Thank-you Herbert Benson. You have given the world the great gift of the Relaxation Response without charging fees. You will always be remembered.

    This is amazing.
What I like most is he doesn't say 'there's some secret piece that I can't tell you unless you pay me $3,000'.
Knowing what he knows, the way he says other techniques also work is nice to hear.

Don't have to sit cross legged on the floor either - or any of the other things added to 'mystify' the process.

Dr. Benson's technique works as well as any other I have discovered without the monetization that TM is now. RIP Dr. Benson.

Very well said. I paid £35 to learn T.M. Now? upwards of £800. It's a total scam.
I read Dr Benson's book, cost me a few quid and to be totally honest, I much prefer his method. Plus, anyone with access to the internet can learn it for free.

Yes, any kind of meditation will be beneficial and you don't need to pay for it. Conversely, the more that you are being charged, the more you are likely to be ripped off.

Just to add a few comments here as many people are latching on to the 'I shouldn't have to pay for meditation' angle. The answer to that is you don't and you never have. That's the free-market! There are hundreds of meditation techniques out there that will either cost you nothing at all, or a nominal sum, and if that's what you want, then that's what you should go for. There's no point attacking an organisation that charges you for a truly professional service with a lifetime of follow-up across many ,media channels. No-one is forcing you to learn TM.

All stress is created in the imagination. we have learned to use our own intelligence against ourselves ...when I was in practice as a hypnotherapist after a few sessions clients reported a transformation in their stress levels ..by consciously taking their awareness out of their minds and allowing it to settle in peace about 4 fingers below your navel this will centre and ground you,,, no big deal simple straightforward principles our nervous system thrives on ...

Mantras are used as vehicles in the ancient Vedic Tradition. The relaxation response is just the beginning of the effects of transcending. For some time now, we have recorded high Alpha 1 range frequencies when people are practising TM. So let's look at a much wider range of variables before we suggest that there is no difference between the specific instructions given during TM with a prescribed Vedic sound without a meaning, and a phrase personally selected by someone attempting to evoke a spontaneous relaxation response. There are many activities that promote the relaxation response - everything from sitting in sunlight to walking your dog. But these activities, like the "interrupting of the chain of thought" twice a day will have, at best, very marginal influence on the development of your consciousness. You can either pay the money and benefit from TM or you can save your money, and be satisfied with something totally 'bargain-basement'. Your choice!

Profiting from something like this is perverse and completely antithetical to the ethos. I went to a TM centre for a trial, it definitely worked but the centre was in existence to extract a lot of cash from individuals. There are many billionaires in the world, why not, instead, seek to endow the teaching and the distribution of the teaching?

@@benisrood Wherever you are, check your nearest TM centre, and what you will find is that they will bend over backwards to help you learn TM properly at a fee that you can afford and using a payment scheme that best works for you. You weren't expecting to get it free, I assume. As a point of consideration, you should remember your teacher is a fully trained expert and your course fee covers a lifetime of support - an absolute bargain, if you ask me.
