    When you refilled the tank, did you bleed the thermostat?
    They will overheat otherwise cos the engine is taller than the radiator with Commodore V6 engines.

    I'm surprised you / we didn't see any steaming as you were following her home... being that it must have been leaking pretty good. Must be a safety feature to have the car quit when it gets too hot... VW's keep going till the engine seizes! :)

    • @Badgertronix
      @Badgertronix  Před 8 lety

      The rad was empty again by the time we got it home and was steaming away. I was hoping to pull the codes to see if there were any temp related faults. At least with all the rusty water it was easy to see where the leak was!

I cant seem to get knut back into the powersteering plate and the thermo fan piece on the drivers side. its like the bolt is too short. am i missing something here, does the thermo fan have to clip on then add the plate on top so the screw is the correct length? really appreciate any help here

      For these vehicles, a US company called "1320 electronics" (www.1320electronics.com) make scan tools to tap diagnostic info from the ALDL, or GM OBD1 systems. The one I have is bluetooth to use with the phone (android only, the app is called "ALDLdroid"..... the device works fine, but the app can be a little glitchy to get working, but it does work.... pulls codes, and shows good data (fuel trims, maf, O2 sensors, TPS... etc etc), most of the usual stuff that most people need. Works well on my 99' VT Calais.

    Cheers man I’m having similar problems at the moment although the radiator hasn’t shit itself yet. Do both fans come on or one, I notice only the fan on the drivers side starts up not the one on the passenger side. There’s no holes or leak issues and yet while in traffic it’s getting right up to red hot. However when on open road and no traffic she doesn’t overheat. Buggered if I know, and suggestions?

  • @nikkiJ5727

    No way would i be charging battery whilst topping up coolant....an electrical component with fluids, an accident waiting to happen
    Wrong coolant....green coolant for that engine.
    Plus, not way to get air out of the radiator....need to bleed it
    And quite frankly, whether its a hardy engine or not, i wouldn't allow it to get that bad...14 years....nope, my VX generally gets a radiator flush every 12 months.
    I keep up with maintanence...a general service every 6 - 12 months, or any issues that come up, i'm onto it straight away, (especially if it could be a minor issue thats turns into a major issue if left unattended).
    In the 6 years (few months shy of 7 years) that i've owned the car, it's been a good reliable car that has been looked after

    • @wisecampmotorcycles8258
      @wisecampmotorcycles8258 Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah I agree, but his car is a total shitbox, never been looked after. I've had my VS for 20 years. Change My coolant every 5 years, always looks good. Coolant lasts for 7 years, or so it says on the container.

    • @mael-strom9707
      @mael-strom9707 Před 2 lety +3

      @@wisecampmotorcycles8258 Even some of the cheaper green coolants are shit. Make sure a quality green HOAT coolant is used as these engines have aluminium (radiator, rear main seal plate etc), cast iron (block and heads) and brass (heater core) components in the coolant system. Also, make sure the engine is earthed properly as electrolysis can play havoc with dissimilar metal parts.

      @@Badgertronix you also put the wrong coolant in it btw. The 3.8 engines dont use the red coolant. They strictly use green coolant. And the proper way to bleed air out in these engines is with the bleeder screw/valve on the thermostat housing at the front of the motor. You need a flathead screw driver to open it to let the air out while the car is running.
