Airboat Hunting The Great Salt Lake | Duck Lore

- čas přidán 18. 07. 2022
- Every year, millions of waterfowl and shorebirds head to The Great Salt Lake to winter and feed on brine shrimp. But, the vast shallow expanses of this lake make access to the birds a challenge. In this episode, Sean Weaver joins his friend Glade Harris, a mechanical guru who more than knows his way around both airboats and ducks. With a brutal cold front colliding with the West, this hunt is far from normal as ice build up takes out decoys, shovelers, and teal alike.

Let’s go season two!!!!! Getting me all hyped up for this year
so true
Same here
I used to hunt the willard bay area on the great salt lake. That is one magical waterfowl area. Longest it took me to shoot a limit was 2hrs, shortest was 15min. Took longer to set the decoys. Best day was 1 decoy and a limit of ducks in 15min!!!
There's that infamous spatchcocked duck you mentioned in the podcast! Great start to Season 2, look forward to seeing where you go next, Sean!
He had a sitka coat on when he first got out of the truck. Then all of a sudden brand new first lite jacket 😄
Good ol Great Salt Lake, such an amazing and diverse area to hunt. Being from Utah I often find myself neglecting to really appreciate how amazing it is. If y’all get a chance to hunt it, take it cause it won’t disappoint.
Damn. Being from Florida and around airboats all the time, I would love to see MeatEater do some Florida stuff with airboats. Run hogs, frog gig.. swamp things.
Same
New show title: Swamp Things
There is an episode where Cal shoots a hog from an airboat, I believe it was filmed in Louisiana not Florida though.
Funny thing is airboats were invented out here in Utah for the purpose of getting out in the shallow water of the GSL then spread to places like the south
Reminds me hunting with my Dad along Lake Champlain and the medowee river in VT for ducks and deer, squirrels.
Miss you Dad
i love it
One of my favorite series so glad it’s back
me to
One of my favourite series! I hope duck camp dinners is back for season 2 also 🦆
Agreed! 🦆🍽
The mud reminds me of hunting on the Salton Sea in Southern California
I grew up hunting the Great Salt Lake marshes back in the '70's. It was amazing then too.
MEATEATER coming in clutch! Go ahead and sign off on season 3 because the Waterfowlers ain’t going anywhere. 🦆
Glade did us good here in Utah. Great job man!
That banded gadwall drake is gorgeous. Thanks for your video!
Fine shooting fellas!
This is fun...but is chef Kevin going to be back with duck camp? That was my jam.
Fun to see you guys hunting in my back yard, and playing in our airboat around the salt lake shores is always a good time. Great video fells
This is really cool, Sean! Your mom and dad were at Corbin's wedding and told me what you were doing. Your cinematography and narrative are top notch professional.
Great Series!! Like all Meateater production, including Pardon My Plate, y’all knocked out of the park.
So hype for First Lite duck gear and duck lore!
I just fricken love ducks, thanks for another great video!

