    You did such a nice job filming I thought you had hired a camera man! I'm glad you explained that-I enjoyed your reflective talk, & I teared up a little. You do have so many blessings, a wonderful family, your health, and I am guessing an awesome church family, but I'm pretty sure you bring a lot of joy to a lot of people with your humor, wit, and creativity. Keep inspiring us to get out there & explore!

    Weather can really make a break a hike like this! So much logistics goes into it. We have never been on the North Rim - much greener than the South Rim. No direct sunlight is good when hiking for so long. Awesome that you did that hike with Kayla - happy birthday to her! Fantastic accomplishment Randy, especially given you had just done a similar hike on the South Rim 3 days earlier. Hands down and hat off Sir!

    You are seriously a trooper man! Doing all that strenuous hiking consecutive days in a row really pushes you to the limits.A lot of 21-year-olds can’t even do what you do. I’ve never been to the north rim before but it was really nice to see through your camera. It does seem a lot greener than the other rims. When you were showing the old footage from 2013 and you went back to your current footage you really see the difference in the camera quality over the last five years. Anyways brother thanks for sharing your adventure and congratulations on completing all these grueling hikes

    How much time do you figure filming it adds? And its great that you share your philosophy of "feed the spirit with nature " as I do... Wish I could still hike that much ! It was great when I could ! And maybe I will again, with the help of the Fuzzy one.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 5 lety

      That's a great question. I'd say the filming in general adds about 10% to the time and 5% to increased distance. Obviously, easier to pull this off when I am alone, less exasperating my guests. Hope the health and hiking returns!

    Love the video. I watched the South Rim one first. Very informative. Question. What are you using for a camera? Do you use a selfie stick.... tripod? I have a GoPro but the sound is nowhere as good as yours. Anyway, great job. I'm envious. :-)

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey Ed, thanks for the kind words! Man do I love the Grand Canyon. On both of these hikes I kept the camera gear very simple. I just used my compact Canon SX730HS with the built-in mic. For the tripod I attached the camera to my JOBE gorillapod. Nice and light and was able to put the whole contraption in my pocket. Hope you can get out there, my friend!

    After watching the South Rim, the North Rim although I can imagine it is tough, the weather seemed to work out to your advantage. The sun was not beating down on you as much. Now I have to choose do I want the South or North Rim?

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 5 lety +3

      That's the big question, Bob! Fewer people on the North Rim. I think it's more beautiful, but the South Rim is so iconic! Can't lose with either one!

      Sweet, Michael... nice to have fellow Jersey family on the channel!! Few from our state ever make it past the Poconos! The Grand Canyon is amazing. I believe there is only one campground on the North Rim. Just looked - was in site 34. Enjoy! www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/cg-nr.htm

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 4 lety

      Hey Steven, that general rule holds pretty true. You can probably move a little quicker going down and the final stretch might take slightly over an hour/mile. Sorry, I should have noted my times, but it was a full day. Kind of sunrise to sunset - with about an extra hour on each end.

  • @NationalParksExplorers

    Great video in every aspect! I am curious if you enjoyed the South hike or North Rim hike most? Have you heard that there are now 418 National Park units? Dang - now we have 3 left and triple the driving time. Lol!

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you! Hard to say, IMHO the S. Rim is more iconic and dramatic in the rock formations, but the N. Rim is more peaceful, green and stunning in the colors.

      Americas Parks Trump just added the 418th National Park unit - Camp Nelson Nat’l Monument in Kentucky. We have 4 more units to visit in order to visit all 418 - Camp Nelson, Canaveral, Dry Tortugas and Big Cypress. About 43 people have ever visited all 400+ units. Next project - National parks of the world. Hahaha

      @@NationalParksExplorers That would be an adventurous undertaking! :) Hard to keep up with the additions. I doubt I'll make it beyond 300. At least the last 3 on your list are local. Get to Cypress before the pythons fully take over. :(

      Or add some great state parks! Start with one state and move on! My suggestion: start with one state on each coast, then move on; Utah in the west & Pa in the east (my home state). Coral Pink Sand Dunes would be good start in Utah & Hickory Run (the boulder field) & Ricketts Glen (waterfalls) won't disappoint you. Enjoy & stay safe until the trails reopen.

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 11 měsíci

      Hiking S-N is of course possible, but (as you mentioned) it adds about another 1K feet in elevation so it seems everyone goes N-S. Maybe the shuttle schedule has something to do with it as well???

    • @AmericasParks
      @AmericasParks  Před 5 lety +1

      I'm almost positive that they give only enough permits to be assured that campsites will be available upon arrival. In all my interior GC hikes, I've never made a reservation. Believe it is just "first come first served." Definitely need a permit to camp in the interior of the canyon (as you said). Someone will probably be checking so have it attached to your backpack. Enjoy your hike!!!
