there are many places in The Netherlands where trails are in off-the-leash-areas, it's pretty normal to run into dogs when trail riding. Sadly many dogs are still untrained and owners aren't always doing something to keep their dog and you and your horse safe.

I watched Matt Harnake 's video with His Emporio and the Frisian stallion out on a trail ride and it really made my day. As you mentioned he took every precaution to make sure the stallions could be handled safely if trouble arose. But you can see that Matt dropped the curb bit rein and just rode on the buckle at times with the bridoon at one point. But he was always ready to collect the reins up if he felt it was needed. Ill behaved dogs and their ignorant owners who refuse to train their animals just piss me off, (I use a service dog due to nerve damage to help me walk)both my dogs, my pet dog and especially my service dog are exceptionally well trained. I can't have some off leash aggressive dog endangering my service dog and her ability to work. Basic obedience courses should be mandatory. I love Matt and Jesse's channels.

    • @introvertedequinesamsara6593
      @introvertedequinesamsara6593 Před 2 lety +21

You can't take any basic obedience classes with an aggressive dog unless you have lots of money to spend. Basic obedience doesn't do anything for an aggressive dog, when they're in a high reactive state they block everything out and have tunnel vision.
I have an dog aggressive dog, I definitely would never have him off leash but saying dog aggression can be fixed with a few obedience classes is ignorant. Dealing and working with an aggressive dog takes years if not for the rest of the dogs life based on the dogs genetics, trauma and the money you have to spend in good training classes.
So many factors come into play and it's not always "they refuse to train them", such factors being them adopting a dog or getting a dog that's already an adult and had little training prior. Them getting a breed/dog that's prone to animal aggression or have a strong prey drive or even the dog having trauma. The majority of owners are doing the best they can with the resources they have.
*It is such a privilege to have a dog that has no behavioral issues, to not have to worry about if someday your dog is going to have to be put down because you weren't good enough, weren't aware enough or weren't there when it happened. The stress that comes with loving such a dog that has issues isn't anything like having an average pet. It's something I'd never take forgranted ever again.*

I never said that aggression could be cured with basic obedience, by all means please go reread. Basic obedience is a platform on which to build.
I have worked with dogs throughout my life, my service dog is owner trained.
Yes some owners refuse to train their dogs, I've heard practically every excuse to excuse their behavior regarding why they lack training or their refusal to train.

In the Netherlands (where Matt lives) it is way more common to keep your dogs off leash. Usually its allowed if you can control your dog, something that most dog owners ignore. I cant even tell the amount of times a dog has run up to me and my horse and started barking or growling, even in area's where dogs are supposed to be on a leash. Luckily nothing really bad has ever happend but wenever i am hacking out i am always on edge looking out if there arent any dogs near us. Once a dog jumped out of the bushes while me and my horse were trotting and started growling at my horse and trying to bite in her legs. Luckily my horse stayed calm but i was shaking. The owner just grabbed her dog and left, as if nothing had happend. Really frustrating

Oh my god 🤣🤣 I just hate irresponsible dog owners! I habe dogs myself and as soon as I see someone approaching me I always put my dogs on the leash... it's just the nice and also safe way to do.
I was riding out once when a small dog thought he had to come at us and bark and he stood between my mares hind legs, just barking (thank god) and the owner calling the dog (as if he would listen🤣) and my mare kept her cool and didn't even kick at it even though she hates the stable's cats lurking around her legs. Sometimes your horses can surprise you and are cooler than you think😊

Omg dogs on the trail can be so frustrating. When we had owned my horse for about 3 months (this was a WHILE back), my mum and I were taking my horse on a trail ride and two greyhounds sprinted up to my horse and jumped on her. She didn’t spook, and no one was injured, but it was so stressful. The owners didn’t even try to recall, and half heartedly apologised saying they were normally good with horses.

Tip: If going out on any trail or just out with your horse where dogs have ANY chance of being, bring a can of wasp spray. It goes farther than pepper spray, but isnt quite as nasty as bear spray: so you can usually send an attacking dog running from the saddle - then, just get your horse away ASAP.
I know it's not the nicest thing in the world to do to a dog, but its probably better than getting kicked, and, if you do it soon enough you can usually preempt the entire attack (but don't jump the gun completely. obviously; only spray if they are clearly getting aggressive and are not on a lead and/or their owner is nowhere to be seen and/or cannot control them). And seriously if an owner of that kinda dog gets bitchy fuck them - they are irresponsible and have no control of their animal.

I was out with my thoroughbred this summer (second time he was in the forest alone btw) and this dog just runs at us. My horse was obviously panicked and took off running. The dog wasn't aggressive so I just got off and put myself between it and my horse but THE OWNER DIDN'T EVEN FOLLOW THE DOG!! he just stood there calling it's name!!! Eventually the dog ran back but he didn't come back to check on me! I ran after him with a terrified 160cm horse and scream at him to come over so we could talk. Gave him an earfull about how badly it could've ended but the only thing he said was "He's only 4 months and I'm training him to be loose" EIABNGVAJKE LIKE TRAIN HIM WHERE THERE ISN'T A FUCKING ROAD BUILT SPECIFICALLY FOR HORSES TO BE ON HE OBVIOUSLY WASN'T READY FOR THIS

On the dog side. I completely agree. If you can't control your dogs keep them on a leash. My dog is trained to walk beside me off leash but if I see something that she would possibly go after I put her back on the leash asap. Vinny walks directly beside me and is not allowed to run around freely. I use this as a focus technique for our training. All distractions are put under testing before being off leash around the certain problems. I am in training to become a dog groomer and customers tell me that they let their dog out off leash all the time and they won't run off. But then go straight to the road. Luckily I haven't experienced any dogs getting run over by cars or buses but it worries me when people put their dogs in danger because they don't train them and assume they will listen.

