      Your right, I seen a piece of rail on a steel work bench in a repair shop, they used it as the shop anvil. That piece of rail took a beating and it stayed solid.

    Not surprised that shredder didn't stand a chance. Rails have some of the highest grade steel in them. The process for welding them together is insane.

    I had an eight inch long rail track off cut for years, (gained when i worked for British Rail), it was the perfect anvil, used for all sorts of jobs, lost alas during the last move. It was the hardest thing i had come across and knew it would beat that machine that could just about mince a plastic washing up bowl.

      Well it is designed to take multiple hundred ton trains several times a day for several years. It literally takes one of those trains derailing to snap these rails.

    I wouldn't expect a rail which will supports over 125 tons of diesel locomotives and heavily loaded freight cars over 20 times a day to get eaten like that other stuff. Clearly beyond the limit of this shredder.

      Nevermind that, for some reason, I think rail tracks are bigger, wider and heavier. But for some reason this person grabs it like its nothing. I think that what he is putting in there is probably a rail track from a smaller vehicle. Maybe from an amusement park?

      Yep. I'm betting that if the rail got fed into the shredder enough times, the smaller surviving chunk of rail would eventually reach a stalemate with the shredder because the teeth would be too wrecked to do any further damage. It wouldn't be worth it to take it that far.

      I thought it was made of aluminum at first. Because he was moving it around way to fast and easy one handed. I have steel i-beams I do random projects with that are skinner than that in various lengths, they are heavy as hell.

    If you look closely, you can see that individual shredder elements suffer damage over time. It would be interesting to know how much damage and whether individual wheels needed to be replaced after the train track was thrown in.

      There are some cheap chinies colt 45 1911 hand guns that are made out of recycled railroad tracks.. Most gun smiths refuse to work on them depending the work needed because they are so hard. Hard on the tools used to work on the gun

    Small machine, we tip at recycling lives in Preston. They have a massive shreader that takes whole cars and large metal beams without any problems. They process about 60 tons a day, chipped then put into containers for shipping.

      Most of the shredders like the one you mention and that are used by autorecyclers are of a different design. They rotate sets of free hanging hammers (each hammer usually weighing 400 - 1250 lbs) that are fastened at their inner end to heavy round plates that spin at least several hundred times a minute. There's one of these, a rotary hammermill, at a steel/slag dump on lake Michigan with a set of 2200 lb hammers. Imagine those hammers spinning in a 10 ft diameter circle several hundred times a minute?
