I love seeing all that old footage and I couldn't agree more, whoever did the editing on that was incredibly talented. By the way, this is not the only one of this type of video, and you know some people use their towns for good others not so much. This video I have bookmarked with the name brain bleach, and I save it for those little moments when somebody goes off the rails. You know how in the old movies, someone would get hysterical, and then someone would slap them? That's what this video is, or at least that's how I use it. I think it's awesome, I have no idea where the video footage came from, but I think it's hysterical. But it's one of those things that it's like a train wreck, you can't look away, so for that brief moment it's all you can think about and it will disconnect you from whatever it was that you were raging about. There's an iconic moment in this video. Shirley Temple dancing on the stairs with Bill Bojangles Robinson - the first onscreen interracial dancing. It wasn't written that way. Robinson was supposed to show her the steps and then she was to do them alone. It was Temple herself - little, but already a seasoned professional - who insisted they do it together. She knew it would make a much better scene - and saw nothing wrong with holding hands with Bojangles. She was a trailblazer.

I actually find it easier to dance ballroom in 2 inch heels than flats. Concentrating my weight on the balls of my feet helps me move and pivot smoother. A little thicker heel was used back then though which is what I use. Not as pointy as modern heels.

If you are referring to the jump off the balcony into the splits those were the 3 Berry Brothers. Nicholas Brothers did the splits over each other down the stairs.

The editor of this video deserves an Oscar! The dancing on the wall is from "Royal Wedding". The room actually revolved 360 degrees along with the camera, so that Fred Astaire was able to dance up the wall, across the ceiling, and back down to the floor on the other side. The technique has been used in several music videos.

The camera had to revolve with the room in order for the floor to remain at the bottom of the screen and the ceiling to remain on top. The projector showed exactly what the camera had seen, which was the room appearing to be stationary. If the camera was fixed and the room revolved, it would be obvious that the room was moving. The ceiling would end up on the bottom of the screen and the floor would appear on top. Does the room look like it's moving to you?. I have a B.A. in Cinema and Film Production which I also taught. We studied this sequence in Filmmaking 101. I usually try to be tolerant, but right now I'm too tired and stressed to put up with this nonsense from someone who obviously doesn't have a clue! Use your common sense, if you have any!

This dance/song video has been one of my top five favorites of all time. It entertains, creates nostalgia, while it produces a modern song no one could help but love.
These clips were from the time when entertainers had actual, appreciable talent!! And they worked on their craft. Tons of people back then did the same kind of acts, but the ones edited into these clips were at the very top of the game (I can name most people in the clips because...well, not that I'm old, but let's just say that I've seen a few things). No autotune, no CGI, but actual, genuine talent and lots of practice. Those were the days we may never see again, but its great to see it appreciated now, even if for only 6 minutes.
Dancers back in the day weren't just amazing dancers. They were amazing athletes too. They couldn't have done half the moves in those routines otherwise.
And let's keep in mind, a lot of these folks were ALSO great actors AND singers as well. Vaudeville created A LOT of acts like that. To succeed back in those days, you couldn't be a "one trick pony". You had to be multifaceted AND multi talented.

When he saw another viral mash-up featuring 100 movie dance scenes paired with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” he knew he wanted to do the same- but only with movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. While Binder didn’t quite make it to 100, he did make it to 66, and none of the movies have been sped up or slowed down to match the song, and none of them were made after 1953. What follows is an amazing result, a magical movie montage that proves classic song-and-dance women and men have just as much - if not more - rhythm and talent as anybody acting, singing and dancing today.
Can you imagine how many dance moves this producer had to see to get it all fit together perfectly. What a genius! The Fred Astaire scene where he is dancing on the side walls was done by having a cube room created with all furniture bolted down and then they rotated the box as he danced on the walls and ceiling.
The sequence I love the best is at 4:17 The timing of the couch drop is PERFECT! That's Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds (mom of Carrie Fisher) and the incredible Gene Kelly in the movie "Singin' In The Rain". The song is "Good Morning". Kelly is in several of the clips in this video, he's the guy with the mouse too!

