The general public didn't know much about autism in the '80s. This movie both helped and hurt awareness of the condition since for years autism only conjured up imaged by Dustin Hoffman's performance in this movie

Yeah, I have autism but I'm nothing like this character, the 2 most annoying things people do is they assume you're a genius or they're extremely patronising and talk to you like a child.
My biggest issues are sudden loud noises (I don't scream or anything, but I'll have to stop what I'm doing for a while), and the concept of money is confusing for me, physical money I can understand value with but digital money I can't, so I have to withdraw physical cash when paying for things

Yes I agree but I wouldn't blame the movie. It's people's limited perception beyond what we're shown. There’s the part where the lawyer is explaining the fathers will and how Charlie will only get the car and the rose bushes. Hey Camilla. My fiancee works for a local school district. She basically does what you do in an educational setting. She helps educate MUCH lower-functioning autistic and other special needs children to help increase their level of functionality and socialization.
A lot of these kids come to her extremely frustrated or violent and most of them are unable to speak. It warms my heart every time she tells me one of her students finally got to go into mainstream education with the other kids. It just proves that such children CAN be helped. And my beloved darling is the one who was gifted with the ability to help them.

Hey, keep in mind when this movie came out in 1988, there wasn't much known about autism. In fact, this movie introduced was so many people's first introduction about it.
It was a totally different world. No internet, no cell phones. In fact, phones were wired. Everyone in a household shared a line. TV's were smaller, but way heavier. And .00001% of people had any idea was autism was back then.
But as someone (me) that has autism who was alive in 1988 and wasn't still diagnosed, I watch the world around me change and be more aware of what autism is slowly throughout the 90's before being diagnosed myself because I would see chrematistics of what learned about autism in myself.

Hey CAmilla. You're meant to hate Tom Cruise (Charlie) at the start of the movie so when he goes through his character arc and learns to take care of his brother you feel the weight of the story.
Especially when Charlie finds out that Raymond is actually The Rain Man is the imaginary character from his childhood. Such a heartfelt moment, it breaks my heart every time I see it.

It's interesting that throughout the movie I see Charlie more unstable overall and prone to emotional outbursts but because those outbursts are more commonly accepted and normalized he comes across as more "normal". Whereas Raymond' s outbursts label him mentally challenged because we can't relate to his specific triggers. The thing is Raymond can't relate to what Chalie's triggers any more than Charlie can relate to his so the only thing really that separates the two is what emotional state we perceive to be more acceptable even though Charlie's life is much more destructive and unstable than the life Raymond lived in the home. Funny how we judge others in life when we can't even imagine how someone might see ourselves.

Raymond is based off from a guy named Kim Peek. He can read a book with the left eye reading the left page and the right eye reading the right page at the same time and then put them together in his brain. He has read an entire library of books. There is a documentary about him on youtube and you can see that huge library room full of shelves stacked with books that he has read. He can quote back word for word what they say for I think they said 95% of them or something like that. He has an amazing brain, but his ability to do basic tasks is considerably affected. Like most savants, he is brilliant in a lot of things, but horrible at basic things. Also, I think Dustin Hoffman spent a considerable amount of time with him to pick up his mannerisms for this role.

When Charlie said that Raymond was living in his own little world, that statement isn't far from the truth. That was really a nice way of putting it, since people with ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) generally have a developmental disability in their brains which affects how they interact socially, or have hyper-acute sensitivity to sounds: they just process information differently than others. In today's modern diagnosis of ASD, Raymond would likely be classified as PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified). I have a nephew with autism, and proudly wear a blue puzzle piece pin. As he would say, "Autism is not a disability it's a different ability".

I still have the soundtrack of the movie on audio cassette that I bought at Sam Goody brand new in 1988 at the Frontier Mall in Cheyenne Wyoming. The 1980s were some of the best years of my life to this day something about the music how the world was back then somewhat technology free life was better then it is today.

  • @christopherbaldwin2005

One of my wifes brother's had a learning disability when born. His mom had scarlet fever when she was pregnant with him. He was a grown man when I married my wife. He lived in a Group Home setting. Every Sunday, my wife and I would pick Dan up and bring him out to his parent's house for the day. There were times I can remember feeling so bad for him. In his 30's he got an eye infection and kept rubbing, until the eye had to be removed. Then the other eye, till he was blind. Until the day he died he would say "Love mommy". It sometimes seems life is cruel to so many, and kind to so few. We need more kind soul's, like yours.

If you listen to the DVD commentary for the movie, they discuss how even though the story is totally fiction, the Raymond character was actually based on a real person and the writer said that there were many things the real man could do that weren't included because they were so impressive, it would've made the movie feel like sci-fi.
One of the things he mentioned was how he could speed read 2 books simultaneously. One book with each eye.
The real mans name was Kim Peek
