I love how Charlie's "Yes you are" in response to "I'm an excellent driver" is what prompts Raymond to touch his forehead to Charlie's. Every other time he's said "I'm an excellent driver," Charlie has pretty much ignored him. But now Charlie gives him validation, the same kind that their dad probably did on his visits to Wallbrook, and Raymond shows his gratitude and love without words.
Unless the director reacted amazingly to this “off-script” moment and panned in perfectly for a zoom-in close up, there is no way in hell that head touch was improvised.

Charlie and Raymond both show their character development in this brilliant, beautiful scene. Charlie shows a compassion and selflessness that he never had at the beginning of the film; he's learned to love Raymond and put his needs before his own. And there are little moments all throughout the scene that show Raymond's love for Charlie. Initially, Raymond does not like touching anyone or being touched; Vern says he has never touched him in the many years they've known each other. But here, not only does he allow Charlie to sit close to him, rub his back, and kiss his forehead without a single complaint or flinch - indicating that he feels safe with Charlie and trusts him - he INITIATES contact for the first time by touching his head to Charlie's, the only way he's able to say "I love you" to his brother. And at the end, he calls Charlie his main man and spells his name just like he did with Vern, indicating that Charlie has replaced Vern as his main man. Dr. Bruner and Charlie are both right in the end; Raymond is more comfortable and safe living at Wallbrook, but he indeed made a strong, deep connection with Charlie that will last the rest of their lives. What a beautifully written and acted scene in a magnificent film. Bravo.
These two actors played an absolutely exceptional role. This scene made me cry my eyes out. It was so sweet seeing Charlie come around and actually love his brother. I just can't put into words the emotion i feel
People comment about this movie as though it is not a film but a newsreel event; real. The talent that both main actors who lead this heartbreaking tale possess is beyond amazing. Dustin Hoffman seemed to not act; rather, he "became" Ray. He must have studied intensely for this part, but even meeting and observing other savant sufferers cannot allow the viewer to think that Mr. Hoffman did not immerse his entire soul into this film. His portrayal is more than flawless. Dustin "is" Raymond. Likewise, Tom Cruise played off his part in near perfection, as first the outraged left out son and then to breaking beyond the past to learn to appreciate and most of all love his brother. I cannot imagine another pair of actors who could have been more emotionally in tune with one another and the plot of this film. Although the movie is somewhat based on a real condition, Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman will be forever after synonymous with the term "Rain Man." A heartbreaking and inspirational event made real by a group of fine actors. Unforgettable.

This is a very touching scene. I can't stop crying. I have an older brother with autism too. And I feel awfully bad for mistreating him for all these years. :' (
I am an aspie and did not realize until I was an adult, growing in an abusive house and trying to figure out who I am while looking after my younger siblings, now I am the father of 2 lovely girls which even if I did not know the true meaning I am sure I love completely I am always telling them that I might have no idea how they feel or where they are most of the time but unlike the people I grew up with I dont want them to feel they cannot tell me, patience and trust me, if someone like me or Ray tells you "I love you" or you ask someone like me and he/she says yes, trust me, that person mean it
My older brothers autistic. Ive never heard him talk. My sister nd parents used to tell me about it, his voice. Now being older, i would give anything to hear his voice just once. I want him to tell me about evrything ppl did to him, and i would do anything to give him the justice he deserves. Heres to you, mike.