This is my favorite video on CZcams. I love it not just because I love old musicals and movies back in the day but because this was so well done. The editing is incredible and on beat with the song but also the grouping of the dances being done. If you watch the video as many times as I have, which is a lot LOL, you can tell that they put together dance scenes with dancers that are dancing on tables, dancers dancing with canes. Dancers dancing on stairs, dancers spinning, dancers hopping and big groups dancing as well as the dancing styles like tap dancing, ballet etc. These are grouped together one dance scene after the other then it moves on to a different style of dance grouped with scene after scene of that style. I never get tired watching this video. 😁
If you want to read an AWESOME autobiography......'Child Star' by Shirley Temple-Black. One of my favorite books. She literally saved Hollywood & the industry during the great depression. And she WAS just that innocent little girl in REAL life too. She tells so many stories about what it was like from her perspective.....about that Golden Age. Including Bill Bojangles.
Fred Astaire's dancing on the ceiling scene was from _Royal Wedding_ and it made use of a camera which was bolted to the floor, but *the entire room* was built in a rig which allowed it to rotate. So, from the perspective of the camera, Fred went from dancing on the floor to dancing on the wall, then the ceiling, then the other wall, and then back to where he started. To sell the illusion, all the fixtures were designed to stay in place - though there was a chair which had been set up to allow him to move it before he started dancing (to really sell the illusion that everything was "normal" about the room). It's a very clever gag, and yes, other artists have used it or something similar over the years since then.
When I first saw this, I must have watched it a dozen times in a row. Massive editing skills. With each watch, I picked out more and more actors and just loved every second of it. I still enjoy it just like I did watching it the first time.
Yes! And fits the mood of the different parts of the song so well, from Gene Kelly & Jerry Mouse being very cool during the breakdown to Ginger Rogers getting completely in the zone for "Girls hit your hallelujah".
I've seen several dance compilations like this, but this is definitely one of the best-edited I've ever seen! Kudos to the person who put this together!!

He always seems weightless. Even though the moves are physically challenging, he is deftly effortless; like floating on air. So fun to watch him perform.
My favorite of the men. Gene Kelly was close though. Fred had more songs he sung that I really liked. I also loved the Rogers & Astaire films. I think Fred's first role, or kinda major role was "Dancing Lady" with Gable and a dancing Crawford. Joan Crawford was a dancer before an actress.

I mentioned Astaire's "hat rack dancing" & "ceiling dancing," but Gene danced with a broom - or rake -, I believe, in "Summer Stock," and when he danced with Tom and Jerry (as mentioned by someone above, not taking credit...not trying to draw ire). The Pirate was a cheesy Judy/Gene/Vincent Minelli film but I really enjoy it. Although I prefer "Easter Parade" with Astaire - over "Summer Stock" - and his movies with Rita and the Fred & Ginger movies. Enjoy you guy's day!
There’s a lot of my favorite Rita Hayworth. Her and Fred worked together a lot. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, the amazing Nicholas Brothers. My MamMaw gave me such a love of the 40s. They were poor but could sew! Four sisters that would sketch the dresses and make copies another sister learned all the hairstyles. I have a photo of my grandparents leaving Antione’s in NOLA dressed to the nines. There last night out before he left for WWII. I also have been very impressed with that channel. That’s some amazing editing.

That was the great Fred Astaire dancing up the wall onto the ceiling and back down. Yes he was first. That was from the movie Royal Wedding about 1951.
Yup, it was a marvel in its day. There was no CGI or optical illusions and a lot of people couldn't figure out how they did it. They built the set on a rotation device. Once you know this you can see how all the dance moves accompany the rotation.
@@LilFisch1174 Absolutely. I'm sure they had to custom build a device for this, they couldn't just mount a set onto an existing one. When you think about the lengths they had to go to to make everything look completely natural, it's amazing. They nailed down the furniture, the pictures on the walls had to be affixed, the same with the chandelier and the lamps (and the wires that plugged into the walls) the drapes couldn't move, nor could the hat stand and the hat on it, etc. It was an engineering and filming wonder, it really looked like he was dancing on the walls and ceiling. The first time I saw this as a kid I was in awe.

Fred Astaire originated the dancing on the walls and roof, seemingly upside down. Astaire (with his partner Ginger Rogers) was the premium, dancer, again with Giner who did the same moves, but in heels, in 1930-1945 cinema. Gene Kelly (who danced with Jerry the mouse) was also a premium dancer from 1938 to 1966 (Xanadu anyone?) But in the days of the great movie musicals, everyone had to know how to dance--Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford, etc. I love the Nicolas Brothers (3 brothers who jumped from heaven and did a split). Anne Miller was a classic tap dancer (yellow and black ensemble), and Cyd Charise was the ultimate in glamour and sexiness. Really, watch "Singing in the Rain," (Debbie Reynolds early picture), and "That's Entertainment," narrated by Gene Kelly and showing all the best of movie musical dance. And yes, whoever edited this video to Uptown Funk is a genius. Bravo!
@@why1itsme I can remember that when I was a child/teenager (in the UK) they'd show old films on a Saturday afternoon on BBC2, quite often they were musicals and not only the blockbuster ones but some of the less well-known ones. It's a real shame that they stopped doing it as it was also how I developed a love of old B&W movies too.
A hidden gem in here -- the lady in pink with the whip at 4:48 is arguably the biggest star on this video. It's Lucille Ball, the most famous comedienne of the 20th century. The scene is from 1945's "Ziegfield Follies", & she's a mid-tier actress at that point. Six years later she starred in "I Love Lucy" & her career exploded.
While the Nicholas brothers were the most athletic, and Gene Kelley was smoother than silk, Fred was so in touch with his surroundings that inanimate objects looked and felt like intimate, articulate, and willing dance partners. But don't forget, all of those guys owed a huge debt to the inventiveness and self-awareness of Mr. Bojangles.