Hi from Syracuse NY everyone thank you for sharing your adventures in hunting
I've been waiting for this episode. We are so blessed here most seasons
Another great show. Our duck season in Victoria has finished but Ducklore will give me my waterfowl fix until next March. Thanks from Australia.
I remember my first time flying into SLC from Bozeman, coming over the lake birds as far as the eye could see. Couldn't tell what they were for sure but they had to be ducks of some sort. Things were already frozen hard at home and it was open water all around.
Hunted the GSL sloughs for 18 years. Mud is biblical. So much work. But memories were made.
"end up on a wild duck chase"! I see what you did there. ;)
Season two. Awesome.
Awesome, definitely some great hunting. Thank you for sharing
What a resource with a great guide-- what a video 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆
Thank you for more waterfowl content! 🙌
WOW! That's some tough hunting!
My favorite meateater show!!
So cool omg love your guys”s show
Love this show
Great Hunt 🙌.
Thanks for the cook up!
JO JO IN VT 😆💕
If you don't duck hunt, this series will make you want to duckhunt
Sean always delivers great hunts, adventures, and especially some real deal education.
Awesome series
Muy excelentes cazerias amigos
That was cool. Thanks
That’s madness! That they freeze on the lakes!!
IT'S BACK!
Soothing cold - helps here in record summer heat in Europe
surprised no one in the comments is talking about how much of a dead eye Sean is. No ammo is wasted.
Thanx
Good to see my home hunting grounds make the show. Love the show, thanks.
To all the haters filled with negative comments posting on here. Try posting somewhere else like political communities or other drama filed social issues.
God knows we needed thus
Cool hunt! Let me know if you make a trip to Alaska !
I really like this series. That's a great retriever dog too.
She really is the best!
@@backwaterperformance2005 Good, steady dog that doesn't run in. Peter Moxon would be impressed.
Duck hunting on an air boat, you just can’t get mote hillbilly then that. Bring it! Yeeehaaaa!!
We don't have hillbillies in Utah.
yeahh buddy. well done.
I can see the lake from my house. I never realized how great the salt lake is.
If only dogs could curse! :-D That made me laugh out loud. Anyone else catch the shift from Sitka Timber to First Lite Typha?
Gadwald are 1 of the most common ducks we kill down here in southeast texas
I hunt the salt lake every year such a fun place to get some birds
So,the end of the day those ducks coust you a cupple hundred bucks each ! Manley per suite ! ,leads good for you
Me to!!
Very nice
The climate is truely changing. Extreme cold snaps in winter and heat waves in summer. I hope the birds and other wildlife can cope with us.
That kind of cold is rough on a dog's joints and pads. It stiffens the pads and removes their flexibility which makes it painful for the dog. And their joints suffer from a lack of healthy blood-flow because of the cold temp. And in these high activity situations the cartilage is starved of oxygen, and slowly degrades overs years. I don't know why anyone would bring a dog out in that kind of temp.
I really like his narration just like steves I wish the chef did it more
It was like 90 when I took the dog for a walk at 1930 tonight. I would have killed for some of that sweet ice.
Love it. My only question is how far away did you park the boat from that spread?
We usually only park it a couple hundred yards away. The birds aren't pressured out there like they are in the inshore marshes and wma's. It's a different experience than anything else.
The great st lake is 1/3 the size it used to be. Although it is a good hunting area. It is going to disappear just like every other body of water in Utah.
Is that last pond you were on private?
Lol - I dunno if I would be hunting ducks if they are obviously struggling - like fishing during a fish kill.
Gadwall was all we got most of the time
Woop
Are not teal and shovler's like bass and bluegill's? Pretty sure they are, in common terms, cousins.
I love this show but one- all those teal.. why shoot the smiley? Also- why send your dog into water in those conditions? I’m from LA so we rarely if ever see conditions like that.
Shout out
the GSL is at record lows this year.
Let’s get the info from the band !
Banded 8/21 about 30 miles from where it was killed
👊
Teal and shovler .... kissin cousins lol
Baiting is what has changed waterfowl hunting -the flyways have been altered to the point that are not recognizable compared to 20 years ago-its become commercialized to the point that a normal person can’t duck hunt -there are practically no migration in the central flyway in Louisiana-only some teals -local wood ducks -the results is that duck hunting in Louisiana has collapsed
im new to bird hunting what does the duck band mean?
Bands are used primarily to estimate hunting mortality. When you kill a banded bird, you can report it to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and receive info about where and when it was banded. For an overly simple example, if 10,000 gadwalls are banded and 1000 bands are reported, the estimated hunting mortality would be 10%. Information about movements and migration can also be derived from bands, but mortality estimates are the primary purpose.
Those ducks are not dead from the cold weather. They are dead from botulism
Where is Steve?
NEVER SEE YOU GUYS PICKIN UP YOUR SHELLS?! DO YOU REALLY LEAVE THEM IN THE ENVIRONMENT?
No one else disappointed they did not reveal where the duck was banded?
Most likely right here in Utah we have a pretty extensive banding program
Shot one 2 years ago banded in Idaho killed in ut and seen another on a CZcams video and it was banded in hooper UT and shot in Sonora Mexico
Shovelers? On purpose?
Any way the crew in the video or at least in the comments tell what guns and ammo are used? That against youtube rules or a sponsor thing? Can't give a shout out without getting paid for it? Some people are genuinely interested in that kind of stuff.
Wheres rinella?
He got fired from Meateater TV, he’s allowed to continue with the podcast and continue with his blogs but he’s no longer allowed in videos. The reason being his brother(I cannot remember which one) said that we need to stop inviting so many people to hunt because it’s making everything too difficult to draw, Meateater asked Steve to deny the things his brother said, Steve refused and was promptly fired
@@oakleylarsen3480 How can someone get fired from their own company?
@@jackiekinner3826 He didn't. That comment is a lie from the pits of hell.
He is just busy filming the main show, writing books, as well as being a husband and father. The man is allowed to take a little time off. A little respect goes a long way.
@@Eric-dr5bj nah
What's up with the band, do you get something special from it?
Awesome vid man ! Would love if you could check out some of my no scope action. 😃 Keep up the hunts !
🇪🇨🇪🇨🇪🇨👍🤝
Geez talk about over volume on the background music
Don't eat those shovlers. Full of mercury.
Utah is like Southern Alberta. Except there are no fundie mormons in AB. 😜
People think Utah is great duckhunting but its really not. These guys have a $30k+ airboat and edded on a private pond because they still could not find quality hunting. Utah is grossly missmanaging their ducks and it gets worse and worse every year. I hate to be the person who complains but the decrease in quality I have seen makes me sick and the stories i heard from my grandfauthers make me sad for my own son.
get out and scout. I have shot a limit almost every day I've hunted this year in walk in hunting areas. Theres ducks out there. Lots of em
There's something I dont like about the idea of "limiting". Pursuing an arbitrary number purely for bragging rights or to pad your ego just doesnt sit right with me. Something about respecting the kill
Ok Karen.
Yeah I really expected more out of season 2. The first season was pretty basic: go to place, yell "KILLKILLKILL"... show dead ducks... This really doesn't contribute anything at all. Shows like this drove me away from "outdoor" programming when I was a kid because they were boring and offered nothing.
Dear MeatEater, if it does not have Steve then it is NOT MeatEater. Respectfully I request you to put these Steve lacking videos on another Channel!
Meateater is a company. A company is whatever it wants to be. Be appreciative.
This is one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen it’s called meat eater not Steve rinella show if you don’t like it don’t watch it
Damn. I think this is the most entitled, selfish, ridiculous, and stupid thing I have ever heard. 😂😂😂 Maybe try growing up a little instead.
