Scotland had some great players in 74 probably better than 78 half of the Leeds team who were champions of England, Dalglish etc should have beat Brazil in the group although I think the Dutch would have beat them

uncanny those 2 goals identical strikes.

Beating the Netherlands in 1978 is one of the greatest moments in Scottish Football History. 1978 could have been even better had we shown more firepower against Iran.

Look, I remember this World Cup and the total disappoint it brought us.
We were all led to believe we had a team of World Beaters; but really they flattered to deceive. Never produced the goods when it mattered. The boys in today’s National team might not be Big names like like the ‘74‘ Prima-Donna’s; but I much prefer the efforts they have made so to bring some respect back to Scottish Football.

That was a fine Scottish team, but to say they were contenders for the World Cup is ridiculous. The Germans and Dutch were a class apart from everyone else, and the Poles showed that their qualification over England was no fluke.

The "Kaiser" Franz Beckenbauer was disappointed and shocked that Scotland and not England would be Britain's sole representative in the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany.
Beckenbauer,of course, had expected England to qualify for the Munich finals but then Scotland under Willie Ormond had beaten Czechoslovakia 2-1 at Hampden Park to qualify.
Beckenbauer had every reason to peeve as Scotland had held West Germany 1-1 in a friendly at Hampden Park just before the Munich finals." We really struggled at Hampden with the Scots aiming their guns at us.We were fortunate to escape with a 1-1 draw."
The Scots came guns ablaze ooze with confidence for the 1974 World Cup finals after having outplayed England 2-0 to win the Home Championship at Hampden Park.
"The Scots,of course, were very confident of making it to the final round. But what exaspertated me that many of the Scottish players spotted very long hair with a grin on the face.Joe Jordan,Willie Morgan,Willie Donarchie,Denis Law,Billy Bremner,Sandy Jardine,David Harvey and others."

We should have been united then. In 1970 we could have gone to Mexico with Banks, Moore, Charlton, Best and Law. In 1982 we could have put Brooking, Francis, Robson, Keegan and so on with Dalglish, Souness, Hansen and Rush. The keepers would have been Jennings and Shilton.
You could make the same case for almost every other World Cup and European Championship - including 1966.
After 1970 Ramsey could have handed over to say, Jock Stein.