Films like these were banned in the South. I had an amazing film history class and it covered all of these issues.

Tons of people back then did the same kind of acts, but the ones edited into these clips were at the very top of the game (I can name most people in the clips because...well, not that I'm old, but let's just say that I've seen a few things). No autotune, no CGI, but actual, genuine talent and lots of practice. Those were the days we may never see again, but its great to see it appreciated now, even if for only 6 minutes.

This person who put the video together is pure genius.
Dancers back in the day weren't just amazing dancers. They were amazing athletes too. They couldn't have done half the moves in those routines otherwise.
And let's keep in mind, a lot of these folks were ALSO great actors AND singers as well. Vaudeville created A LOT of acts like that. To succeed back in those days, you couldn't be a "one trick pony". You had to be multifaceted AND multi talented.
The 'Old Movies Stars Dance' comes to us from the movie-loving brain of Michael Binder, author and film preservation proponent. When he saw another viral mash-up featuring 100 movie dance scenes paired with Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” he knew he wanted to do the same- but only with movies from the Golden Age of Hollywood. While Binder didn’t quite make it to 100, he did make it to 66, and none of the movies have been sped up or slowed down to match the song, and none of them were made after 1953. What follows is an amazing result, a magical movie montage that proves classic song-and-dance women and men have just as much - if not more - rhythm and talent as anybody acting, singing and dancing today.

Imagine sitting down with one of the only living legends of that genre...Dick Van Dyke. Still alive and dancing at the young age of 98.
Can you imagine how many dance moves this producer had to see to get it all fit together perfectly. What a genius! The Fred Astaire scene where he is dancing on the side walls was done by having a cube room created with all furniture bolted down and then they rotated the box as he danced on the walls and ceiling.
The sequence I love the best is at 4:17 The timing of the couch drop is PERFECT! That's Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds (mom of Carrie Fisher) and the incredible Gene Kelly in the movie "Singin' In The Rain". The song is "Good Morning". Kelly is in several of the clips in this video, he's the guy with the mouse too!
Debbie Reynolds had never danced before being in this movie.
One of my favourite films of all time. It is five years older than my dad, but it still works so well. Always a good choice when life has been a bit hard on you lately.

You can sense that in an impromptu scene near the end of the movie. Cagney’s Cohan is walking down a marble staircase at the White House when he suddenly starts tapping and improvises all the way to the bottom. Cagney later said he dreamed that up five minutes before the scene was shot: “I didn’t consult with the director or anything, I just did it.” (Geoff Fox article 2010)

This is my favorite video on CZcams. I love it not just because I love old musicals and movies back in the day but because this was so well done. The editing is incredible and on beat with the song but also the grouping of the dances being done. If you watch the video as many times as I have, which is a lot LOL, you can tell that they put together dance scenes with dancers that are dancing on tables, dancers dancing with canes. Dancers dancing on stairs, dancers spinning, dancers hopping and big groups dancing as well as the dancing styles like tap dancing, ballet etc. These are grouped together one dance scene after the other then it moves on to a different style of dance grouped with scene after scene of that style. I never get tired watching this video. 😁

If you want to read an AWESOME autobiography......'Child Star' by Shirley Temple-Black. One of my favorite books. She literally saved Hollywood & the industry during the great depression. And she WAS just that innocent little girl in REAL life too. She tells so many stories about what it was like from her perspective.....about that Golden Age. Including Bill Bojangles.
Fred Astaire's dancing on the ceiling scene was from _Royal Wedding_ and it made use of a camera which was bolted to the floor, but *the entire room* was built in a rig which allowed it to rotate. So, from the perspective of the camera, Fred went from dancing on the floor to dancing on the wall, then the ceiling, then the other wall, and then back to where he started. To sell the illusion, all the fixtures were designed to stay in place - though there was a chair which had been set up to allow him to move it before he started dancing (to really sell the illusion that everything was "normal" about the room).
It's a very clever gag, and yes, other artists have used it or something similar over the years since then.
When I first saw this, I must have watched it a dozen times in a row. Massive editing skills. With each watch, I picked out more and more actors and just loved every second of it. I still enjoy it just like I did watching it the first time.

