A pure classic "Magnus" game. Beautiful maneuvering in the middle game, slow piece improvement, then grinding and grinding, forcing opponent to find difficult move after difficult move, and then, when the opponent finally misses, bring the guillotine down. Largely brilliant defense from Fabi as well.

Yeah, he's been doing so well whenever he loses. He always almost always doesn't let it bother him, and he comes back really strong. It's an important quality for the top players anyway.

Absolutely correct on the “makes a career on” comment. Nobody squeezes a queen and pawn endgame that should be drawn to victory like Magnus does.
whats funny is that magnus said he started just looking to play for a draw, but then he liked what he saw and well, the rest is history.
Yeah, he played insanely accurately. Even Fabiano played a really good game, but Magnus was up to 99% accuracy this game.

we just released a vid today on gandalf and the balrog and how they were conceived as twin beings different only in their choices… since gandalf is all about their fire… and a balrog is literally a fiery being (the biblical serphamin (fiery ones) surely played a role in tolkien's choice, here imo)

Magnus had 99% accuracy in this game, that tells you how big he wanted to win this game deep inside after the yesterday defeat against Pragg. I mean forget everything about what he said in the interview after the match about just trying to play solid in the event, I am adamant he will pull through another couple of decent classic win in the coming games and we will see vintage Magnus coming back soon
Yeah, 99% is insane. He played an amazing game, and came back with a vengeance after his loss to Pragg which angered him a lot. He'll be ready the rest of the tournament to try to keep this up. Staying the top at classical is important for his career longevity, he has mentioned it before, and he did again yesterday.

Apparently black can not make any progress, cant promote and white king is annoyingly safe in corner moving on squares h2, h1 and g1 .
I think 90% of GM-s would check here even if they cant calculate it all thru because on time trouble.To push black king in front of his passed pawn is always a good idea if you dont want your opponent to promote

If you're the white pieces and you want a draw then that means it's a sign that you dont like to be a world champion.

Its the same thing over and over again. Magnus is not really motivated to play, he loses a game and gets provoked by losing and decides to start winning and ends up winning the tournament. Especially on home turf he doesn't like the embarrasment of losing.
