Terry Kath was a beast. R.I.P.
Fifty years ago. Yeah, I was sixteen. I grew up in the best of times, musically.
Yep, so was I. Saw Chicago 3 times, twice in the 70's and most recently in 2016. Always a great show but it's 2 different bands without Terry Kath.
"Cats" is beatnik for cool people, often musicians. Best. Leo.
Check out this group, "Rare Earth". They were billed as "blue-eyed" soul/rock. They were signed and featured by Motown.
Fantastic band...
Great music can last forever and early Chicago, including this one, will as well.Blues and rock, just amazing!
Just play this whole concert!
Wait?!? Did he just say "you need more cow bell" The force is strong in this one.
I've got a fever!
When Christopher Walken say he is in need of more cow bell......FOR GOD'S SAKES YOU GIVE HIM MORE COW BELL!
@@DiconDissectionalReactions Sorry, wasn't really going for the sketch, but I guess it sorta fits?
Danny Seraphine is a genius on drums. Still has a band today called CTA. California Transit Authority.
Chicago doing a cover of a Steve Winwood song that had already been a hit when he was 15 years old! (good cover!)
With the Spencer Davis Group I think? Best. Leo.
me too you Boomer
Boomer is a badge of honor we actually got to see a lot of these bands this was the sound track of our youth.
Terry Kath. Huge loss. I really didn't care for Chicago after his death.
"Cats" was a nickname for cool guys.
Always liked this tune, they played this live on SNL many many years ago and it ROCKED!!! Great reaction!
This is a cover version of the the song made famous by the Spencer Davis group that featured Steve Winwood on key boards. Chicago Transit Authority's studio version of this song is flawless!
I think "Make me Smile" from this same concert is what you want for the guitar solo.
Wow what a great concert this must have been....so thankful for CZcams! The drummer and Terry Kath certainly knocked it out of the park on this one. Great reaction video @dethstrok9. Im perplexed by your take on some of these songs.... My take would be a bit different but as we all know most great music is open for imputation. Please Please Please keep it going with the live concert and review Chicago's Colour My World(same concert).....Kaths vocals are at its its finest on this song.....on a side note Colour My World was my Mothers and Father ( God rest his soul) wedding song!
I would love to check out Colour my world! What part of my interpretation perplexed you?:)
@@DiconDissectionalReactions I would guess the music has a diffent meaning to me as im much older then you are......I can relate a bit different to the lyrics and music. I do believe on alot of these songs the tone of voice and music is relatable more so if it is something that you have experienced in ones lfe(with all do respect). I do enjoy your perspective on these song as it migh be a different perspective then I might have as all mucis is open to interpretation.
NavinsPurpose what a great profile name. Would this have anything to do with "The Jerk?"
This whole show it looks like they were having a BLAST playing with each other. Watch the whole concert
Still pleasing audiences after fifty years. Mission accomplished.
One of my favorite tunes ♥️♥️♥️♥️
If you haven't noticed, they only have one guitar. So Kath is playing rhythm and lead depending on the situation.
1970 No computers, laptop, or cell phones, no digital anything real musicians/performers a giant well of unique songs written, and everybody had simple fun!
This one of the bands i regret not seeing live
Well, luckily, there is a fair amount of live material out there on CZcams and elsewhere. I saw them three times in concert. First time was around 1973 at the old Boston Garden and Bruce Springsteen opened for them. He had a tuba in the band at the time for some reason. But all we wanted to hear was Chicago. And they do definitely benefit from being heard live. Best. Leo.
Nice reaction that was something you won't see today. I saw them14 times but not Tanglewood only twice with Terry sad what a loss Hendrix considered him his contemporary and said Chicagos brass section played like they had one lung
@@bstb1958 One lung? That's not going to push much air through three horns. Plus, I think two of them would have been dead. Your choice. Seriously, folks, I think I've heard that ascribed quote and it would have been "one set of lungs." Yes, I do understand metaphor. Best. Leo
I was very fortunate to see them live at the Spectrum in Philadelphia
@@imagine1004 I saw them i think it was on Austin city limits on stage together with Earth Wind and Fire it was unreal
this a Spencer Davis Group song cover. Steve Winwood was in that group. Thanks, play Dialogue by Chicago or South California Purples. Good work dude.
I got a fever and the only cure is more cowbell.
Meaning of lyrics:.its about the dangers of losing oneself in a band, love of music, and being in a band
Cats are cool dudes.
Feeling Stronger Everyday, Old Days, Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is, Beginnings, Colour My World, Saturday In The Park, Searching So Long...just to name a few please!!!!
Spencer Davis Group
I don't care what the words mean it's freaking awesome
Written by Steve Winwood Spenser Davis Group. Check out the original and So glad We Made It. Great times great music🎹🎶🎸
If you require a next level Terry Kath solo, check out Poem 58 from Chicago Transit Authority album. Pretty sure they play it at Tanglewood as well but you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't experience studio version first. Enjoy!
Down right tribal, makes my 67 year old hips move. Great outdoor concert song. Saw then live in 1971, I'm still amazed!
It was written in the mid 60's by Stevie Winwood when he was 15. Watch the YT of The Spencer Davis group. Stevie was the keyboard player, then went off to form Blind Faith with Eric Clapton when Cream broke up. Then he joined Traffic, then was dissolusioned with the music industry for a while then came back in the late 70's for a solo career.
You have a long road. I started listening to what you are “ discovering “ at 10.
I am 64 and still enjoying.
Love your enthusiasm
Good luck
I was in college.....brings back so many memories.