@epicfail23 I disagree. Charlie was alone for many years, he had no one. His mother died when he was a baby And his father treated him terribly. He learns he has a brother he didn't know existed. He doesn't know how to react to it but the scene in the bathroom opens his eyes slightly in that he's not alone anymore. And he begins to feel something real for the first time in his life. That's huge character development
+Dorian Tisato But that's According to "The Movie" The REAL Rain Man's Name was "KIM PEEK" He Lived In Salt Lake City, Utah" There's a Documentary here on CZcams about him. THE TRUE STORY He was Like a Living "GOOGLE" , Before Google that is " You ALL Should Watch it. I live down Near St.George Utah In the Lower Left hand Corner of the State of Utah.
Outstanding performances from the two leads, but for me Cruise is the stand-out for his portrayal of the extraordinary development of his character. If this scene doesn't make you cry, you need to check your pulse.
gotta admit, there was so much simplicity in this scene but i cried, it really shakes you up and Dustin laying his head on Tom's as a way to express himself really showed how much he grew around his brother. Incredible stuff right there. Forgot to say this but the score for this movie was incredible! Hans Zimmer really nailed it.
Whoever bashes Tom Cruise should watch this movie, and pay attention, especially to this scene. Classic movie magic--very touching, and sad, but yet, Hollywood. Hoffman was amazing in this as well, throughout the entire film. Couldn't believe that initially they wanted Jack Nicholson or someone else to play Charlie. Just wouldn't work, man.
My g/f watched this last night with me and she actually cried during this scene. It's one of the greatest scenes in movie history if you just pay attention
the end of scene of brothers seperated kind of has a godfather 2 undertone when tom cruise is looking out the window and then looks back at his brother raymond kind of similar to the michael fredo scene when michael disowns his brother fredo BRILLIANT SCENES
What made this scene even more touching is that Dustin Hoffman put his head on Cruise’s head. That’s not in the script. He knew that’s what he would do as a character. Thanks Mr. Hoffman!

This scene never fails to touch my heart. As the back cover of the film said: “What began as an unsentimental act of rebellion became a journey of self discovery that expanded the narrow confines of Raymond’s world, and allowed Charlie to grow beyond the limits of his own hardened heart.”
the best part. Two fantastic actors. Had to be these two ..no others would have done. And this scene amazingly touching. Sponatneous from both. This part was not in the script and yet it was the defining moment of the movie. Kills everytime.
I have a brother who is higher functioning than Ray and I have Aspergers. This scene always gets to me. Because I couldn’t imagine being in Charlie’s shoes in this scene.

He became his mainman, thats how he expressed his affection for his little brother. This movie is so heartwarming.
🥲😭

I actually cried my eyes out at this part - 'my main man'
Me too 😭
When Rain Man rests his head against Charlie's head, that was unscripted. Dustin Hoffman improvised that gesture in the heat of the moment. 😭
not sure if anyone knew, but this was done in one take and Hoffman went off script putting his head on Cruise. Epic
oh my god,are you 100% sure, thats epic scene when he put his head on tom, changes movie a lot
definitely omg
love can cure anything that's the message
There’s no way the head thing wasn’t scripted.

One of the finest scenes in cinema history. Great movie!
The music played during the scene adds to the emotion right before Ray places his head on Charlie's. My eyes well up on this one.
You are soooo right
The young Hans Zimmer really got the scene. He nailed it. Absolutely breathtaking.

I watched this the other day and my god tom cruise performance is epic
this such an emotional scene, he loves his brother more than anything and must let him stay in facility that takes away his freedom
most powerful scene that shows brothers love. By far.
I think the best movies in the world are the ones that feel human and heartfelt and earnest - this is one of them
One of the few movies which can make a grown man cry, the climax part hits hard tho😭
Signs of a great movie: great plot, acting and character development or growth in film. Outstanding film this scene especially.
My favorite scene of all movies.
Such an emotional scene... The music is so great....
When Hans Zimmer's music hits in this scene, I get chills.
This scene made me a lump in muy throat , muy favorito without a doubt , ThE greates love of al, love of brothers

Totally agree, this and the bathtub scene choked me up...what a great movie
I'm different and people have treated me differently because of it.
This scene is SO intense.
Cry every time.

Wires crossed wrong or not, the soul prevails.
To Charlie, Raymond was Rain Man. To Raymond, Charlie was Rain Man. Great Movie
No, to Raymond Charlie is main man
The scene where Ray lean his forehead on Charlie's makes me bawl every single time.. Its very effective in touching the audience.

Beautiful

loved this scene
I have a brother who is higher functioning than Ray and I have Aspergers. This scene always gets to me. Because I couldn’t imagine being in Charlie’s shoes in this scene.
C-H-A-R-L-I-E..... main man.
PROBABLY THE BEST SCENE EVER... SO REAL!
