Its important to note here that the Democratic party of MY parents was a bunch of racists who wanted slavery. Some time around the 60's things changed, the newer Democrats embraced change and progress and moved past the old, racist ways of their parents...and the Republican party decided it would be in their interest to embrace the racism of the southern states in an attempt to gain support from voters who felt the Dems had abandoned them.
Effectively, the parties' positions switched and Democrats adopted a more progressive mindset while Republicans adopted the more conservative one.
