    Regarding birds, I stumbled upon this by accident, but it reduced 90% of bird-eaten fruit:
    Provide clean water within 20 feet. I discovered that the birds were going after the berries for their water content during dry spells. I left a trash can lid with water close by, and magically the fruit were left alone. It wasn't 100% safe like a net, but darn near for zero cost.

    I use red painted rocks in my strawberry patch to great success. I painted a whole bag of river rock, 355 rocks in a 14 foot by 18 foot bed and the birds and squirrels are both put off! I also keep a large mint plant in there and that keeps the squirrels and rats at bay. Right now I am reorganizing things and the rocks and mint plants are displaced. The squirrels are getting in there now. I need to finish so I can get everything back in place! I have actually seen both squirrels and birds disappointed by a red rock in the strawberry patch. 🍓

    • @ninemoonplanet
      @ninemoonplanet Před 3 měsíci +10

    My parents and I grew raspberries last year, and I had heard about painting rocks. It really works! Do it a month before fruit even begins to show. We had squirrels and racoons, and birds chip at the rocks. We started with 9 small red rocks, and by the end of summer there was only two left on our deck, but we enjoyed all our raspberries. If you're growing in raised beds, maybe have an elevated place where you can place the rocks where animals can see it. If not, again, place the rocks VERY early BEFORE the fruits even start. Our only issue were Japanese beetles which ate the leaves, but left our fruit alone. Cheers from /Canada

      Do you have any suggestions for red flowers companion for strawberry’s, to help protect from bugs etc, wife loves red flowers.?

    • @TheNordicfrost
      @TheNordicfrost Před 3 měsíci

      @@dadsrs6019 strawberries don’t really need companion plantings. They grow and spread out fast and they’ll probably smother anything else you plant in a bed. That being said, there are beer traps and whatnot to help if you have slug/earwig issues. If you do decide to plant flowers in the bed, I’d recommend something that grows taller than them. Your local nursery will probably have lots of options and suggestions for that. Nasturtiums tend to crawl around like strawberries. If you give them time to grow a bit first, it might look good intermixed. If you’re planting flowers in a separate bed, the world is your oyster. From tulips, to roses, to perennial wildflowers. Just go online and pick seeds, or to your nursery and pick whatever you think looks, and smell nice.

      Our Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon.
      Matthew 24:7-14
      7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
      8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
      9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
      10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
      11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
      12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
      13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
      14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
      Everything written is happening as you read.
      Revelation 12:1-2
      1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
      2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
      This sign has already appeared in the sky as described in the Bible, this is a warning, the wrath of The Lord is about to be unleashed upon all disobedience. Time is over, repent of your sins, the only way to salvation is Jesus Christ, trust Him have faith in Him.

      26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed.
      27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. ”

    I have Mount Everest, Temptation, Rainbow Treasure and Toscana everbearing strawberries in my back garden in containers and two types of alpine strawberries - Yellow Wonder and red Baron Solemacher growing as ground cover under currant bushes, keeping weeds in check. My pest number one is the slug, really hard to control in wet Northern Irish climate. Great video btw.

    Thanks, Ben, for another helpful video. I had no idea that it was the slugs -- and not the pill bugs--- making the holes. I've only ever seen pill bugs so wasn't treating for slugs. Will definitely plan on the beer traps this year.

    Love the red-rocks tip. I'll give it a try. I've had good luck growing them under pine trees. They like acidic soil and the pine-needle "mulch" keeps the berries off the ground. It solved my slug problem. I've moved and no longer have pine trees, but they're around the area. I doubt anyone will mind if I steal some needles from a park for mulch.

    I'm growing strawberries from seed this year because it's been really hard for me to find plants. It's interesting to me that the everbearing varieties that you can find as seed are completely different types than are commonly sold as plants! I can't wait to see how they taste.

    I grew strawberries from seed last year and they did amazingly - and got lots of fruit as well in the same year. I've never really been a fan of strawberries, but I actually found the ones I grew absolutely delicious - they were a variety aptly named 'Delician' - really recommend giving them a go if you haven't tried them. I've also just ordered some bareroot Strawberry Anablanca 'Snow White' to have a try with - so thanks for the advice regarding planting bareroot. They look very interesting and I'm always tempted by anything that includes pineapple in the flavour profile haha!

    My chickens love those grubs !! I use Ozark Beauties, everbearing. I have two patches. One is next to my garlic and it does the best. I didn't know it was good.
    I use sawdust in the patch. Some say not to but it really works for me. Lots of clay in our soil here so I add sand as well as compot.
    I keep netting around my beds.

    • @GrowVeg

    My grandkids and I painted some rocks bright red (maybe a bit larger than a normal strawberry would be) and decorated them with little black spots like seeds. For two seasons, I have had them in my strawberry patch. Before we added them, I think we had quite a bit of birds helping themselves, but I didn’t notice many damaged strawberries last year. Personally, I feel like it works, but I’m going to add netting just in case this next year since I have brand new plants that have established over winter and I hope to get a nice sized harvest. We also have nice sized bird feeders on the far side of the property, so we are trying to train the wild birds that that’s where we want them to eat. 😂

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  Před 3 měsíci

      I hope the birds take the hint with the bird feeders and leave your strawberries well alone! :-)

    One of the few fruits where the seeds are on the outside of the fruit. I just keep the tops of the berries refrigerated and then place a top slightly buried under seed starting mix, and then I have new plants that I can grow every month or so.

    We grow Everbearing strawberries but our raspberries are 4 Early season and 3 Autumnal Golden raspberries. Super and 3 kinds of Blueberries and 2 kinds of Haskaps.
    Oh I have painted just 3 rocks to look like strawberries. I add them to 3 different strawberries gardens, when the blossoms just start coming out. The birds here have left our berries alone since the advent of painted stones. This year I will paint some Haskaps , as soon I grow my first one and know what it looks like😊

    When you were saying that you find a problem with soil getting out of the pot when wattering the clay pot with holes on sides... When you plant the strawberies I put a fiber (300g/m2) into the pot and make small holes just so i can put throu the strawberie roots throu. And it solved the problem for me + it keeps soil moist longer.
