and tiered of them.

    Groundhogs were a big problem for me too. I used the humane traps at first and caught a number of small ones and relocated them, but the big daddy got so angry at getting caught he actually busted his way out. Groundhogs ALWAYS have 2 holes as a backup. Find both holes and completely close up one. At the other, get an emergency flare, light it, and throw it down the hole, then plug up that entrance too. It may very well smother them as it burns up all the oxygen. It didn't work for me, or didn't kill all of them anyway, so I ended up shooting them. I've dispatched 6 of them and hadn't seen any in my yard for 2 years, but I just saw one run across the road from my neighbors yard so now I'm watching to see if it ventures back. Of course, I have a dog now too, so that helps, but when it was a puppy it caught a young groundhog and killed it, though not before first bringing it into the house. What a mess! Good luck! They can wreak such havoc on a garden, especially when you have a whole family of them.

      I had 8 one year! Insanity. They actually have multiple exits. I did think about smoke bombing them, but they'd easily escape.

    Lots of delicious/yummy looking strawberry! What type of soil they prefer? do they need fertilising? what is the species name with the nice taste?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Před 6 lety

      I don't fertilize here or do much to the soil unless it's an annual garden bed. Mulch is the key for all perennials.

    Can u plant them in a pot?

  • @susiesnailhaulsand50plussk97

    I bought some ever bearing actually I have 38 plants and it doesn’t say what strain it is of ever bearing is there anyway you can tell they are nice and hearty looking in the garden they came three in a pack at the nursery do you think I will get fruit this year? I made two separate strawberry patches about 20 feet apart with other With other vegetables in the middle like green bean seeds

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Před 6 lety +1

      If they are everbearing, yes!

  • @susiesnailhaulsand50plussk97

    As far as how they multiply is it good to let them just multiply on their own and send off babies or is it good to trim the baby is the first year or second year or 30 year etc. to get more power for the fruits

  • @susiesnailhaulsand50plussk97

    Does bubblegum kill them or do raccoons eat bubblegum I’m a little confused I never ever ever heard of that in Chicago

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Před 6 lety +1

      Bubblegum is supposed to kill the groundhog. It does not. It's a myth.

    I have a June bearing that starting to flower and I've read and watched CZcams videos that say the first year of growing strawberries you should cut the flowers off what do you think about this? Thank you so much and God bless

    • @animalschannel7544
      @animalschannel7544 Před 3 lety +2

      You can harvest a few but I recommend picking mkst of the flowers to help the plant develop a good root system, and produce good & healthy runners for more plants. You may even get better fruut the following year

  • @ceili
    @ceili Před 6 lety

    How close did you plant them?

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Před 6 lety

      If you want them to fill in an entire area, space them out equally from each other all throughout that space. Otherwise you could plant them literally 2 inches from the other. They'll eventually do that anyway with the new runners they put out after they're done cropping.

    • @ceili
      @ceili Před 6 lety

      Ross Raddi yeah, I spaced mine out according to recommendations I found in a book, but when fully grown there was still a bit of room between each plant. They didn't look anything like yours

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  Před 6 lety

      Figs that have since come up from the base. You can plant them under any tree. They don't mind shade.
