That was a fine Scottish team, but to say they were contenders for the World Cup is ridiculous. The Germans and Dutch were a class apart from everyone else, and the Poles showed that their qualification over England was no fluke.

You could make the same case for almost every other World Cup and European Championship - including 1966. After 1970 Ramsey could have handed over to say, Jock Stein.
