- The remote Pankisi Gorge in northeastern Georgia, home to a Muslim minority, was once the site of a military crackdown against Chechen fighters. More recently, the region has seen young men leaving to fight in Syria and Iraq. But many residents are trying to shake the association with militancy.

Here's the deal. Qists are Chechens who migrated to Georgia centuries ago and have interbred with Georgians. Their last names aren't Georgian, only the endings are, and the ending you described as Chechen is actually Russian and Azeri last names end with the Russian ending, letter v as well. The roots the last names of both Chechens and Qists are native, but the endings aren't, and haven't been for centuries, some have speculated it's because there aren't any proper last name endings in the Chechen/Qist language, but it's extremely wrong to say they were forced to change their last names. Qists have been living here as one of us for centuries. It's like green and red apples. They're both the same thing, just the color's different. And no, there's practically no genetic difference between Georgians and Qists, actually they and the Chechens are the only other peoples to have the phenotype G as the prominent one.
