    I love Google Docs for the reasons you talked about, and especially because everything is completely backed up all the time. If you shut your laptop and ten minutes later it's destroyed in an accident, all of your files are safe. Get another laptop, sign in, and you're back in business.
    Nowadays I use Scrivener, and your viewers should know that even though it sells at $49 now, there are OFTEN coupons available that bring it down to $20! I purchased mine that way a few years ago and I believe it was in relation to some NaNoWriMo advertising. Web searches can find these coupons at various times, so if you can wait patiently (using your current software) until a sale hits, you can score big.
    And you will never regret it. I'm on the Windows side (though I use an iPhone too), so I've used Docs, yWriter (mini-Scrivener for free), LibreOffice, OneNote, and finally, Scrivener. It's the best writing software I've ever used.
    One very interesting...and cool...thing about Scrivener is that you can download it for free and you have a 30 day trial. That's not 30 consecutive days and you're done. Literature & Latte allows you to use Scrivener for a day here, a day there, months apart if need be, for a TOTAL of 30 days before you have to pay. So you're not forced to review everything in a one month period.

  • @MsPennyDrop
    @MsPennyDrop Před 5 lety +7

    I am now on my 7th book and experience has led me to favour simplicity. Consequently, I don't format when I'm writing, except for chapter headings so that I can navigate through chapters when I want to. Apple Pages, for some bizarre reason known only to them, does not have a navigator so I can't do this. I keep my text as clean as I can so I don''t add links or book marks. I always put the final book together in a DTP and it works a treat.
    I''m surprised you left off Open Office (Which I think is the closest to Microsoft Office) and also Libre Office which at the moment is my preferred app.
    Your videos are always interesting and informative, but I find the music very distracting.
    Stay blessed ;)

    • @AuthorLevelUp
      @AuthorLevelUp  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for the feedback on the music. After next week I’ll probably stop doing music.
      I left off OpenOffice and LibreOffice because they’re not really good solutions in my opinion. I know too many people who struggle with formatting and have so many issues with them that it’s hard for me to recommend them.

    • @MsPennyDrop
      @MsPennyDrop Před 5 lety +3

      I can appreciate that. As someone who has used Microsoft Word since the beginning of time ;) I don't find them difficult. Moving over to a Mac as a second computer has been quite an 'experience'!!!!!
      I really appreciate leaving off the music. What you say is interesting enough without it.
      Thank you.

  • @stregalilith

    Hi, Prof. Level Up. I really like this channel and I need a little guidance on Pages. I jumped in and started my book in Pages. I now have 137,00+ words in many, many chapters but now the editing is a problem since I have no outline or table of contents or chapters. Now I have to go back and insert new revisions but I can't find where I want them to go. Also, I need to order the chapters chronologically but, again, though the story hangs together I can't figure out how to organize the chapters. I tried the page number feature but failed at it. How can I save my book? Can I transfer the whole thing onto another app like Scrivener? Help, please. Also, good for you, going to law school. I did it and so can you!

    • @AuthorLevelUp
      @AuthorLevelUp  Před 2 lety

      Your best bet is to transfer it using Scrivener’s import and split feature. I don’t have any videos on that but you can Google it. Get it into Scrivener (or another app with a binder) and it will be much easier to work with.

      I bought Scrivener and loaded it onto my computer (Apple Mac) and now I'm hearing that transferring my book from Pages to Scrivener will be difficult unless I translate it to MicroSoft Word. What do you think? I'm scared to risk it.

  • @AlucardNoir
    @AlucardNoir Před 5 lety +5

    A decent Scrivener alternative is Manuskript, it's still in development but it's the closest you can get to Scrivener for free. There are a few more alternatives on Windows, like yWriter and FreeWriter, but for Mac, Manuskript is the best *free* Scrivener alternative. (and it's still not Scrivener)

    • @AuthorLevelUp
      @AuthorLevelUp  Před 5 lety +1

      Yep, Manuskript made my shortlist. It almost made the cut, but the fact that it’s in a loooong beta made it hard for me to recommend. But I was definitely impressed with what I saw.