I think Fred Astaire is one of the best dancers I’ve ever seen
He always seems weightless. Even though the moves are physically challenging, he is deftly effortless; like floating on air. So fun to watch him perform.
My favorite of the men. Gene Kelly was close though. Fred had more songs he sung that I really liked. I also loved the Rogers & Astaire films. I think Fred's first role, or kinda major role was "Dancing Lady" with Gable and a dancing Crawford. Joan Crawford was a dancer before an actress.

I mentioned Astaire's "hat rack dancing" & "ceiling dancing," but Gene danced with a broom - or rake -, I believe, in "Summer Stock," and when he danced with Tom and Jerry (as mentioned by someone above, not taking credit...not trying to draw ire). The Pirate was a cheesy Judy/Gene/Vincent Minelli film but I really enjoy it. There’s a lot of my favorite Rita Hayworth. Her and Fred worked together a lot. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, the amazing Nicholas Brothers. My MamMaw gave me such a love of the 40s. They were poor but could sew! Four sisters that would sketch the dresses and make copies another sister learned all the hairstyles. I have a photo of my grandparents leaving Antione’s in NOLA dressed to the nines. There last night out before he left for WWII.

That was the great Fred Astaire dancing up the wall onto the ceiling and back down. Yes he was first. That was from the movie Royal Wedding about 1951.
Yup, it was a marvel in its day. There was no CGI or optical illusions and a lot of people couldn't figure out how they did it.
They built the set on a rotation device. Once you know this you can see how all the dance moves accompany the rotation.

@@LilFisch1174 Absolutely. I'm sure they had to custom build a device for this, they couldn't just mount a set onto an existing one. When you think about the lengths they had to go to to make everything look completely natural, it's amazing. They nailed down the furniture, the pictures on the walls had to be affixed, the same with the chandelier and the lamps (and the wires that plugged into the walls) the drapes couldn't move, nor could the hat stand and the hat on it, etc. It was an engineering and filming wonder, it really looked like he was dancing on the walls and ceiling. The first time I saw this as a kid I was in awe.

Fred Astaire originated the dancing on the walls and roof, seemingly upside down. Astaire (with his partner Ginger Rogers) was the premium, dancer, again with Giner who did the same moves, but in heels, in 1930-1945 cinema. Gene Kelly (who danced with Jerry the mouse) was also a premium dancer from 1938 to 1966 (Xanadu anyone?) But in the days of the great movie musicals, everyone had to know how to dance--Frank Sinatra, Joan Crawford, etc. I love the Nicolas Brothers (3 brothers who jumped from heaven and did a split). Anne Miller was a classic tap dancer (yellow and black ensemble), and Cyd Charise was the ultimate in glamour and sexiness. Really, watch "Singing in the Rain," (Debbie Reynolds early picture), and "That's Entertainment," narrated by Gene Kelly and showing all the best of movie musical dance. And yes, whoever edited this video to Uptown Funk is a genius. Bravo!

@@why1itsme I can remember that when I was a child/teenager (in the UK) they'd show old films on a Saturday afternoon on BBC2, quite often they were musicals and not only the blockbuster ones but some of the less well-known ones. It's a real shame that they stopped doing it as it was also how I developed a love of old B&W movies too.

A hidden gem in here -- the lady in pink with the whip at 4:48 is arguably the biggest star on this video. It's Lucille Ball, the most famous comedienne of the 20th century. The scene is from 1945's "Ziegfield Follies", & she's a mid-tier actress at that point. Six years later she starred in "I Love Lucy" & her career exploded.

I sometimes forget how balletic Fred Astair's dancing was. It's been a while since I binged his movies.
While the Nicholas brothers were the most athletic, and Gene Kelley was smoother than silk, Fred was so in touch with his surroundings that inanimate objects looked and felt like intimate, articulate, and willing dance partners. But don't forget, all of those guys owed a huge debt to the inventiveness and self-awareness of Mr. Bojangles.
All the greats, Rita Hayward, Julie Garland, Ginger Rogers, Debbie Reynold, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Donald O’Connor, Danny Kaye, The Nicholas Brothers & so many others.
