Preparing for the chess world championship is more intense than any final exam that 99.999% will ever write. It’s so much work and so much time. And then you play for a month against one person. I understand Magnus’ decision tbh
Nahhh, playing those long and grueling matches for over a week is no fun. That title is out dated in 2023.
His Loss
the format is the problem. it's a complete snoozefest and it's mainly FIDEs loss as nobody will care who has the title as long as it's just a vanity contest for the second best players

Agree. James' channel is the best chess channel because he does not delve endlessly into alternative lines yet shows us some critical things that are needed to understand the traps these masters usually don't fall into (but we would).

Thank you for the videos! This channel is quickly becoming my favorite chess channel. Compared to my previous favorite, Gothamchess, these videos are way more polished and efficient. More info and laughs per minute by my subjective measure, and these videos don't suddenly skip a whole bunch of moves like Gotham often does when he goes over games.

Everything about the past 5 years for Magnus has just affirmed the goat status. Beyond the obvious classical championships, he’s just had these winning streaks and utter dominance in a world full of historically strong young competition.
However, had the arbiters not forfeited Daniel Dubov against Nepo, he would have finished tied with of Magnus.

I’ve been studying chess A LOT since the lockdown and I gotta say it’s either massively brave, massively stupid, or both to use the Sicilian against Magnus. He effortlessly knows every line in an E4, C4 game

Magnus has been doing wonders recently and here a fine attack but from the description i'd expected something devastating and decisive from it whereas Sarana, admittedly with very little time left, blundered at the end. Magnus too good for him of course, far above the rest, an incredible achievement to be so dominant

I'm just gonna keep saying it until players learn. Magnus PROTECTS HIS KING. It's why he wins. Look at this game at the 5 minute mark. Magnus has an ideal castled King and 2nd rank pawn defense. Meanwhile, Black has his king moved out towards the center of the board completely exposed doing god knows what. Again, why aren't we castling quickly against Magnus? Why aren't we focusing on King safety the way he is? Trust me, you aren't going to outplay him by getting cute and taking him off book, so just stick to fundamentals and protect your KING!

10 wins in a row (i.e. adoption) in such tournament isn't impossible for Carlsen. He has already pulled such feat before in accelerated/blitz chess. Sometimes, he seems just bored over the board and not motivated enough to play at 100% of his capability. No serious rivals I guess

If they were not forfeited I think the pairings would have been different

Magnus accepted a draw in the last game because that was all he needed to win the tournament. He would not have done that if there had been another player tied on score!
