Leather crafters! Yes, you can fix your contact cement easily. In this video I am using Barge contact cement and Barge thinner.

thanks for the video. one note though, when you have cans like what the thinner comes in its best to pour with opening of the can at the top instead of at the bottom like you were doing. it does not spill out all over the place that way. it is good to see first hand experience in thinning out barge cement, so thank you!

Thank you! I have found that if you are not going to use glue that often keep it in the can and do not use a glue pot. It stays a lot longer without maintenance.

The upside-down storage trick is a nice one, I will definitely start using the method. On a related note, you can release the dried shut cap by heating it up with a hair dryer or a heat gun.
Great advice! Thank you. I stopped using the glue pot entirely, The can keeps the glue so much better.
Put some Vaseline or silicone grease on the threads. Real easy to open the cap.

use a glass beaker, coffee mug size, you won't waste a drop

Try holding the can by the narrow sides so that the wider front will be facing down when you pour. There'll be less of a surge when you pour.

At about 3.08 the picture shows a small silver top sealer thing on the counter. You removed it from the top of the can I assume. If it is left in place on the top of the thinner container, punch a small whole in it with an aul. Then when poured there will be much better control of the amount that can come out. Works for me. :)

Hold the can with the spout at the top rather than at the bottom as you pour it. If you hold it right the liquid will miss hitting the rim of the can on it’s way to the funnel.

Put a dab of cooking oil or grease on the can and cap threads to stop seizing. I take glue as needed per project and have ditched the tub .
I agree! Thank you for the tip! I will start to implement that. I also ditched my glue pot. It was more trouble the a benefit. I always had to treat the glue and I barely have to while in the original container. Thank you!
I would think that thinner would weaken the glue, no?
It does make sense but I think it would take very much thinner to actually weaken the glue to the point that the glue becomes useless. Barge makes the thinner for the purpose of fixing glue that has dried out. With that said, I agree that using to much thinner will most likely decrease the quality of the glue, but it would take a lot. :) Thank you for your question.
You could try with a glass measuring cylinder. Is Barge thinner just like cellulose thinners? Thanks for the video.

From what I understand you can but the barge website recommends that you first test by combining some before you dedicate your hole batch of glue the the thinner. I do know that barge cement does like acetone. I was ready to buy any thinner but when shopping the barge thinner was on sale so I figured that was the best bet but I assume you already have paint thinner. Give it a try and share your experience if you don't mind. Thank you!
Does the glue get a weaker bond as you add more thinner?
So far I have not had that experience. I used the batch of glue I made in the video after adding more thinner to the glue yesterday, today. I would have to assume that if the ratio is leaning way towards the thinner by a large amount it might weaken the glue but I have no evidence or experience of that happening. Thank you for the question. :)
Awesome, i immediately bought a thinner. I tried using alcohol and acetone, it didnt work😂
That's the way to go! I stopped using my glue pot and just use the can now. The glue keep much better for me.
How do you open the can of thinner?
Are you referring to the meddle piece that you see after opening the lid? I actually used that thin file that comes in most finger nail clippers to wedge that part open but that was before I saw how most people do it which is:

To remove the small cap from your paint thinner bottle, you can use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer. First, place the bottle on a stable surface and hold it firmly. Then, insert the flathead screwdriver under the edge of the small cap and gently tap the end of the screwdriver with a hammer. This should loosen the cap and make it easier to remove. I hope this helps. :)

my contact cement got way harder than that pretty solid can that and all come back ? or is it way too gone at that point ?
If it has become like crystal it might be tough to bring back. I have never had to do this test. If you do not mind wasting some thinner I am sure we would all like to know how your experiment goes. Thank you!
@@baronleathercraft i dont think i have thinner at hand but it isn't much really , i put my heat gun on it for a couple minutes and it got soft but not back to liquid
@@locutz That was a good idea. I have a feeling that it is going to take some work and a good amount of thinner restoring the glue. It might be to much effort.
Is that thinner xylene?
The bottle says Ethyl Acetate, Toluene and Heptane. Hope this helped. :)

Sure thing Sarath, just keep adding thinner to the glue and stir it. Let it sit for about an hour or 2 and see if it is how you want it. I hope this helped. Om Shanti. :)
I forgot to tell you that if after you are done the glue is still not as you want it then repeat the process until the glue is how you want it.✌️
