      I think he should at least have a card to pass them at the end so they can see the image though if they want... instead of just leaving.

    his thoughts on street photographers profiting off of marginalized communities is one of the greatest opinions I've heard when it comes to this style of work. This is one of the realest and most authentic Walkie Talkie's to-date IMO. I also like his non-intrusive style and his huge emphasis on consent because while the abrasive and confrontational style works amazingly, this is the kind of work that I would rather see because it comes from a place of comfort and even a level of trust to an extent.

      Marginalized communities have bigger problems than people snapping pictures of them.

    • @JohnDoukasPhotography
      @JohnDoukasPhotography Před 9 měsíci +5

      I agree with him if people (photographers) are just coming in to exploit a community. But it also felt somewhat assuming that all outsiders are just trying to make a buck off of other people. Some people just like to explore different neighborhoods and cultures for the sake of exploring different neighborhoods and cultures.

    • @BrianT383
      @BrianT383 Před 9 měsíci +11

      It's really not. A photographer is just an observer. Making money from ones job is a given. Without the photographer other people wouldn't be exposed to that part of the world and see it's beauty or it's problems. Do you feel the same about a war photographer? They mostly take photos of peoples suffering, death and destruction.... but without them we couldnt even imagine the pain other people are going through. Also.... documenting history should never be discouraged in anyway and the photographer should be justly compensated for it.

    Im only 2:25 in and i was already moved to make a comment, Daniel's approach is such a vibe, Pour into the community, have an interaction, give a compliment, give and receive equally but, don't be pressed if you don't get back. Gee wiz, this is why i love the series and the messages given in these.

  • @BryanBirks
    @BryanBirks Před rokem +98

    Love his thoughts about ethics in regards to making work in marginalized communities. I completely agree with consent as well.
    The interaction around 6:15 with the woman is how I handle making work with strangers. I understand “normal” street photography but it’s never sat right with me to just go out and start photographing people without consent, regardless of if they’re in a public space or not.
    Never stop making these. They make me THINK instead of making me want to buy the next piece of gear. 🖤

    • @ams914
      @ams914 Před 10 měsíci +1

      But how do you get CANDID photos? Those are my personal favorite, and the only way to get them is when someone doesn't know they're being photographed.

    • @victorriverieulx2297
      @victorriverieulx2297 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@ams914 candid photography also hits different for me. something about capturing the unfiltered emotions of the moment. but in the country I'm in photographing people without their consent is illegal so I have to ask for consent and it's never quite the result I'm looking for. In the US it's perfectly legal so just get out there and do it I guess...

    i truly love pictures that are snapped without asking permission, it’s more real life on the go( like everyone is busy and doing their own thing without the feeling that someone’s watching so they have to pose) it’s free flowing. but this style of asking permission, brings out their personality almost like family 👏🏽 no matter what good work 😁💪🏾

    I just had a great convo with Daniel a little over a week ago, and that was our first time meeting. He saw me photographing a candid moment in Williamsburg and he stopped to chat with me and we had a great chat about consent vs. candid, particularly when it comes to street photography. Personally, I don't think there is a right or wrong way of doing photography (as long as the intentions are good) but the conversations are important.

    • @danielemuna

I feel our conversation was the start of my own learning, to explore and understand the nuance in being apart of these spaces and documenting with layers between self and the "subject" intact. Really fascinating to hear someone talk about working within communities in a way that gives back to them, and touch on how being a part of a community affords you that access. It's especially interesting as someone living in a foreign country, every time I speak I'm clearly an outsider, so I often think about how that affects my photos and how people perceive me.
