The song where Q-Tip mentions Bob Power’s name is “The Chase, Part II” from Midnight Marauders.
You are correct! I love Midnight Marauders to life!
@@BackToTheBoomBap Ditto! That album came out during my third year of college, and I loved it instantly. R.I.P. Phife.
That's exactly what I always think too when I hear Bob Power lol. Earlier I heard of Q-Tips production influence on Mobb Deep and hearing how their process w Tribe was and the story of Dilla making arrangements so quickly it is really mind blowing. The way the collective with D'Angelo & ?uestlove literally studying Dilla beats the same way they studied legends like Prince & Stevie Wonder. It makes me think The Love Movement was influenced in a big way by the Legend James Yancey J Dilla. What a musical history. Needs a film.
@@okrabanana7211 yeah a Dilla movie would be awesome! J Dilla was just ahead of his time. That's why when he started working with Tribe, a lot of fans didn't like it. The sound was different from their previous albums. But Dilla had something special since day one and he probably produced the lion's share of the beats on The Love Movement and BRL. But he felt like he wasn't getting the credit he deserved. That's what started to cause him to move differently and seek to pave his own way. And I believe that he eventually got to live that out to some degree before his untimely death.

I'm about 3/4 through this book, and I gotta say it's definitely worthy of its subject. Well written, meticulously researched, and has taken me places I didn't expect it to take me while tying it all together and bringing it right back to Dilla flawlessly. Good stuff.
Yeah I love it! I'm like on page 185. That's good for me because I'm so busy now I don't have a lotta time to read books like I want to.
gotta ask, does it have photos and stuff too?
@@allisterjones No photos. There are some basic rhythm charts, but other than that, it’s all text. Packed with great information. One of the most enjoyable music bios I’ve read in forever, and it’s so much more than just a bio.

dilla has got to be in every producer's top 10 at least
honored to share a b-day with James. been tied through his music at least a decade before i really knew about him... growin up, so many fav tracks by various artists but no idea they were his. a few years later, my father was killed, & then we lost Dilla just days later. rough time of year, but special, & somehow it's all still tied to his music, which always makes me feel a bit better. def gonna check this book out

Mad looking out for this, can't wait to get the book!!
This book is one of the best read I have had in a short while. Brilliantly written, insightful, resourceful, just a great piece of work.
Yep it really is. I'm more than half way done, but I really have learned the most from a technical standpoint on J Dilla's process from it than anything I've read.
This is great....I will never forget me and my bro picked up Black Milk and it was a long Convo about Dilla man. It was so dope to hear him speak high of him
Awesome! I went to the One Stop Shop in AZ in '09. Some friends I met there were talking about producers they wanted to meet. I mentioned Black Milk and within seconds he ended up walking into the building! We all bugged out cause that was a crazy coincidence.
Great job with this video! I really enjoyed this!! I will get the book also!

@@BackToTheBoomBap The book finally arrived to me in France. Tore through it. Great read. Loved the technical details on shifting rhythms. Very sad story, though, and Chapter 13 was a tough read, with all the infighting amongst his loved ones after his death. The Book was underwhelming to me, too much emphasis on his personal troubles and not enough highlights of the great songs he made. I enjoyed the stories about the Like Water sessions and the stories of him and Badu. But I really wanted more insight to Beats, Rhymes.
I love the audiobook because I can just FF the personal stories. I agree on that. As much as I love Dilla Time, i don't really want to hear about personal relationships like his gfs that are in too much detail.
@@okrabanana7211 facts, I couldn’t keep up with that aspect of the girls, how many was it and how many kids did he have by them? Then it mentioned he made some girls get abortions. Made him seem like a power trick for strippers.
Have to say the same after giving it a read but was thoroughly enjoying
He was talking about Running not Bullshit!!
No, he actually was talking about the song Bullshit. In the book it talks about it. Questlove said it was in 1994 when he first heard the song. And he talks about it in that Red Bull Music Academy interview. I think it came out in 2014. That was actually the first time I heard him tell the story, back then.