I hope that competitions will be more accepting of bitless bridles. Honestly if they do I'd definitely consider going through the process of retraining my horse to respond to bitless because I know she can do it. But anyway, yes bitted bridle doesn't equal bad person, one just has to have the knowledge or tutelage to ride in a bit properly without causing pain.

I would recommend staying at that barn as long as they treat their horses well otherwise, since it is likely going to be hard to find a new place that is any better, you could always look around and see if you can find a better place though. Just don't whip the horse when they tell you to and maybe talking to them about how you feel about it. Sometimes I will very lightly tap them behind my leg, but not hard enough to cause any pain. When you get more advanced and better at riding, it will be a lot easier to get along with the horse so you really don't need to whip them, and I agree, I really hate when people tell me to do that too.
Hope this helped, happy riding! :)

I have a 17yo cow horse named Whiskey. He was trained in a hackamore to be a reining/cutting/cow horse. When he was 6 his owner died and he was sold to an elderly couple who basically fed him and spoiled him rotten. He was pretty much a lawn ornament for almost 7 years. Then my uncle bought him when I was 11 and gave him to me at the beginning of 2020. He has basically zero ground manners. And is hot-headed and pretty high-strung. It is not his fault. He was bred and trained for work but spent half his life getting overweight in a small pasture never being ridden. We've had him for almost 4 years. I'm not able to ride and work with him as much as I'd like to because we have to keep him at my papa's ranch due to limited space at my house. But lately (since I've gotten my driving permit) I've been able to ride him more. I'm hoping to get him back in shape and to eventually get him back into some sort of bitless bridle or hackamore. I just feel it is too dangerous to try that at this moment because he is such a strong-headed horse (basically he is so wound up and jittery while being ridden. He acts like crazy a stallion sometimes). I have a bosal and a mechanical hackamore. The bosal doesn't fit him tho, I tried last time I rode him, but his head is so big it won't even fit over his ears XD I tried using a bigger headstall but then the bosal part sat too low on his nose and I don't like it when that happens cuz I know it's dangerous and can hurt the horse. I fitted the mechanical hackamore to him but I do not feel safe enough to try riding him with it yet. Sometime next week my Dad said we can take him up the the arena/round pen at our church and I can work on his ground manners. He's just been neglected on his training for so long that he's forgotten most of it. So I've been trying to work with him to jog his memories XD Mainly I just ride him around my papa's ranch and through the woods near Papa's house. But every once in a while my church does a playday and I'll ride him in those. He does really well. I never run him tho cuz he's overweight and I don't want to hurt him, so we stick to a trot or lope :) I do not use a 'big' bit on him. It's an Ergom Lozenge cupreon snaffle with Egg-butt, not the one with loose rings, although that's the one I wanted to use on him but mom took it to use on her horse. I like to say I ride with soft hands but even soft hands can cause unintentional bit pain at times. I'm most defiantly softer compared to literally any other horse rider I know. I don't use a whip or spur on any of my horses (I have 2, Whiskey and my Arab X QH Mare Smokey, I ride her bitless). Don't use whip or spur when riding my mom's horse either. But I do use those ball spurs when riding my dad's horse cuz without spurs you have to kick him a lot harder than I feel comfortable kicking, so I use them, that way I hardly have to tap. Although I'd prefer not to use them at all. Which is why I've been teaching our horses vocal cues so that (especially my dad's horse) when you kick them with your feet you can give them the vocal cue at the same time and eventually you will barely have to kick. That's how my horse is, I slight tap will get her going, and if I squeeze instead of tap that tells her to increase speed.

It used to irk me that he sent his horses to trainers for weeks and even months, being a believer that the training those horses are receiving will be no good to you, if you aren't being trained with them.(Different training styles from the owner for example slight differences in technique) Matt admitted himself he didn't have much time to train them. Then a video or two later, he said he also had training. After watching the trail you featured, you could really see the difference in Matts style of riding and, although, still tentative at times, his confidence has grown ten fold.

I ride a big horse and her dogs are small. They could get stepped on. Q has also been spooking a lot recently for the dumbest reasons. I almost came off today because someone was putting water in a bucket. I feel like if one of her dogs starts barking at Q then he's gonna spook. It's a long way down for me to fall and I could get seriously injured. One of her dogs likes to chase the horses and bark. It's never bothered Q before but now I feel like he might spook and take off with me. The good thing is he's easy to calm down and I have good balance on him as I've gotten used to him spooking.

@@adrianaroyzis5336 I probably will if he gets spooky. He's kind of stopping spooking so I wonder if he's just been off lately.

I swear🤣. I literally drink out of the hose all the time and my barn has a fucking fridge with water bottles in it but the hose is right there 😂

I love how you reacted to This Esme! I wanted to ask you to react to her a few days ago but never did. And I love your opinion on her. I can see you both becoming friends because of your love for animals :3

You are a good influence on the community for sure! I ended up in a rabbit hole oh “hate video” about you and just thought almost all of them are so so stupid🤦‍♀️

From what I've heard Esme say, it's actually her dad that films for her. I don't know what he does for a living, but his filming skills are incredible!

I'm just binging Raleigh's Raleigh Reacts videos and she's awesome. Love her so much that's why I've been commenting cause not only do I like sharing my opinion, but I just comment to support the channel no matter how old the video is. And Matt Harnacke is incredible. I'm subscribed to him, I love his videos and how good of a rider he is. Especially when using a double bit. He does a good job.

Esme said in,one of her videos since COVID in the uk they have a thing called tack show and go, where you just tack up show then leave and results get sent to you so I think that’s helps