More Chicago please
Terry Kath was a beast on that guitar Hendricks called him the best he ever heard
FYI @5:50-5:60, In the 70's they use the slang 'cat(s)' for a male person(s).
Back in the ‘50’s Men were referred to as “Cool Cats”. (He’s a Cool Cat, Man!) it was a complement. SanJoseBob
The best of the very best right there.....
Terry & Peter rockin' out, then the whole band takes their shots !✌😎
For some of the later studio, stuff check out Daligoue Pt I&II ( for the lyrics alone and check the various isolated versions for the power trio stuff under the horns) Takin It Uptown, Ain't it Blue, and maybe Oh Thank You Great Spirit for more Kath goodness.
"More Cowbell!"
I don’t know who said it, but it has stuck with me for years…. Terry Kath - the hands of Hendrix with the voice of Ray Charles.
Steve winwood wrote snd performed this song with the spencer davis group when he was 17 years old.
Someone asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like being the best guitar player in the world. Jimi, always humble, replied - I don't know you'll have to ask Terry Kath.
You should also listen to the studio version
Cat is like Dude.. In Chicago's/Jimi Hendrix early days, Jiimi hendrix saw them play. He was quoted as saying Terry kath was better than he was. Jimi invited the to go on tour with him. They accept and went. They talked about collaborating on a project, which did not happen. T Kath died from a self inflicted gun shoot wound, he was drunk/ high. He was a gun guy. He insisted the gun was empty, he put to his head... died.
Check out the studio version
Terry Kath - respect.
Stevie W ...... wrote this
This is a rare cover from them . Spencer Davis Group with Steve Winwood did this originally. You should listen to Ballet for a girl from Buchannon, from this concert. You will get the full flavor of the group. It is a suite of songs that has Colour My World in it.
Old blues tune, I first became familiar with it back in 65 when the British Invasion bad Spencer Davis with Steve Windwood recorded it. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😎👍✌️❤️ Dude don’t try to analyze the lyrics too much...it was a different space in time. Cats are people that are cool.
Not an old blues tune, it originated with the Spencer Davis Group. There IS an old blues tune with the same name.
The Muddy Waters "I'm A Man" and Steve Winwood's "I'm A Man" are completely different songs that in no way could be confused with each other. This is the Spencer Davis Groups "I'm A Man" written by then 16 year old vocalist/keyboardist Steve Winwood.
more cowbell!!!
This song was about how HE felt he needed to act. How HE felt was appropriate for HIM. Let's not extrapolate every song onto every person.
It's a Muddy waters song I think they may have gotten the idea from that recording and put their own spin on it
I think the Spencer Davis Group did this 1st but it is still good 👍
When Pankow yelled “keep it going” I believe it was the encore number. It was when I saw them in ‘72.Don’t overthink the so called meaning of the lyrics. There was none.Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. The CTA version kills the original
The whole first album , Chicago Transit Authority is among the best albums of all time! Beginnings, Questions 67 and 68 among others are out of this world!👍🏻❤️☮️
To think Tanglewood is only an hour from my home as a child... Unfortunately I was in elementary school and oblivious to the history being created just around the corner...
TERRY KATH (RIP) is a guitar beast. even the late Jimi Hendrix said that Terry is a much better guitarist than he is.
RIP Terry
The lyrics make a lot more sense when you realize it's a 15 year old imagining what it's like to be a man (Hair on my face and I pay the rent).
Our future is in good hands the young are reacting to great music.
Try "The Small Faces" featuring "P.P. Arnold" = "Tin Soldier".
I think you would really enjoy the double live album Chicago at Carnegie Hall. Maybe the best live album ever.
It was 4 albums
I wish you had listened to the studio version of this song first so you could hear a clean version. Do that, then check out the cover done by Leonid & Friends (a group of Russian musicians who recreate excellent versions of Chicago songs!).
Song meaning cats=dudes Me meh, cats=cats
How did you listen to, and then read the first verse and chorus, yet still completely miss the meaning?!?
If you think this guy is good on the guitar, check out Stevie Ray Vaughn live performing Texas Flood
I did, it got blocked.
@@DiconDissectionalReactions what did you think of Stevie Ray Vaughn doing Texas Flood live?
@@Kennthpassanisi8139 I put the video up on patreon.
I thought it was incredible, and when he begins playing behind his back... Well, that was game over. Insane skills, he was taken way too soon.
@@DiconDissectionalReactions I've seen him play and do that live! I'm 58 yrs old. I've never seen anyone play like that before or since. He's definitely a once in a lifetime phenomenon! And don't forget that he playwith 13 gage strings on all his guitars! That's insane! It's like piano strings on a guitar! I know that I'm exaggerating. But that's what it felt like when I tried 13 gage myself. And remember that he couldn't read or write music! He truly played from his heart!
I was 18 when this came out. LOL.
I would just like to point out masculinity is a good thing, at least in men.
forget about the lyrics, when doing live gigs m8 cheers, good job pops.
lick lick
or groupies.....
Not professional prostitutes, think groupies - young women who’d do anything to get a band member’s attention.
Try the original recording. This is good, but.......
Sorry, i still prefer the original by Spencer Davis Group with the 16 year old Stevie Winwood singing
Abd on this the percussion was out of sync. For criss cross rhythm “Woyaya” Osibisa.
This is a man talking to a woman. That's all it is.
Holy crap what a bad take on a great song. I get that you have a problem identifying with this song but the issue is with you not the song.
Hated it! The studio version is in my top 10 songs of all time - this sounded like 10 musicians each trying to drown the others with high volume. Maybe I'm too sober to be fooled.
