    After being fired by AlphaTauri earlier this year, it seemed like it was all over for Nyck De Vries. However, with him recently signing a contract to race for Mahindra in Formula E from next year, what's on the horizon for him?

    I wish he stuck to Williams. I feel like at the side of Alex Albon and in Mercedes-powered machinery he would've done a lot better than at Alpha Tauri. Less pressure, more time to learn, a more or less familiar environment, no Helmut Marko... on paper it can only be beneficial. Nevertheless, I hope his next adventure is more successful, he deserves it.

      Me too! Plus, Williams is on a team on the way up while AlphaTauri is, clearly, on the way down. All Nyck needed was a bit of stability and a sure future, and I’m sure those good performances would come. After all, he was essentially driving without pressure in Monza 2022 and look how that turned out for him!

      Logan sergeant will be more profitable if he ends up being as good as any other borderline replacement driver like nick

      As a Williams fans I'm happy he didn't.
      At least Logan is a rookie, De Vries would have been
      1. Not an academy driver
      2. More expensive
      3. Just as bad

    I think Red bull were expecting Piastri level performance from him, with his experience and such. I don't think we'll see him back in F1 but hey FE and WEC have better racing

    I do like De Vries, but unfortunately because of his age he really did have to hit the ground running. he's late into F1 and not a young driver for a rookie.
    This afforded him less time as there's less of a long term driver to develop. Therefore AT needed someone to score more points as he was wasting a lot for the team. It was perhaps harsh to axe him on his rookie season, as red bull usually are, but I do get it.

  • @dustinabigan2776
    @dustinabigan2776 Před 7 měsíci +3

    I feel like the reason why the expectations for him were way higher (and I feel like this justifies the early firing somewhat) is that his years are numbered anyway because he's in his late 20s. It's either AT give him the deadline (which they did) or his age would put into question whether or not he's a stable option long-term considering a good number of even the more experienced drivers probably won't make it past 30 anyway because there's always someone coming after them. I mean for example Checo who is 5 years older than him is already facing retirement rumors, and that's for a driver that once won races. Those retirement calls would be much earlier if you don't win a race (and most drivers don't during their career). Some drivers today if weren't for circumstance would have also left F1 for good even before they reach 28 (Albon in 2020 and Ocon in 2018). So De Vries being given a shot at F1 is already an edge case that played against him.
    Plus, it didn't help that his short stint in F1 isn't exactly free of damages and errors, that doesn't really strengthen your case as an F1 driver. Honestly, I just don't see him going back to F1 because the driver conveyerbelt keeps rolling and there are many other rookies that can serve as better long term options.

    Nyck has always been a relatively successful driver from karting to lower formula and surprisingly other racing series, shame he couldn't make more out of his F1 oppertunity quick enough, but his FE performance is really impressive happy to see him back to racing

  • @notthefia9154
    @notthefia9154 Před 7 měsíci +2

    Regardless of his time in F1, De Vries is still one of the most successful and skilled racing drivers alive, he’s a multi discipline world champion and race winner at the end of the day and that doesn’t happen without an insane amount of talent, he was touted as the next karting prodigy, the best of his generation and next coming of Christ, if anyone hasn’t watched the 2018 F2 season I urge them to, it demonstrates how incredible of a driver De Vries can really be and if it wasn’t for Norris’s OP engine at the start of the season and prema not having the best of cars to start the season with, he most likely would’ve finished 2nd to Russell and ahead of Norris, Albon and even further ahead of other world class drivers like Aitken, Fuoco and Sette Camara, was his time in F1 a success, to a degree yes because he’ll still go down on the list of drivers who scored points and drivers who scored on debut, but in the grand scheme of things he had many cards stacked against him at Alpha Tauri and him being there in the first place was a result of Marko expecting too much after one singular result where all the circumstances played into his favour and expecting that to be a baseline performance at every race

    Excellent vid! I heard speculations that Nyck was only hired as a placeholder as Ricciardo had a clause in his deal with McLaren he couldn't drive for any other teams for 6 months after they broke contract, and the dates suspiciously lined up. Now that's pure seconhand speculations, but RedBull isn't afraid of doing ... things.
    Different cars/series suit different drivers and play to their strengths. The examples of unsuccessful F1 drivers doing great in other series are plentiful - and the other way around where quite successful F1 drivers haven't mastered other series.
    I just hope Nyck can forge a carreer for himself in a series where he can exell.

    • @JohnWarren

      Thank you! I wonder if (if it’s true) Nyck knew about the clause in Ricciardo’s contract? Either way, I’m sure there’s a future in motorsport for Nyck somewhere.

      @@JohnWarren If it's true I'd say probably not. Full disclosure historically doesn't seem to be RedBulls way of doing driver dealings. Also if I was them I'd want to lock Nyck in for the full year just in case Ricc proved in testing he was washed after all.

    It is possible to combine Formula E with WEC, as Buemi does, for instance, and I'm sure Nyck can build himself a great career in both. Considering how well he did in Williams in 2022, AlphaTauri probably just wasn't the right car for him. But at least it made people speak about Nyck, and so he got new opportunities. Hope he enjoys racing with his new team(s).

    • @JohnWarren
      @JohnWarren  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Possibly! And yes, I think you’re right that AT put Nyck on the radar, and even to be the worst Formula One driver puts him in the top 0.1% of everyone else. Time will tell how things work out for him!

    While I imagine a lot of people know him for his failed F1 career, I know him first and foremost as a Formula E driver. Going from Mercedes EQ to Mahindra is a huge downgrade, however he'll be both in his comfort zone, the series that he considers home, and in a low-pressure environment where he won't be fighting for any titles. He was also pretty good in WEC so I'd love to see him make a return, however WEC, Formula E and pursuing an MBA is a lot for one person to do.

    • @JohnWarren

      It is definitely a lot to focus on, and Formula E should definitely be his main focus (as it’s probably his main source of income)!
